Hardin-Simmons, McMurry, Louisiana College and East Texas Baptist all earned American Southwest Conference football victories on Saturday (Oct. 15), while Mary Hardin-Baylor posted a non-conference win. Points were aplenty as all winning teams scored at least 34 points and three went over 50. McMurry, which tallied 60 points, set a new NCAA Division III record with 848 yards of total offense.

Hardin-Simmons 64, Sul Ross State 39: Steven Rockwell and Derrick Grant combined for 426 yards rushing and each had three touchdowns as the Cowboys pulled away for a road win in Alpine, Texas. HSU (4-3, 2-3 ASC), which had 613 yards of total offense, led just 22-17 at halftime before beginning the third quarter with three straight TDs – one by Rockwell sandwiched by two from Travis Tatsch – to build up a 43-17 score and never look back. Dominique Carson ran for two scores and caught another, while Scotty Walden threw for 230 yards and three TDs to lead SRSU (1-5, 0-4 ASC). Emmanuel Akers (10 tackles) and Jonathan (eight tackles, one sack) spearheaded HSU’s defense. Robert Pysson had a game-high 14 stops for the Lobos.

McMurry 60, Texas Lutheran 16: Jake Mullin went 43 of 57 passing for a conference record 614 yards and four touchdowns without an interception and the War Hawks set a new NCAA Division III mark for total offense (848) in a rout on the road in Seguin, Texas. McMurry (5-2, 4-1 ASC), which has now won four straight, never trailed and got a shutout after halftime by its defense. R.J. Long caught two TDs, Justin Johnson ran for two more and Dustin Diamond caught 12 passes for 195 yards to also fuel McMurry. Corey Hall had five tackles for a loss of 21 yards, 2.5 sacks and a forced fumble to guide the War Hawks’ defense. Bradley Snowden had a game-high 11 tackles for TLU (4-2, 3-1 ASC), which had its three-game winning streak snapped.

No. -/21 Louisiana College 42, Howard Payne 14: Jamie Bunting threw for 298 yards and three touchdowns and Ryan Montague ran for two scores and caught another as the Wildcats jumped out early and never looked back for a road win in Brownwood, Texas. LC (5-1, 3-1 ASC) jumped out to a 35-7 lead at halftime. Terrance Bratten had three tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks to spearhead LC’s defensive unit that totaled five sacks and kept HPU (1-6, 1-4 ASC) off the scoreboard in the second and third quarter. Rick Henderson had a TD run that tied the game at 7-7 midway through the first quarter, while Victor Gonzales made a game-high 11 tackles for HPU.

East Texas Baptist 34, Mississippi College 21: Jair Stover ran for 158 yards on 25 carries and Seth Hubbard threw for 199 yards and two scores and the Tigers raced out to a commanding lead and earned a homecoming win in Marshall, Texas. ETBU (3-4, 2-3 ASC) built up a 34-0 lead until 11:24 left to play when MC (2-4, 1-3 ASC) got on the scoreboard with an 80-yard pass from Tommy Reyer to DeMarrion Buford-Hughes. ETBU’s defense – led DeWayne Hamilton (interception returned for a score), Solahudeen Muhammad (interception) and Matt Tarver (three tackles for loss, sack) – held MC’s offense to only one rushing yard. Brett Peddicord added a pair of field goals for the Tigers, who snapped a seven-game homecoming game skid.

No. 4/4 Mary Hardin-Baylor 52, Southern Oregon 12: LiDarral Bailey was 16 of 22 passing for 279 yards and three touchdowns without an interception and also ran for a score as the Cru rolled to a non-conference home win in Belton, Texas. UMHB (6-0), which responded with 31 straight points after trailing 3-0 early, also got six catches and for 158 yards and a TD from Damian Davis. The Cru’s defense, led by Ty Dooley’s 10 tackles, forced five turnovers and allowed only 47 rushing yards. SOU (3-4), an NAIA program, had its three-game winning streak snapped. Justin Akau had a game-high 11 stops for the Raiders.
