Mary Hardin-Baylor, Sul Ross State, McMurry and Louisiana College all earned American Southwest Conference football victories on Saturday (Oct. 29). McMurry’s victory came against Abilene, Texas, rival Hardin-Simmons, snapping a 23-game losing skid to the Cowboys that dated back to 1963. Sul Ross State needed overtime to prevail, while nationally-ranked squads Mary Hardin-Baylor and Louisiana College won on the road. Only East Texas Baptist was idle.
No. 4/4 Mary Hardin-Baylor 57, Howard Payne 6: The Cru scored a touchdown of the first play from scrimmage and never looked back, while its defense allowed only 122 yards of total offense in a road win in Brownwood, Texas. UMHB (8-0, 6-0 ASC) led 36-0 at halftime and didn’t allow HPU (1-8, 1-6 ASC) to score until 4:46 left in the game. Caleb Moore ran for three TDs and LiDarral Bailey connected with Damian Davis for two first-quarter scoring passes to lead the Cru’s offense. Andy McAteer had seven tackles, including five for loss, and Javicz Jones returned a fumble 25 yards for a score to guide UMHB on defense. Adrian Lighteard scored on a 15-yard run for HPU.
Sul Ross State 49, Mississippi College 42 (OT): The host Lobos shook off a pair of double-digit comebacks and prevailed in Alpine, Texas. SRSU (2-6, 1-5 ASC), which snapped a five-game losing streak, got a 22-yard pass from Scotty Walden to Cordrick Mobley on the first overtime possession that proved to be the game-winner. The Lobos’ defense shut down MC (3-5, 2-4 ASC) on four passing attempts after that. Walden tossed three TDs, while Dominique Carson ran for 177 yards and three scores on 26 carries to fuel SRSU. Tommy Reyer accounted for five scores, including four passing TDs without an interception to help MC rally from deficits of 21 and 14 points.
McMurry 24, Hardin-Simmons 14: The War Hawks forced five turnovers and went to the ground attack on offense to topple their Abilene, Texas, rival and claim the Wilford Moore Trophy for the first time since 1963 in front of a standing-room only crowd. Host McMurry (6-2, 5-1 ASC), whose losing streak to the Cowboys went back 23 games, built up a 17-7 lead at halftime and never trailed. HSU (5-4, 3-4 ASC) kept things close and pulled within 17-14 with 14:50 to play. McMurry responded with a 1-yard TD run by Jake Mullin to seal the victory. Justin Johnson ran for 128 yards on 28 carries, while Austin Cleere had 10 tackles and an interception to lead the War Hawks. Steven Rockwell ran for 134 yards and a TD on 17 carries, while Jonathan Wilder made 13 tackles and snared two interceptions for HSU.
No. 25/21 Louisiana College 37, Texas Lutheran 16: Entering the fourth quarter with a tie game, the Wildcats exploded for 21 points to run away with a road victory in Seguin, Texas. Jamie Bunting had two touchdown passes –to Dayne Reeves and Ryan Montague – in the fourth quarter before Montague scampered in from 14 yards out to seal the win for LC (7-1, 5-1 ASC). The Wildcats’ defense allowed just one TD – a pass by Mitchell Bunger to Sherome Miller in the first quarter. Allen Cain drilled three field goals for TLU’s other scores. Bunting finished with four TD passes and Montague had 113 rushing yards on 26 carries. Richard Logan made 11 tackles and Peter Ford had four tackles for loss, two forced fumbles and 1.5 sacks to guide the Wildcats’ defense. Kyle McNally had 14 tackles for TLU (4-4, 3-3 ASC), which has dropped three straight.
