RICHARDSON, Texas –– Texas-Dallas senior forward Leah Bowyer and Hardin-Simmons junior forward Katie Kuykendall and senior goalkeeper Rebecca Roth won player of the year awards to highlight the 2011 American Southwest Conference women’s soccer awards, the ASC office announced on Wednesday (Nov. 9) after a vote of the league’s head coaches.
Bowyer (Lubbock, TX / Coronado HS) and Kuykendall (Weatherford, TX / WHS) shared the title of ASC Offensive Player of the Year. Bowyer led the conference with 19 goals and added 10 assists, while Kuykendall was tops in points (50) with 18 goals and 14 assists.
Roth (Weatherford, TX / WHS) was named ASC Defensive Player of the Year after leading the league with a 0.26 goals-against average. She also posted seven shutouts.
Bowyer, Kuykendall and Roth were all named to the ASC All-Conference First Team. Kuykendall and Roth led the Cowgirls to conference and regular season titles, while Bowyer guided the Comets to the ASC title game and an at-large berth into the NCAA playoffs.
Concordia Texas forward Kendall Williams (Mesquite, TX / Sachse HS) was voted ASC Offensive Freshman of the Year after scoring 14 goals, while Texas-Dallas defender Emily Hughes (Orange, TX / Little Cypress Mauriceville HS) earned the title of ASC Defensive Freshman of the Year after helping guide a unit that produced 15 shutouts in 20 games.
Roth also doubled as ASC Women’s Soccer Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year, an honor she shared with Mississippi College senior defender Hannah Langley (Madison, MS / Madison Central HS).
Concordia Texas’ Corey Holton was named coach of the year after guiding the Tornados to a program-record 14 wins and their first-ever ASC tournament victory.
