After an action-packed Week 7 of American Southwest Conference football on Saturday (Oct. 13), the league now has two teams tied for first place (Mary Hardin-Baylor and Hardin-Simmons), a squad that no longer has a 12-game losing streak (Howard Payne) and another (Sul Ross State) that saw its running back Dominique Carson set a conference record for scoring eight touchdowns in a game – not to mention helping the Lobos combine with Texas Lutheran to produce the highest-scoring game in league history (135 points).

No. 2/2 Mary Hardin-Baylor 30, No. -/21 Louisiana College

PINEVILLE, La. – The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team stole the momentum on the final play of the first half and then dominated the second on the way to a 30-3 victory over Louisiana College Saturday in Pineville, Louisiana.
The 2nd-ranked Cru blocked a field goal on the final play of the second quarter and
Javicz Jones scooped up the ball and returned it 95 yards for a score to turn a potential 6-0 deficit into a 6-3 UMHB lead. The Cru never looked back on the way to improving to 6-0 overall and 3-0 in American Southwest Conference play on the season. The Wildcats entered the game ranked 21st in the country and fall to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in ASC play on the year with the loss.
Both teams were sluggish offensively in the first half. UMHB drove the ball well between the 20-yard lines but missed a pair of first quarter field goal attempts. Louisiana College took a 3-0 lead on a 25-yard field goal from Adam Olivares with 2:18 remaining in the second quarter. The Cru would be forced to punt and the Wildcats drove to the UMHB five-yard line with 0.1 left on the clock. Olivares would set up for a 22-yard field goal try, but
Korey Steward broke through to block the kick and Jones scooped it up, broke down the Cru sideline and broke two tackles on the way to a 95-yard touchdown return. The extra point was off the mark, but UMHB would take a 6-3 lead and all of the momentum into the locker room at halftime.
LiDarral Bailey hit
Geoff Myles for a 64-yard TD pass on the first offensive play of the second half to push the Cru lead to 13-3. UMHB marched 80 yards in 10 plays on its next possession as Bailey hit
Elijah Hudson with an 11-yard swing pass for a score to make it 20-3 Cru. Bailey found
Jon Ross with a 16-yard scoring strike with 2:19 left in the third to stretch the lead to 27-3 and
Chad Peevey closed out the scoring with a 31-yard field goal with 5:30 left to play.
The Cru defense held the Wildcats to just 143 yards of total offense in the second half and intercepted a pair of LC passes. UMHB finished the game with 230 rushing yards, 229 passing yards and 459 yards of total offense while not turning the ball over. LC finished with 300 yards of total offense, but just 42 rushing yards.
Bailey was 17-22 passing for 229 yards and three touchdowns.
Darius Wilson ran for 106 yards on 15 carries in his first action in four weeks and Myles finished with six catches for 112 yards and a score.
Cody Jones had a game-high nine tackles for the UMHB defense and
Javicz Jones had five tackles, an interception and a pass break-up to go with his touchdown return.
Jamie Bunting was 26-46 passing for Louisiana College for 258 yards. D'Mario Parker caught 11 balls for 109 yards for the Wildcats and Ryan Montague managed just 41 rushing yards on 16 carries. Peter Ford had nine tackles and two sacks for the LC defense before leaving the game with an injury.
The Cru has now won all 12 meetings with Louisiana College and the victory is the 30th straight regular season win for UMHB. The Cru has also won 22 consecutive ASC games and 55 of its last 56 league contests. Saturday's victory sets up a showdown with Hardin-Simmons next Saturday in Belton. That game will kick off at 1:00 PM at Tiger Field on homecoming for UMHB.
Hardin-Simmons 42, East Texas Baptist 22

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' football team won its fourth straight game with a 42-22 homecoming win over East Texas Baptist on Saturday afternoon at Shelton Stadium.
The Cowboys set the tone with a big first quarter and never looked back en route to improving to 4-2 overall and 3-0 in ASC play. HSU will play Mary Hardin-Baylor next Saturday at 1 p.m. with outright possession of the American Southwest Conference lead on the line.
HSU forced a quick three-and-out on the first possession of the game and then took the ball after a short pint into the wind and went 43 yards in six plays.
Logan Turner capped the drive with a 14-yard touchdown pass to
Corey Jones.
On the ensuing possession,
Jonathan Petty ripped the ball out of John Gables hands and returned it 59 yards for a touchdown to make it 14-0 with 8:17 to play in the first quarter. HSU then forced another three-and-out and went 43 yards again, this time in four plays.
Tevin Mitchell capped the drive with a 10-yard touchdown run.
ETBU scored on the first play of the next drive when Kwame' Spikes slipped through a couple of tackles and raced 55 yards for a touchdown on a pass from Seth Hubbard. The snap was bad on the PAT and it failed to make it 21-6.
HSU then went 66 yards in nine plays as Turner found Mitchell on a 22-yard screen pass for a touchdown to make it 28-6 with 1:07 to play in the first quarter. Cory McNeil kicked a 30-yard field goal for ETBU for the only point of the second quarter and HSU led 28-9 at halftime.
The Cowboys took the opening kickoff of the second half and drove 64 yards in 11 plays.
Devin Carver did the honors from one yard out and HSU led 35-9. It stayed that way until the first play of the fourth quarter when Turner hit
Colton Brewer on a 25-yard touchdown pass to make it 42-9.
ETBU added two late touchdowns on a 2-yard Khadafi Davis run and a 13-yard TD pass from Hubbard to Tyler Bates to set up the final score.
Turner completed 26-of-41 passes for HSU for 303 yards and three touchdowns. He now has 18 touchdown passes and just one interception in the last five games for the Cowboys. Corey Jones had 10 catches for 92 yards and Devin Carver had 18 carries for 101 yards.
James Place had eight tackles and two pass break ups and
Jonathan Wilder had eight tackles for the Cowboy defense.
Hubbard completed 17-of-35 passes for 249 yards and two touchdowns for ETBU and Spikes had seven catches for 122 yards. ETBU fell to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in ASC action with the loss.
Howard Payne 27, Mississippi College 14

BROWNWOOD, Texas – Howard Payne quarterback
Thomas Head accounted for all four of the HPU touchdowns as the Yellow Jackets pick up their first win of the season 27-14 over Mississippi College. The victory also snapped a 12-game skid dating back to last season.
Thomas Head was 13 of 25 passing for 135 yards and two TDs. Head also scored two rushing TDs on 15 attempts for 83 total yards.
After MC scored on their second drive of the game, the Jackets forced a fumble in MC territory and scored on a Head nine yard run. With the short field the drive was six plays over 33 yards.
MC jumped ahead in the second quarter on a four yard run with 2:03 left to play in the first half. After a 49 yard kick return by
Karl Stewart, the Jackets used the remaining two minutes in the half to score in six plays.
Thomas Head threw his first TD pass of the day, a 14 yard pass to
Astin Murray. It was Murray's first TD reception of the year.
The Jackets broke the 14-14 tie on a one yard run by
Thomas Head with 5:15 to play in the third. The TD was the first third quarter TD by the Jackets this season.
Leading 21-14, the Jackets added an insurance score when Head's pass found Tristan Fuentes for a 46 The
Joshua Martinez extra point was no good and the Jackets led 27-14 with 9:17 left to play.
Adrian Lighteard had 19 carries for 79 yards and
Astin Murray led the HPU receiving crew with four catches for 33 yards and the TD.
Bo Ross led the Yellow Jacket defense with nine tackles (6 solo) and three sacks.
Xavier McFalls and
J.D. King each added eight tackles.
The Jackets improve to 1-5 overall and 1-2 in ASC play. Mississippi College falls to 1-5 overall and 0-3 in conference.
Howard Payne will travel to Marshall, Texas to play East Texas Baptist University next week. It will be a 1:00 pm kickoff.
Sul Ross State 70, Texas Lutheran 65

SEGUIN, Texas – Dominique Carson set two new program records scoring eight touchdowns – also an American Southwest Conference top mark – and rushing for 319 yards as Sul Ross State defeated Texas Lutheran 70-65 Saturday evening at Matador Stadium.
The two teams combined for a conference record 135 points.
The Lobos set the tone in the first quarter shutting out TLU 28-0. Carson would score three of Sul Ross's four touchdowns in the quarter. He had run of 70 yards on the second play of the game that put Sul Ross on the board and ahead 7-0 with 14:33 on the clock. A.J. Springer would then connect with Carson for a 13-yard score with 12:58 remaining. Springer then scored on a 3-yard run that put Sul Ross up 21-0 with 7:47 left in the quarter. Later in the quarter, Springer found Carson again on a 83-yard strike with 0:25 left on the clock that moved the Lobos ahead 28-0.
In the second quarter, the Bulldogs would and Lobos would trade points. TLU would score in the opening minutes of quarter to get on the board and make it 28-7 with 12:44 left in the half. Sul Ross answered right back as Carson scored on a 1-yard run that improved the Lobos' lead to 35-7 with 11:23 on the clock. The Bulldogs would come right back and score to cut the lead to 35-14 with 9:51 to play. Carson would have his second score of the quarter after a 53-yard run that put Sul Ross ahead 42-14 with 3:18 remaining. TLU's Allen Cain would later kick a 34-yard field goal as time expired that would end the half with Sul Ross leading 42-17.
Texas Lutheran would start off the the third quarter scoring on their first drive to trail 42-24 with 11:21 left to play in the quarter. Sul Ross did not let up as they scored on their next three drives. Carson would score twice on runs of 41 yards and 27 yards. Alex Lovan would then score on a 14-yard run that gave the Lobos a 63-24 lead with 4:30 on the clock.
Sul Ross would be held scoreless for almost the next quarter as the Bulldogs' defense forced the Lobos to punt three times and recovered a fumble. TLU's offense scored on each of their next five drives, cutting the marging to 63-58 with 4:40 left in the game. On Sul Ross's ensuing drive, Carson would provide the Lobos some breathing room with a 63-yard run that put them ahead 70-58 with 3:41 remaining. TLU would score later with just 0:12 left in the game to trail 70-65. Sul Ross would then recover the onside kick and run out the clock to prevail with a 70-65 victory.
Carson led the Lobos' running attack with 319 yards on 22 carries and 6 touchdowns. Springer finished with 64 yards and a touchdown while Alex Lovan had 16 yards and a touchdown.
Springer had his fourth game of season without an interception as he went 20 of 29 for 277 yards and two touchdowns. He is now tied for the school record for most touchdown passes in a season with 24.
Carson recorded three receptions for 99 yards and two touchdowns. Lee Carothers finished with 7 receptions for 75 yards. Calvon Henderson had 6 catches for 63 yards and Cordrick Mobley had 5 catches for 42 yards.
Defensively, the Lobos recorded 5 sacks for 28 yards and forced three turnovers. Jural Hickman and Chase Moody each had an interception. Terrance Young led the team with 9 tackles.
The Lobos are now 3-3 (2-1 ASC) on the season and will host Louisiana College on October 20th in Alpine at Jackson Field at 1pm.
