Mary Hardin-Baylor, Louisiana College, Hardin-Simmons and Mississippi College all earned American Southwest Conference football victories on their home fields on Saturday (Oct. 22). All winning teams except for MC topped the 50-point mark. The Choctaws, however, still put up 30 and won their homecoming game for the first time in 12 years. Only McMurry was idle this week.

No. 4/4 Mary Hardin-Baylor 54, East Texas Baptist 30: After trailing at halftime, the Cru exploded for 30 third-quarter points to run away for a victory in Belton, Texas. UMHB (7-0, 5-0 ASC), which trailed 21-17 at halftime, got a 98-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Tariekus Ellis to begin the second half. The Cru then added a pair of TD passes and a TD run by LiDarral Bailey and an extra-point return by Ty Dooley to build a 47-30 lead before the fourth quarter. ETBU (3-5, 2-4 ASC) got a 290-yard rushing performance from quarterback Sed Harris, who also threw for 117 yards and a TD. Darius Wilson ran for 176 yards for UMHB, which was led on defense by Javicz Jones’ 18 tackles. Solahudeen Muhammad has 12 stops for the Tigers.

No. 25/21 Louisiana College 56, Sul Ross State 21: Darnell Williams caught seven passes for 200 yards and the Wildcats turned up the heat in the second quarter with 28 points to cruise to victory in Pineville, La. With the win, LC (6-1, 4-1 ASC) secured its best start in program history. After leading 14-7 after the first quarter, the Wildcats got touchdowns from Williams (87-yard pass), Daron Bartholomew (1-yard run), Ryan Montague (53-yard run) and Reggie Calhoun (68-yard fumble recovery) to build up a 42-7 lead at halftime. LC’s defense, which snared four interceptions, was led by Richard Logan’s seven tackles – three for loss – and one sack. Lee Carothers had seven catches for 139 yards for SRSU (1-6, 0-5), which also got a game-high 10 tackles from Robert Pyssen.

Hardin-Simmons 67, Texas Lutheran 17: Zach Stewart and Cody Jones hooked up for five touchdowns through the air and the Cowboys racked up 680 yards of total offense to cruise in Abilene, Texas. HSU (5-3, 3-3 ASC), which posted 20 points in every quarter but the first, has now won three straight after dropping three in a row. Jones’ five TD grabs set a new conference record and he finished with nine catches for 207 yards. Stewart threw for 421 yards and six TDs. Jonathan Petty led HSU on defense with 11 tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. TLU (4-3, 3-2 ASC) had just one offensive TD, coming on a Dominique Hardaway run to open the game’s scoring. Kyle McNally had a game-high 14 tackles and took an interception back 41 yards for a score.

Mississippi College 34, Howard Payne 21: Tommy Reyer threw for 306 yards and four touchdowns, Jarryn Bingham tied a conference record with four sacks and the Choctaws earned a homecoming win in Clinton, Miss. MC (3-4, 2-3 ASC) snapped a three-game skid. Two of Reyer’s TD tosses went to DeMarrion Buford-Hughes, who finished with three catches for 132 yards. Buford-Hughes’ scores broke a 7-7 tie and a 14-14 tie in the first half. Along with his record, Bingham had six tackles – five for loss – a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. HPU (1-7, 1-5 ASC), which has lost five straight, got 135 yards and a TD on 22 carries from Adrian Lighteard. He also had a receiving TD. Demetrius Cody returned an interception 78 yards for the Yellow Jackets.
