Sul Ross State 42, Hardin-Simmons 38
ALPINE, Texas – Saturday's football game between Sul Ross State University and visiting Hardin-Simmons had a little bit of everything.

The teams combined for 924 yards worth of offense, 51 first downs, and nine turnovers.

But Sul Ross State came up with two of the biggest plays late in the game.  Junior quarterback Jeremy Boatright (Mesa, AZ/Mountain View HS) connected with junior wide receiver Cordrick Mobley (Cameron, TX/Cameron Yoe HS) for a 71 yard touchdown with 1:47 left in the third quarter, then hit junior receiver Del Wilson (Rialto, CA/Chaffey CC) with a59-yard scoring pass with 3:12 left in the fourth quarter as the Lobos came from behind to defeat the Cowboys, 42-38, and earn their first win of the season in and American Southwest Conference game at Jackson Field.

The Lobos, who never led until their final touchdown, battled back all day. Trailing, 38-28 after HSU senior kicker Mike Hursh (San Antonio, TX/Reagan HS) connected on a 33-yard field goal with 2:20 remaining in the third quarter, the Lobos got the ball back at their own 29 yard line. After two incompletions, Boatright found Mobley wide open for a score that cut the HSU lead to three points at 38-35.

Both teams had their chances in the fourth quarter before SRSU went ahead for good. Boatright's pass was intercepted by junior defensive back Ben Hartley (Dallas, TX/Lutheran HS) on the Lobos' first possession of the fourth quarter. Lobo senior defensive Randall Carroll (Pasadena, CA/UCLA) returned the favor six plays later, picking off a pass from HSU senior quarterback Josh Christian (Spring, TX/Concordia) at the Lobo 45 and returning it 20 yards.

Sul Ross State promptly drove to the HSU 15, but a fourth-down incompletion gave the Cowboys the ball. The Lobos held Hardin-Simmons on their next series, forcing a punt and setting up their final drive.

HSU got the ball at their own 40 after SRSU took the lead, and drove to the Lobo 18. SRSU forced three straight incompletions before sophomore defensive lineman Chris Dorsey (Eagle Lake, TX/Blinn CC) sacked Christian on fourth down, allowing the Lobos to take possession and run out the clock.

"That last sack was a big play by Chris Dorsey," said Sul Ross State Head Coach John Tyree.  "He is a big time player."

The Lobos scored first, connecting on a five-yard pass from Boatright to Mobley with 12:14 left in the first quarter and leading 6-0 after the extra point failed. HSU came right back, sandwiching a pair of scoring runs by senior running back Tevin Mitchell (Quanah, TX/Quanah HS) around a 50-yard scoring pass from freshman quarterback Weston Garner (College Station, TX/A&M Consolidated HS) to take a 21-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Garner's 28 yard pass to junior running back Bryce Johnson (Richmond, TX/Terry HS) early in the second quarter made it 28-6 before the Lobos rallied. Boatright hit Mobley for a score from four yards out to make it 21-13, and junior linebacker Brandon Thornton (Conroe, TX/Blinn CC) and junior defensive lineman Daryn Young (Spring, TX/Spring HS) stopped Mitchell for a one-yard loss in the end zone, resulting in a safety to make it 28-15 at halftime.

Freshman running back James Garner's (Eagle Lake, TX/Rice HS) one-yard run early in the third quarter cut the HSU lead to a single touchdown, before the Cowboys stretched their lead on Christian's 17 yard pass to senior Colton Brewer (Eastland, TX/Eastland HS) midway through the third quarter that restored the Cowboys' two touchdown lead. Boatright hit freshman Derrick Bernard (Texas City, TX/Texas City HS) with a 10-yard scoring pass with 5;32 left in the third quarter to make it 35-28, setting up the final sequence that led to the Lobo win.

"We did a good job of piecing things together," said Tyree. "We finally played with some discipline, we had a lot fewer penalties, and the defense played really well in spots. They were running all over us in the first half, but we came back and held them to only 10 points in the second half. We played hard and we played with emotion."

Junior running back Keyon Lee (Hawaiian Gardens, CA/Fullerton College) rushed 16 times for 85 yards for the Lobos, while Boatright had his best day as a starter, completing 22-of-40 passes for 288 yards and five touchdowns,. Mobley caught 12 passes for 164 yards and three scores, while Wilson caught eight passes for 124 yards and a touchdown.

Mitchell led all rushers with 32 carries for 232 yards and two scores. Christian completed 10-of-21 passes for 121 yards and a score, and Garner was eight of 15 for 110 yards and two scores.

Defensively, sophomore Shane Alexander (Brookshire, TX/Blinn CC) made 12 tackles including eight solo stops, with a tackle for lost yardage and an interception. Dorsey made 10 tackles, including three solo stops, had 2.5 tackles for 12 yards of lost yardage, an interception, two sacks, and punted six times for a 34.5 yard average.  Sophomore James Place led HSU defensively with nine tackles, including seven solo stops, and an interception while breaking up two passes.

Sul Ross State improved to 1-7 and 1-3 in the American Southwest Conference with the victory, while Hardin-Simmons dropped to 3-5 and 2-3 in ASC play. The Lobos will visit Howard Payne next Saturday afternoon, while the Cowboys will visit Texas Lutheran.

The Cru played all 80 players in uniform in the game with nine players carrying the ball, three quarterbacks throwing passes and five receivers catching at least one pass. Thirty-two different players posted tackles for UMHB in the win.

The Cru has now won 42 consecutive regular season games and 30 straight ASC contests. UMHB will return to action with a 1:00 PM home game against East Texas Baptist University next Saturday. The Cru can clinch at least a share of the ASC title and claim the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III National Championships with a win over the Tigers.

Mississippi College 41, East Texas Baptist 28
MARSHALL, Texas – The Mississippi College football team kept their American Southwest Conference record perfect at 4-0 with a 41-28 win over East Texas Baptist on Saturday afternoon at Ornelas Stadium.

Junior quarterback Jonathon Redd continued his strong play with 337 yards of total offense and all six touchdowns in the victory. The Mobile, Ala. native threw for 280 yards and four touchdowns, while also rushing for 57 yards and two scores. His four touchdown passes tied a career-high he set last year against Sul Ross State.

After ETBU scored on their opening drive, Redd got the Choctaws (4-4, 4-0 ASC) on the board with a one-yard touchdown run that capped a 14-play, 61-yard drive that took nearly five minutes off the clock. MC ran 88 plays in the game and held onto the ball for nearly 38 of the 60 minutes.

The Tigers (2-6, 0-4 ASC) grabbed the lead with a field goal in the second quarter, but the Choctaws took their first advantage with 4:51 remaining in the first half when Redd found senior Alex Archer for a 13-yard touchdown. Redd went 20-for-35 with the four touchdowns in the game.

MC extended their lead with just 31 seconds remaining in the half when Redd connected with senior Randal Pharr for a 13-yard score to push the score to 21-10 at halftime. It would be Pharr's first touchdown catch of the year and the 11th of his career.

Coming out in the second half, the Tigers got a field goal to cut the game to one score, and Toi Glover rushed in from one-yard out to tie the game, 21-21, after Josh Warbington found John Gable for the two-point conversion. Glover rushed for 115 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.

The Choctaws and the Tigers would trade touchdowns on the next two possessions, and the teams would enter the fourth quarter with the score tied, 28-28. Redd rushed in from 14 yards out, and Tyler Bates caught a five-yard score from Warbington to knot the game.

After each team was held to three-and-outs over their next two possessions, MC hit a big play when Redd found junior Jaime Harris for a 79-yard touchdown pass on the only play of the drive. Harris caught eight passes for 199 yards and a touchdown. The 199 yards receiving is the most in a single-game by a Choctaw receiver since Jake Allen caught 11 passes for 214 yards against ETBU in 2007.

The Choctaws forced a turnover on downs on the next possession for ETBU and took advantage with an eight-play, 46-yard drive that ended with a Redd four-yard touchdown pass to sophomore Zach Favre. Favre finished the game with four catches for 27 yards and the score.

Texas Lutheran 37, Louisiana College 27
SEGUIN, Texas - There will be no return trip to the NCAA Div. III playoffs for the Louisiana College Wildcats. The Texas Lutheran Bulldogs made sure of that in convincing fashion Saturday as they made the case for their own first trip to the playoffs with a 37-27 victory.

The win continued an unbeaten season for TLU (7-0) while the Wildcats dropped their third game of 2013. The Wildcats (5-3) will look to salvage what they can from the rest of the season with final games next Saturday at home against Mississippi College on Senior Day and then on the road to close the season at Hardin-Simmons.

Saturday's game was a matchup of two former foes from the American Southwest Conference. TLU left the ASC following 2012 and is now a member of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference. Because the SCAC has just four teams, the Bulldogs cannot receive an automatic playoff bid – making their matchup with LC all the more important in their quest for an at-large berth.

And the Bulldogs played like a team that knew the importance of the game from the start. On TLU's third possession of the game, quarterback Brent Peavy led his team 57 yards on eight plays – capping things with a four-yard touchdown run. Texas Lutheran led 7-0 with 4:50 left to go in the first quarter.

The Wildcats, however, would respond with their best drive of the first half.  Freshman wide receiver Shedrick Davis made two big plays– the first, a 34 yard reception from fellow freshman, Easton Melancon to the TLU 35. Three plays later, Davis took a reverse handoff nine yards tie the game at 7-7 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Bulldogs started to separate themselves from LC by wearing down the Wildcat defense with longer, sustained drives. An 11-play, 69-yard drive was capped by Peavy's 10-yard pass to Lewis Williams that gave TLU the lead again at 14-7. Peavy would leave the game in the second quarter with an unspecified injury and did not return, but the Bulldogs offense never seemed to miss him.

Backup quarterback Trenton White got the Bulldogs into the end zone one final time before halftime by connecting with Peavy's twin brother, Cameron, for six yards with just 14 seconds left. It took just that one play for the Bulldogs to score after Melancon was intercepted deep in LC territory – a play head coach Dennis Dunn later took responsibility for and a play that the Wildcats would never recover from.

Even so, the LC defense continued its bend-but-don't-break success in the third quarter – yielding only a 26-yard field goal by Tyler Brandenburg. The Cats, meanwhile, finally got going their running game that had been mostly shut down in the first half. Senior running back Ryan Montague capped a 57-yard drive with a 24-yard touchdown run. Adan Olivares' extra point kick was blocked, however, and the Wildcats still trailed by 11, 24-13, heading to the fourth quarter. For Montague, it was career touchdown number 34 and tied him with Jordan Rideaux for the most touchdowns scored in LC Football history.

In the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs seemed to put things away after scoring on successive long drives. Another field goal from Brandenburg and White's second touchdown throw to Cameron Peavy gave Texas Lutheran a 34-13 lead with 7:39 left in the game.

The Wildcats would make a final push. Melancon, who at times struggled in the contest by going 18-for-46 for 296 yards, two touchdowns, and three interceptions, found sophomore Maurice Cooper streaking past the cornerback on the left sideline for a 75-yard touchdown to cut TLU's lead to 34-20 with 6:51. It was the first touchdown for Cooper after missing all of 2012 with a knee injury.

Following the touchdown, the Wildcats attempted an onside kick but could not recover. The short field allowed Texas Lutheran to get their final score – Brandenburg's third field goal from 25 yards to make the score 37-20, Bulldogs, with 3:10 to play.

LC would add one more touchdown – Melancon to sophomore Ladarius Gardner with 2:02 left. The Cats were back to within ten points, 37-27, but could get no closer. Following Melancon's third interception of the game, TLU would run out the remaining time and then celebrate one of their biggest wins in recent history.

Several statistics were telling for the Wildcats. TLU held a substantial edge in time of possession – 35:10 to 23:29 for LC. The Bulldogs also ran 90 total offensive plays to the Wildcats' 73 and held the edge in first downs, 26-16.

Individually, Montague finished with just 16 carries for 81 yards for LC, while leading receiver Kyle Galyon caught just one pass for nine yards. Davis finished as the Wildcats top receiver with seven catches for 120 yards.

The Wildcats defense was led by senior Dominic Graham who had 17 tackles (6 solo and 11 assisted), Daniel Hebert with 11 (7 solo, 4 assisted and one sack), and 10 tackles each for Grayson Pylant and Beau Brewer.
