RICHARDSON, Texas –– Hardin-Simmons has been predicted to win its 10th consecutive and 15th overall American Southwest Conference women’s soccer title, it was announced on Wednesday (Aug. 22) by the conference office after a vote of the league’s head coaches and sports information directors. Taking preseason player of the year honors were HSU’s Katie Kuykendall and Courtney Cramer.

Hardin-Simmons, which went 20-2 overall (13-0 ASC) and reached the second round of the NCAA Division III tournament last season, totaled 337 points and received all but one of the possible 26 first-place votes to be the favorite in the annual preseason poll. Head coach Marcus Wood’s Cowgirls have gone 145 games without losing to a conference opponent and claimed eight consecutive ASC regular season crowns. HSU, which won the national title in 2010, scored a league-high 117 goals last season – 62 more than any other team in the ASC. The Cowgirls also topped the league with 18 shutouts.

Two-time conference champion Texas-Dallas (16-5, 12-1 ASC) was picked to finish as the runner-up with 306 points and landed the remaining first-place vote. Head coach John Antonisse’s Comets are coming off a season in which they received an at-large berth into the NCAA tournament for the first time in program history. UTD, which allowed just 10 goals last year, has advanced to the conference title game seven of the last 10 years – including 2011.

Texas-Tyler (10-6-3, 9-3-1 ASC), which has qualified for five straight conference tournaments and been the runner-up twice, was the choice for third place with 270 points. Coming off a program record for wins, Concordia Texas (14-6, 10-3 ASC) received 253 points to be the fourth-place pick. Howard Payne (11-6-1, 9-3 ASC) totaled 238 points to be in the fifth position and Mississippi College (10-7-1, 7-5-1 ASC) had 207 points to round out what would be the league’s six teams to qualify for the ASC Championship Tournament.

East Texas Baptist was picked to finish seventh with 190 points, followed by Mary Hardin-Baylor (160 pts.), Texas Lutheran (119 pts.) and LeTourneau (90 pts.) to conclude the top 10 spots. Louisiana College (79 pts.) was 11th, followed by Ozarks (62 pts.) and Schreiner (55 pts.).

Kuykendall (Weatherford, Texas / WHS), a 5-foot-6 senior forward/midfielder, has been named ASC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year for the second straight season. In 2011, she led the league with 51 points – 18 goals, 10 assists – en route to earning co-offensive player of year honors. Four of her goals were game-winners.

Cramer (Abilene, Texas / Wylie HS), a 5-foot-7 junior defender, has been named as ASC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. She spearheaded a unit that allowed just eight goals in 22 games last season and put together shutout streaks of eight and nine games.

Kuykendall and Cramer were each all-Americans and first team all-ASC selections last year.

The 2012 ASC season – the 17th in league history – begins as early as Aug. 31. The six-team, single elimination conference tournament is slated for Nov. 1-4 – with an off day on Nov. 3 – at the site of the regular season champion. An automatic berth into the NCAA Division III Women’s Soccer Championship will be on the line.

NOTES: New head coaches in the conference are Barry Elkins of Mary Hardin-Baylor, Myranda Sanders of Concordia Texas and Larry Schaffer of Texas Lutheran. . . . Former league member McMurry finished 5-12 overall and 3-10 in conference last season, while fellow ex-ASC institution Centenary went 10-8-1 overall but did not have a league record due to going through the NCAA Division III reclassifying process . . . . Hardin-Simmons is ranked No. 10 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA)/Continental Tire Division III Women's Coaches Top 25 Poll. . . .
