RICHARDSON, Texas –– Concordia University Texas senior forward Brad Walker and University of the Ozarks sophomore forward Blake Mitchem have been named division players of the year to headline the 2010 American Southwest Conference Men’s Basketball All-Conference and All-Division selections, the ASC office announced on Wednesday (March 3), following a vote of the league’s 15 head coaches.

The 6-6, 210-pound Walker (Brenham, TX / BHS) earned the title of ASC West Division Player of the Year after averaging 17.8 points, 6.8 rebounds, 1.9 blocks and 1.7 steals per game. He was named to D3hoops.com’s national Team of the Week a nation-high four times.

The 6-6, 190-pound Mitchem (Fort Smith, AR / Northside HS) was named ASC East Division Player of the Year after winning the league scoring and rebounding titles at 21 points and 10.6 boards per game, respectively. He also led the conference with 36.2 minutes played per game and 13 double doubles.

Walker and Mitchem, who were both selected to their respective All-Division first team, were also named to the prestigious five-player ASC All-Conference Team. They were joined by University of Texas at Dallas senior wing Scott Rodgers (The Woodlands, TX / TWHS), McMurry University junior forward Jeremie Hart (Dallas, TX / Washburn) and Mississippi College senior forward Donnie Haywood (Monroe, LA / Lambuth). Rodgers averaged 16.8 points in his first season as a starter and led the Comets to the East Division title. Hart led the West Division in both scoring (20.6) and rebounding (8.3) per game, while Haywood put up 13.5 points per contest.

McMurry University senior point guard Robert Moreno (Brownsville, TX / Collin County CC) was voted ASC West Division Defensive Player of the Year after leading the league with 68 steals in 26 games. Concordia Texas guard Nick Haynes (Irving, TX / IHS) took freshman of the year honors in the West after shooting 44.4 percent from 3-point range, while Hart took top newcomer honors. Howard Payne senior guard/forward Keith Perry (Kerrville, TX / Tivy HS) was named ASC West Division Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year. The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Ken DeWeese earned his fourth straight coach of the year honor after guiding the Cru to conference and division titles.

East Texas Baptist University junior post Josh Chambers (Mexia, TX / MHS) was named ASC East Division Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season after averaging a league-high 2.5 blocks per game. Mississippi College center Cameron Bounds (Clinton, MS / Hillcrest Christian School) was named the top freshman in the East after blocking 39 shots, while Haywood took top newcomer honors. Ozarks junior guard Andre Williams (San Antonio, TX / Earl Warren HS) was voted ASC East Division Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year. Texas-Dallas’ Terry Butterfield took coach of the year honors for the second straight season after guiding an ASC East title and having the Comets nationally-ranked the entire season.
