ASC Men's Tennis All-Conference Teams, Awards Announced

RICHARDSON, Texas –– Texas-Tyler junior Joshua Chavez and McMurry sophomore Chris Bumann have been named division most valuable players to highlight the 2011 American Southwest Conference men’s tennis awards as voted on by the league’s 13 head coaches, the ASC office announced on Wednesday (May 4).

Chavez (Harlingen, TX / Prairie View A&M) earned the title of East Division Most Valuable Player after going 13-6 overall and 5-0 in division play at No. 1 singles. He helped guide the Patriots to conference and division titles.

Bumann (Abilene, TX / Wylie HS) earned the title of West Division Most Valuable Player after going 6-0 overall and 3-0 in division play at No. 1 singles. He guided the War Hawks to 15 wins over their first 16 matches of the season.

Chavez and Bumann were also named to their respective division’s First Team at the No. 1 singles position. Chavez was the ASC All-Conference selection at No. 1 singles and a first team All-Conference and East pick at No. 1 doubles with teammate Andrew Reznik. Bumann was a first team West selection at No. 1 doubles with teammate Bryan Rainwater.

Also appearing on the ASC All-Conference Team in singles were Texas-Tyler’s Henrique Bellini (No. 2), Adam Chirhart (No. 3), Kevin Wright (No. 4), Kevin Singer (No. 5) and McMurry’s Tony Williams (No. 6). In doubles, Hardin-Simmons’ Andy Cariens and Emmanuel Navejas (No. 2) were honored as well as UT Tyler’s Singer and Wright (No. 3). Edward Timponi of Texas-Tyler was an at-large selection as a member of the ASC champion team.

Texas-Dallas senior Sebastian Leitz (East) and Sul Ross State senior Michael Pettus (West) were named newcomers of the year, while Texas-Tyler’s Bellini (East) and Hardin-Simmons’ Erich Bein (West) took top freshman honors. UT Tyler’s Wright (East), a junior, and Howard Payne junior Edward Martinez (West) were voted sportsmanship athletes of the year. Texas-Tyler’s Chris Bizot (East), who guided league and division crowns, and Hardin-Simmons’s Shane Williford (West), who guided a runner-up finish for the ASC title and a West crown, took top coaching honors.
