RICHARDSON, Texas –– Texas-Tyler’s Ryan Ybarra and Mary Hardin-Baylor’s Will Summers – both seniors –  have been named most valuable players in their respective divisions to highlight the 2013 American Southwest Conference men’s tennis awards as voted on by the league’s head coaches, the ASC office announced on Friday (May 3).

Ybarra (Palestine, Texas / Texas Tech) earned the title of East Division Most Valuable Player after going 14-2 overall in No. 1 singles, including a perfect run against division opponents. He also fueled an East title.

Summers (Belton, Texas / BHS) earned the title of West Division Most Valuable Player after going 7-2 in No. 1 singles, including four victories in division play that helped earn a West crown and the right to host the ASC tournament.

Ybarra and Summers were also named to the prestigious ASC All-Conference Team, sharing the No. 1 singles position, and landed on their respective division’s First Team at that position. Ybarra was also a part of the all-conference and all-division No. 1 doubles team with partner Daniel Brown. Summers and teammate Collin Davies held down their division’s first-team No. 2 doubles spot.

Also appearing on the ASC All-Conference Team in singles were Brown (No. 2) and Texas-Tyler teammates Ramon Martinez (No. 3), Ryan Spencer (No. 4), Kevin Singer (No. 5) and Edward Timponi (No. 6). In doubles, Texas-Tyler’s Singer and Spencer (No. 2) were honored as well as Texas-Dallas’ Byron Cole and Bryan Leib. Texas-Dallas’ Casey Clark, Matt Davis, Dustin Foster, Sander Kaasjager and Dennis Roy were at-large selections as members of the ASC champion team.

Mississippi College’s Taylor Griffith and East Texas Baptist’s Tyler Tolopka shared newcomer of the year honors in the East Division, while Schreiner’s Josh Ramirez took the award in the West Division. Brown, a junior, was named ASC East Division Newcomer of the Year. Spencer, a junior from Katy, Texas, won sportsmanship athlete of the year honors in the East, while Schreiner sophomore Austin Carrola, a Blanco, Texas, native, earned the title in the West. Texas-Tyler’s Chris Bizot (East) and Mary Hardin-Baylor’s James Cohagan (West) took coach of the year honors after guiding division crowns.
