RICHARDSON, Texas –– Mississippi College junior forward Michael Cooper and Hardin-Simmons University junior defender Chris O’Brien won player of the year awards to highlight the 2009 American Southwest Conference men’s soccer awards, the ASC office announced on Wednesday (Nov. 11) after a vote of the league’s 14 head coaches.
Cooper (Vicksburg, MS / Hinds CC) was named ASC Offensive Player of the Year after leading the conference with 43 points, 20 goals, six game-winning scores and five hat tricks. He also led the league with 87 shots taken and propelled the Choctaws to a berth in the ASC tournament.
O’Brien (Austin, TX / Westwood HS) was named ASC Defensive Player of the Year after spearheading a unit that allowed just 13 goals and posted eight shutouts. He also scored two goals and was named Most Valuable Player of the ASC tournament after guiding the Cowboys to their third conference title in the last five years.
Both Cooper and O’Brien were named to the ASC All-Conference First Team.
University of the Ozarks forward Scott Janders (Keller, TX / Central HS) and Hardin-Simmons defender Brennan Goodman (Rowlett, TX / RHS) earned top freshman awards. Janders was voted ASC Offensive Freshman of the Year after scoring nine goals – including four of the game-winning variety – while Goodman earned the title of ASC Defensive Freshman of the Year after helping the Cowboys rank second in the league in shutouts and adding three assists.
Concordia University Texas senior midfielder Brian Friend (Bannockburn, IL / Deerfield HS) was voted ASC Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year.
University of Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Brad Bankhead was chosen as ASC Coach of the Year after guiding the Cru to the ASC regular season title, an at-large bid into the NCAA playoffs and a national ranking. All feats were firsts in program history.
