RICHARDSON, Texas – Texas-Tyler catcher Brittanni Hanna, Louisiana College right-hander Rene Schwartzenburg, Concordia Texas shortstop Jessica Rattan and Mary Hardin-Baylor right-hander Erica White – all seniors – earned top individual honors to highlight the 2011 American Southwest Conference softball awards following a division-only vote by head coaches, the conference office announced on Tuesday (May 3).
Hanna (Mesquite, TX / North Mesquite HS) was named East Division Player of the Year after batting .431 with six home runs, 14 doubles and 27 RBIs. She also scored 37 runs, walked 22 times and struck out just six times.
Schwartzenburg (Marksville, LA / MHS) was voted East Division Pitcher of the Year after going 16-4 with a 1.55 ERA and 136 strikeouts over 135 1/3 innings of work. She also became the conference’s all-time wins and strikeouts leader.
Rattan (Austin, TX / Cedar Park HS) was named West Division Player of the Year after batting .462 with seven home runs, three triples, a league-leading 18 doubles and 33 RBIs. She also scored 33 runs and walked 24 times.
White (Lewisville, TX / LHS) was voted West Division Pitcher of the Year after going 16-4 with three saves and a league-leading 0.95 ERA. She also struck out 108 batters and recorded a conference-high eight shutouts.
Hanna, Schwartzenburg, Rattan and White were all first team selections in their respective divisions.
Other East Division award winners were Texas-Tyler sophomore first baseman Brittney Batten (Huntington, TX / Galveston College), who was named newcomer of the year after belting 11 home runs. East Texas Baptist right-hander Shelby Parker (Brazoria, TX / BHS) took freshman of the year honors after going 14-1. LeTourneau junior utility player Christin Mickelboro (Longview, TX / LHS) and Texas-Tyler senior second baseman Whitney Wyly (Hardin, TX / Texas-San Antonio) shared the division’s sportsmanship athlete of the year award.
Other West Division award winners were Hardin-Simmons junior first baseman Blair Wallace (Abilene, TX / Southwestern), who was dubbed as newcomer of the year after hitting 10 doubles. Schreiner catcher Kayla Avirett (West Columbia, TX / WCHS) earned freshman of the year honors after batting .345. Howard Payne senior first baseman Ashley Silva (Angleton, TX / AHS) was voted the division’s sportsmanship athlete of the year.
East Texas Baptist (Janae Shirley, Bill Galloway, Porsha Harrison, Guy Shirley and Megan Beard) and Mary Hardin-Baylor (Larry Hennig and Julie Norris) earned the East and West Division coaching staff of the year awards, respectively. Head coach Shirley and the Lady Tigers won conference and division titles, while Hennig and the Cru took the other division crown.
