Mary Hardin-Baylor, Hardin-Simmons, McMurry and Louisiana College all collected league wins, while Texas Lutheran came up big in non-conference action on Saturday (Oct. 9) during Week 6 of the American Southwest Conference football season. HSU, McMurry and LC all picked up their victories on the road.
Mary Hardin-Baylor 41, Mississippi College 31: Quincy Daniels ran for 102 yards and three touchdowns, becoming the ASC’s all-time leader in career rushing touchdowns in the process, as the nationally-ranked Cru prevailed in Belton, Texas. Daniels has now run for 42 scores, breaking the mark of 41 set by former teammate Jarvis Thrasher from 2004-2007. UMHB (5-0, 4-0 ASC) rolled up 490 yards of offense despite having the ball for just 22:25. Tommy Reyer was 39 of 64 passing for 476 yards and three touchdowns without an interception to lead MC (2-3, 0-3 ASC), which dropped its third straight. Jerrad Jefferson (13), Chad Cannon (12), Ty Dooley (11) and Javicz Jones (11) had double-digit tackles for the Cru, who never trailed and built a 31-10 lead at halftime.
Hardin-Simmons 56, Howard Payne 0: Justin Feaster threw for five touchdowns – three to ZaVious Robbins – and the Hardin-Simmons defense pitched its first shutout since 2005 with a win in Brownwood, Texas. Feaster was 17 of 27 for 252 yards without an interception, while Robbins caught eight balls for a career-high 162 yards for nationally-ranked HSU (5-1, 3-1 ASC). The Cowboys’ Derrick Grant also chipped in with 106 yards on just 10 carries. Hank Hornsby (nine tackled) and Roy Gamboa (fumble recovery, sack) led a defense that yielded just 169 yards of offense and recorded 16 tackles for loss. Dustin McClure had 10 tackles and Jhonoven Pati had a sack for HPU (2-4, 1-3 ASC).
McMurry 35, Sul Ross State 12: Jake Mullin threw four touchdown passes, Patrick Pryor ran for 108 yards and D.J. Baiza took back the first kickoff for a score in program history to lead McMurry to a victory in Alpine, Texas. McMurry (4-2, 2-2 ASC) trailed 6-0 late in the first quarter after a BJ Vickers TD reception from Terrance Young. Baiza then took the ensuing kickoff back 94 yards to end an 84-year drought and give McMurry a lead it would not relinquish. Mullin finished 20 of 37 for 252 yards without an interception. Josh McKinnis added nine tackles and a sack for McMurry. Sul Ross State (1-3, 1-2 ASC), which got as close as 14-12 in the second quarter, got 136 rushing yards on 13 carries from Randy Owens and 11 tackles and a sack from Charles Bryant.
Louisiana College 49, East Texas Baptist 21: Ben McLaughlin accounted for six touchdowns, Daron Barthlomew ran for 112 yards and Jordan Rideaux and Darnell Williams each went over 100 yards receiving with two scores as Louisiana College rolled in Marshall, Texas. McLaughlin finished 30 of 46 passing for 391 yards and four TDs without an interception. He also ran for two scores as LC (2-3, 2-1 ASC) racked up 585 yards of offense. Reggie Calhoun became the first player in the league this season to record two INTs in one game and led a Wildcat defense that held an opponent under 40 points for the first time this year. Al Lewis caught three passes for 104 yards and a TD, while Cody Finch had a game-high 12 tackles and Solahudeen Muhammad added 10 stops for ETBU (2-4, 1-3 ASC), which trailed just 21-14 at halftime.
Texas Lutheran 42, Trinity 14: Mitchell Bunger threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more and Texas Lutheran stayed unbeaten at home with a non-conference win in Seguin, Texas. Bunger finished 11 of 15 for 295 yards passing and totaled 40 yards on the ground. Steven Thrash added four catches for 167 yards and a score for TLU (3-2, 2-1 ASC), which built up a 42-0 lead by the end of the third quarter. Trinity (2-3), which got 99 yards receiving and a TD from Daniel South, had an eight-game regular season win streak against ASC opponents snapped. Brandon Thomas had six tackles and an interception to lead the Bulldogs’ defense, which stalled three Trinity drives inside the TLU 6-yard line that resulted in no points.
