Pineville, La. – Seniors Shamika Singleton and Lashanda Luckey each accumulated a double-double as the Concordia University Texas women's basketball team defeated 22nd-ranked Louisiana College, 73-64, to capture its first American Southwest Conference Tournament championship on Sunday, Feb. 26 at H.O. West Fieldhouse.

The Tornados, who snapped the Wildcats' 40-game home court winning streak that dated back to the 2008-09 season, earned the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Concordia never trailed in the contest and scored seven of the game's first nine points. A Mallory Horn jumper tied the game at 13 and a 3-pointer by Natasha Gottlieb made it 19-all with 7:39 to play in the first half, but Shamika Singleton came back the other way and converted a fastbreak jumper to make it 21-19 and put the visitors ahead for good. Termeka Canada, who had 13 of her game-high 20 points in the first half, extended the lead to double figures at 33-23 with a bucket at the 3:18 mark before making another jumper that put her team up by a 37-26 score at halftime.

The Tornados continued to pound it down low to Canada in the early going of the second half and went ahead 42-29 when the Temple Junior College transfer finished a conventional 3-point play. The Wildcats came within five at 46-41 on a Kala Chenier jumper with 12:07 on the clock, but the Tornados responded with eight straight points coming from four different players to breakout to a 13-point lead. The deficit was cut to as low as six before Luckey nailed six straight field goals to put the game on ice.

Concordia's Singleton and Luckey each set a career high for rebounds in their double-double efforts and were named to the all-tournament team. Singleton, the tournament's most valuable player, finished with 13 points and 17 boards, while Luckey recorded 18 points and 13 rebounds off the bench. Canada added a career-best 20 points off the bench and was also named to the all-tournament squad.

Louisiana College (24-4), which leads the nation in scoring at just under 90 points per game, was paced by Gottlieb's 12-point effort off the bench. She also had five boards, three assists and two blocks. Roslyn Wilmer added nine points and seven rebounds.

Concordia (23-4) will learn where it is headed for the 2012 NCAA Tournament when the selections are announced tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 p.m. Central Standard Time.
