Comets win Women's Basketball Crown for Fourth Time

BELTON, Texas - UT Dallas won its fourth American Southwest Championship in women's basketball Saturday night by defeating Mary Hardin-Baylor 63-58 at the Mayborn Campus Center.

The No. 16/18 Comets (24-4) also won the title in 2013, 2015 and 2017. They receive the ASC's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Division III Women's Basketball Championship. The field will be announced on Monday, February 25 at 1:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.

UTD managed to take a 15-10 lead after the first quarter, but the No. 9/11 Cru (25-3) battled back to lead 26-25 at the break.

The Comets led 56-51 with 4:27 left in the game, but the Cur managed to erase to tie it at 56-56 with at the 2:44 mark. Tied again at 58 all with 1:34 to play, UTD managed to score to the final five points of the game at the line, with two from sophomore guard Raenett Hughes and three from tournament MVP Victoria Pena.

For the game, the Comets shot 31.1 percent (19-of-61) from the field, 5-of-19 from three-point range and was 20-of-22 at the line to go with 47 rebounds, 14 assists, 18 turnovers, five blocks and five steals.

UMHB shot 36.4 percent (20-of-55) overall, 4-of-13 from outside and 14-of-19 at the free throw lien with 30 rebounds, 14 assists, five blocks and seven steals.

Pena led the UTD with 19 pints and four assists, while Hughes had 18 points, five rebounds and three steals. Katie Gunther added 10 points, five rebounds and a pair of blocks.

Junior guard Alicia Blackwell paced the Cru with 17 points and four assists. Sophomore guard Madison McCoy and Aubrie Elliott had nine points each and junior Kendall Rollins scored seven.
