RICHARDSON, Texas –– Mississippi College’s Patrick Stanton and McMurry University’s Will Davis – both seniors – have been voted division players of the year to highlight the 2010 American Southwest Conference men’s tennis awards as voted on by the league’s 13 head coaches, the ASC office announced on Tuesday (May 4).

Stanton (Lafayette, LA / LHS) earned the title of East Division Player of the Year after going 11-4 in No. 1 singles play – including a perfect 5-0 mark in divisional play. Stanton also helped the Choctaws to a berth in the ASC Championships.

Davis (Houston, TX / Midwestern State) was named West Division Player of the Year after posting three wins at No. 1 singles in league play to help his squad claim their second straight division crown and an appearance in the ASC Championships title match.

Both Stanton and Davis were also named to their respective division’s First Team at the No. 1 singles position. Stanton was the ASC All-Conference selection at No. 1 singles and a second team East pick at No. 2 doubles with teammate John Downing. Davis was a first team West selection at No. 1 doubles with teammate Bryan Rainwater.

Also appearing on the ASC All-Conference Team were Rainwater (No. 2 singles), Texas-Tyler’s Adam Chirhart (No. 3 singles), Howard Payne University’s Ross Sidman (No. 4 singles), Hardin-Simmons University’s Trey Chavez (No. 5 singles) and McMurry’s Levi Cockrill (No. 6 singles). Texas-Tyler had all three doubles positions in David Ashlock and Andrew Reznik (No. 1s), Brad Fenter and Nick Kreines (No. 2s) and Chihart and Joshau Chavez (No. 3s). Kevin Wright and Austin Gonzalez of Texas-Tyler were at-large selections as members of the ASC champion team.

Texas-Tyler’s Chavez (East) and Howard Payne sophomore Edward Martinez (West) were named newcomers of the year, while LeTourneau University’s Carlos Cantu (East) and McMurry’s Levi Cockrill (West) took top freshman honors. Ashlock (East), a senior, and Howard Payne senior Chris Sutton (West) were voted sportsmanship athletes of the year. Texas-Tyler’s Chris Bizot (East), who guided an ASC title and East Division crown, and McMurry’s Mark Hathorn (West), who guided a runner-up finish for the ASC championship and a West crown, took top coaching honors.
