MCMINNVILLE, Ore. – The University of Texas at Tyler baseball team was eliminated from the 2009 NCAA Division III Baseball West Regional on Saturday evening with a 10-4 loss to George Fox at Jim Wright Stadium in McMinnville.
The Bruins (35-10) came out of the gates swinging by scoring four runs off of four hits and two UT Tyler errors in the top of the first inning.
The Patriots scored one run in the bottom of the inning off of a sacrifice fly from senior Chad Daleiden (Cave Creek, Ariz.), but a two run second inning from George Fox established a lead the proved insurmountable for UT Tyler.
Daleiden added two more runs in the bottom of the third inning with a double down the left field line that scored juniors Austin Newell (Kennedale, Texas) and Nathan Skeen (White Oak, Texas). Daleiden accounted for three of UT Tyler’s four RBIs on the day.
Senior Joe Towns (Carrollton, Texas) rounded out the UT Tyler offense on the day with a solo homerun in the sixth inning.
George Fox’s Travis Schroeder entered the game in the third inning and all but shut down the Patriots’ offense. Schroeder allowed just one run off of three hits with seven strikeouts over 6.2 innings of work.
Despite the loss, UT Tyler’s 39-12 record on the season sets a new single-season wins mark for the American Southwest Conference and was just one of several accomplishments achieved during the 2009 season.
The Patriots won their third consecutive ASC East title during 2009, as well their first-ever ASC Championship.
