Football Week 5: UMHB, TLU Still Unbeaten in League Play

Mary Hardin-Baylor, McMurry, East Texas Baptist and Texas Lutheran all recorded victories on Saturday (Oct. 1) in American Southwest Conference football action. After five weeks of play, only UMHB remains unbeaten overall, while it shares an unblemished conference mark with TLU. Mississippi College was the only league team idle.

No. 4/4 Mary Hardin-Baylor 36, No. -/19 Louisiana College 10: The Cru shook off a 10-point deficit with 36 unanswered points and cruised to victory in a game that featured a pair of unbeatens in Belton, Texas. UMHB (4-0, 3-0 ASC) had three 100-yard rushers in Darius Wilson (171), LiDarral Bailey (110) and Elijah Hudson (103). LC (3-1, 1-1 ASC) led 10-0 after the first quarter, but UMHB responded with rushing scores from Bailey and Wilson and a 33-yard field goal from Chad Peevey to take a 17-10 lead at halftime. UMHB’s defense, which was led by Javicz Jones’ 14 tackles and 1.5 sacks, totaled three interceptions that all came over the Wildcats’ last four possessions. Cody Jones took the final one back 66 yards for a score. Dayne Reeves had eight catches for 121 yards for LC, which also got 11 tackles from both Richard Logan and Peter Ford.

McMurry 50, Howard Payne 3: Jake Mullin threw for 430 yards and four touchdowns, R.J. Long had 10 catches for 153 yards and two scores and Justin Johnson ran for 127 yards and two TDs as the War Hawks racked up 600 yards of offense and rolled in Brownwood, Texas. On the other side of the ball, McMurry (3-2, 2-1 ASC) did not allow a single passing yard and allowed HPU (1-4, 1-2 ASC) to just 130 yards of total offense. Markell Rice has two tackles for loss and a sack, while Will Morris had an interception for McMurry. The only score for HPU came on a Mitchell Bailey field goal in the third quarter. McMurry, which also got a receiving TD from Johnson, scored all its points after the first quarter.

East Texas Baptist 26, Hardin-Simmons 22: The Tigers erased a late 16-point deficit by scoring three straight touchdowns in Marshall, Texas, and collected their first win over the Cowboys in program history. ETBU (2-3, 1-2 ASC) had not beaten HSU (2-3, 0-2 ASC) in 11 previous meetings. Trailing 22-6 with 11:21 to play in the third quarter, the Tigers got touchdown a touchdown run and pass from Sed Harris and a TD scamper by Jair Stover to provide the final tally. Stover finished with 158 rushing yards, while Harris had 130. Scott Newberry hit three field goals for HSU, which has now lost three straight games. Randy Rasmussen (12), Solahudeen Muhammad (12), Collin Bieschke (11) and Jordan Hayes (10) all had double-digit tackles for the Tigers. Emmanuel Akers had 10 solo stops for HSU.

Texas Lutheran 43, Sul Ross State 26: Mitchell Bunger threw for three touchdowns, Dominique Hardaway ran for 100 yards and accounted for three scores as the Bulldogs collected a victory in Alpine, Texas, and topped 40 points for the third straight game. TLU (4-1, 3-0 ASC) is off to its best start since 1984. TLU blew open a 26-20 halftime lead with two touchdowns and an Allen Cain field goal in the third quarter. Cain finished with three field goals for the second straight week. Both teams were held scoreless in the fourth quarter. SRSU (1-3, 0-2 ASC) got 139 yards rushing from Dominque Carson and seven catches for 152 yards and two TDs from Lee Carothers. Rodrick Sparks had two tackles for loss and a sack for TLU, while Robert Pyssen had 17 tackles, a forced fumble and two sacks to lead SRSU.
