TYLER, TX --- The University of Texas at Tyler has named Joanna Rathbun as the University’s new head women’s volleyball coach.

Rathbun comes to UT Tyler after serving as the head coach at the Fairhill School in Dallas since 2007. From 2001-2007, Rathbun was the head coach at Dallas Christian College where she started the volleyball program. Under Rathbun, DCCC won the 2007 National Christian College Athletic Association Southwest Conference Championship and she was selected as the league’s coach of the year.

“I am very excited about the opportunity to be the next head volleyball coach at UT Tyler, “said Rathbun. “My goal is to provide our players with competitive volleyball instruction in a positive, affirming environment and to elevate the UT Tyler program to the highest level.”

Rathbun also served as the head volleyball coach at Richland College from 1995-1997 and spent time as the head coach at Episcopal School of Dallas.

Rathbun is a former professional volleyball player and was ranked among the top 50 players in the nation in doubles sand volleyball.

“We are looking forward to Joanna leading our volleyball program. She has an extensive volleyball background and has had many great coaching accomplishments at the collegiate and high school levels,” UT Tyler athletic director James Vilade said. “From playing professionally to coaching an undefeated season Joanna has found a way to connect with the game of volleyball her entire life and we are proud to have her at UT Tyler.”

Rathbun is a graduate of Westmont College in Santa Barbara, Cal., and is nationally certified personal trainer.

Rathbun replaces Kristee Phelps who resigned after the season to take a position at UT San Antonio.
