CLINTON, Miss. --- The Mississippi College men’s soccer team defeated Texas-Dallas, 5-4 in penalty kicks, to win the American Southwest Conference Championship for the first time in school history on Sunday afternoon at Longabaugh Field.

“This win is attributed to all of our alumni and previous coaches that helped build this program,” said Coach Kevin Johns. “We’ve come close two other times and not been able to finish the job.  This time we were able to get it down and now we’re headed to the NCAA Tournament.”

The Choctaws earn an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, which begins next week. MC will find out 12:00 p.m. tomorrow where they’ll be playing.

Senior Hugo Flores gave MC an early 1-0 lead, scoring on an assist by junior BJ Williams in the 6th minute of play.  Both teams had more opportunities to score, but neither could convert and the score remained 1-0 at the end of the first half.

With less than three minutes to play, UTD’s Michael Matthews scored on a header from a throw in by Jordan Rubel to tie the game 1-1 and sending the game into overtime.

After neither team could score in two overtime periods, they headed to a shootout.  Junior goalkeeper Robert Jackson made three saves, including a save against Omar Jaroun for the win.

“There’s a lot of pressure when you’re in a sudden victory situation,” said tournament MVP Adrian Moreno. “You can’t make any mistakes out there and our team really rose to the challenge.”

When asked about consecutive shootouts, Jackson said, “I don’t think it was any easier. You are still at a disadvantage as a goalkeeper. If you make a save, you’re a hero. If they score, there’s nothing you can do about it. What a great job by my teammates.”
