Mississippi College senior quarterback Adam Shaffer

CLINTON, MS - Mississippi College senior quarterback Adam Shaffer has been named a finalist for the 2009 Gagliardi Trophy, given each year to the most outstanding Division III football player in the country. The award is sponsored by Jostens, Inc. and conducted by the J-Club of St. John's in Collegeville, Minn. This year's winner will be introduced Thursday, Dec. 17, in Salem, Virginia.

Shaffer, a former standout at Jackson Academy, set a new school record this year with 33 touchdown passes breaking his own record of 31 during the 2007 season. Shaffer has completed 220-362 passes for 2,920 yards with just eight interceptions. Shaffer was chosen last week as this year's American Southwest Conference Offensive Player of the Year.

Ten total finalists were named for the award. The other nine finalists are DePauw quarterback Spud Dick, Mount Union linebacker Judd Lutz, Susquehanna running back Dave Paveletz, Union linebacker John Peters, UW-Whitewater kicker Jeff Schebler, Monmouth quarterback Alex Tanney, Augustana tackle Blaine Westemeyer, Case Western Reserve quarterback Dan Whalen and Central running back David Zachary.
