ABILENE, Texas — McMurry’s men cruised to their 12th straight American Southwest Conference and the Texas Lutheran women’s team won its first ASC title since 2005 at the 2010 American Southwest Conference Track and Field Championships that were hosted by Hardin-Simmons University.
In the men’s team race McMurry outdistanced the field by scoring 326 total team points. Texas-Tyler had 132 points and Hardin-Simmons scored 116 points to finish third. Mississippi College (77), Sul Ross State (56) and Concordia (41) rounded out the field.
Brendon Kelso of Hardin-Simmons was the high point athlete of the year and the field athlete of the Year. Jeff Chandler of Texas-Tyler was the track athlete of the year. Kenneth Turner and Joshua Zu-Bolton of McMurry were named co-freshmen of the year. Ken Wheeler of Mississippi College was the Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year and Barbara Crousen of McMurry was named coach of the year.
In the women’s team race, Texas Lutheran won the 4x400 relay to hold off McMurry by 4.5 points. TLU had 255.5 and McMurry had 251 points. HSU was third with 129, Mississippi College finished fourth with 83.5, Texas-Tyler was fifth with 24 points, Concordia finished sixth with 11 points and Sul Ross State finished seventh with six points.
Breanna Anderson-Burton of McMurry was the high point athlete of the year. Jennifer Cooper and Liz Laubenberg of Mississippi College each won the track athlete of the year, Felicia Kennedy of McMurry was the field athlete of the year. Maloree Kendall of Hardin-Simmons was the freshman of the year. Cooper was named the sportsmanship athlete of the year and Patrick Zarate of Texas Lutheran was the ASC Coach of the Year.
Women’s Event Winners
Breanna Burton-Anderon won the women’s long jump with a leap of 18-5 ¼. Destiny Jones of Texas Lutheran won the triple jump with a jump of 36-10 ¼.
Felicia Kennedy of McMurry won the women’s hammer throw with a throw of 124-11 and also won the discus with a throw of 132-11. Brooke Basey of Texas Lutheran won the javelin with a throw of 122-01.
Holly Rollins of McMurry won the pole vault with a ASC Championship record height of 12-8 and LaTrece Morrer of Texas Lutheran won the high jump with a 5-3.75.
Maloree Kendall won the steeplechase with a ASC Championship record time of 12:11.40 and she also won the 800 meters with a time of 2:29.27. Jennifer Cooper of Mississippi College won the women’s 10,000 meters in a time of 42:17.63 and also won the 5,000 with a time of 20:06.84.
McMurry won the 4x100 relay with a time of 49.14. The team consisted of Breana Anderson-Burton, Ashley Kelsey, Porsha Dardy and Kendra Coleman.
Lindsey Hinton led a 1-2 finish for Hardin-Simmons in the 1,500. The timer malfunctioned for that race so no time was recorded.
Liz Laubenberg of Mississippi College won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.89 and finished off the hurdle double with a title in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:05.75. Lauren Rodgers of Hardin-Simmons won the 400-meters with a time of 59.20.
Kendra Coleman of McMurry won the 100 with a time of 12.37. Devin Evans of Texas Lutheran won the 200 with a time of 25.23. TLU placed first, second, fifth and sixth in the 200 and that put them on top for the first time in the meet.
TLU held off McMurry in the 4X400. Briana Aiken, Shyra Walker, Devin Evans and Trave Glenn ran a 4:07.69 and beat out McMurry by .05.
Men’s Champions
Brendon Kelso of Hardin-Simmons had a huge meet as he won the discus (141-08) and the shot put (44-07.5), finished second in the javelin and third in the hammer throw.
Eric Plamer won the men’s long jump with a leap of 22-10. Chris Stonestreet won the hammer throw with a toss of 158-09. Gavin Bass of McMurry won the triple jump with a leap of 44-5.25. Daniel Ellis of McMurry won the javelin with a throw of 187-06.
Cory Altenberg of McMurry won the pole vault with a height of 16-2. Stryker Pena of McMurry won the high jump with a flop of 6-4.75.
Jeff Chandler of Texas-Tyler won the long-distance trifecta as he won the 10,000 meters with a time of 35.06.45, 5,000 meters with a 16.25.53, and the 3000 steeplechase with a time of 10.08.
McMurry won both relays, winning the 4x100 with a time of 41.44 and the 4x400 with a time of 3:20.06.
Kenneth Wheeler of McMurry won the 1,500. Terry Smith of McMurry won the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.85 and Kevin Cunningham won the 400 hurdles with a time of 54.40. Cunningham also won the 400 with a 48.76.
Joshua Zo-Bolton won the 100 with a time of 10.44 and Shane Brogdon of Mississippi College won the 800 with a time of 1:59.11 and Kenneth Turner of McMurry won the 200 with a 21.18.
