No. 2/3 Mary Hardin-Baylor 40, Sul Ross State 18
BELTON, Texas— The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor football team struggled through a sluggish first half before pulling away in the second half of a 40-18 victory over Sul Ross State Saturday night in Belton. The Cru improves to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in American Southwest Conference play with the victory. The loss drops the Lobos to 0-4 overall and 0-1 in the ASC on the season.

Freshman K/P Drew Owen gave UMHB a 3-0 lead with a 34-yard field goal to cap the opening drive. Owen added a 44-yard field goal on the next possession to make it 6-0 Cru. Sophomore QB Zach Anderson hit sophomore RB Michael Carpenter with a 45-yard screen pass for a touchdown to put UMHB up 13-0 with 1:39 left in the first quarter. Owen hit a 45-yard field goal with 11:59 left in the second to make it 16-0, but Sul Ross hit for two quick touchdowns to close the gap. Freshman QB Derrick Bernard hit junior WR Cordrick Mobley for a four-yard TD toss with 8:31 left in the second and then scored on a 15-yard run with 2:38 remaining in the half to cut it 16-12 at the break. Those were the first two first half touchdowns allowed by UMHB on the season.

The Cru opened the scoring in the second half when senior DB Brodrick Crain punched the ball loose from Brian Thomas, scooped it up and returned it 15 yards for a score just seven seconds into the third quarter. Bernard hit Xavier Jefferson with a 31-yard scoring strike to pull the Lobos to within 23-18, but Carpenter added a 19-yard scoring run and Owen hit a 30-yard field goal to make it 33-18 at the end of the third. Anderson put an exclamation point on the win with an 81-yard scoring scamper in the fourth quarter and the Cru held on for the victory.

UMHB rolled up 443 yards of total offense with 242 of those coming on the ground. The Cru defense gave up a season-high 353 yards of total offense but forced seven turnovers in the game and scored its first defensive touchdown of the year.

Carpenter ran for a career-high 140 yards on 28 carries as UMHB played without leading rusher senior RB Elijah Hudson. Anderson ran for 121 yards on 15 carries and went 11-16 passing for 160 yards and another score. Junior LB Deshon Kinsey led the Cru defense with 13 tackles and Crain added nine to go with an interception and his fumble return for a touchdown.

Bernard was 19-48 passing for 222 yards and two scores, but he was picked off four times. He also ran for 89 yards on 25 carries. Jefferson caught five passes for 137 yards. Senior DE Dillon Wolfe led the Lobo defense with 12 tackles and three other players also reached double figures.

UMHB has now won 38 consecutive regular season games and 27 straight ASC contests. The Cru will return to action with a non-conference home game against Trinity University next Saturday at 6:00 PM. The Tigers are 3-1 on the year after posting a 26-3 victory over Austin College on Saturday. The all-time series between UMHB and Trinity is tied 4-4, but the Cru has won the last four meetings between the two teams.

Mississippi College 7, Webber International 35
LAKE WALES, Fla. -- The Mississippi College football team intercepted two passes and recovered one fumble, but Webber International came away with a 35-7 victory on Saturday afternoon at Legion Field.

The MC defense was strong in the first half, forcing a missed field goal on Webber's first possession and holding them to a field goal on their second drive as Andy Woythaler nailed a 45-yard shot with 3:03 remaining in the first quarter to give the Warriors a 3-0 lead.

Junior LB Jake Weddle led the Choctaws with 19 tackles, 3.0 tackles for loss and forced fumble on the day. Last season, senior Doc Ward had 19 tackles in a game against Howard Payne. Senior DB Austin Gray and Ward each had 10 tackles in the game for MC. The Choctaws only allowed 289 yards of total offense to the Warriors and forced three turnovers.

On their next drive, Webber went 84 yards in nine plays and capped off the drive with a Zach Day five-yard run to take a 10-0 lead with 12:03 remaining in the first half.  Day rushed for 54 yards on 12 carries in the game.

The MC defense would force two turnovers in the first half as sophomore LB Alexander Greer and freshman DB Reginald Bennett each had interceptions. The Choctaws could not capitalize, however, and went into the half trailing, 10-0.

Freshman Jake Schwartz entered the game at quarterback in the second half after starter sophomore Stacey Dillard left with an injury. On their second drive of the third quarter, MC took advantage of a forced fumble by Weddle and went 33 yards on five plays to cut the lead to 10-7 when Schwartz found junior WR Jaime Harris for a 25-yard touchdown pass.

After the Choctaws cut the lead to three points, the Warriors drove right back down the field, going 62 yards in seven plays and capping off the drive with a four-yard pass from Billy Pavlock to Larry Jackson-Hart.  Jackson-Hart led the team with three catches for 37 yards.

The Choctaws were forced to punt on the next drive, and the Warriors pushed the lead to 20-7 when Woythaler made a 42-yard field goal at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Woythaler was 2-for-3 on field goals with his miss coming from 53 yards.

On the next drive, MC got into Webber territory, but nose guard John Dilks picked off a short pass and ran it back to the Choctaw 24-yard line. Pavlock ran in from seven yards out to extend the lead to 27-7 with 10:16 remaining.

The Warriors put the game away on the next drive when Steven Willis intercepted his second pass of the day and ran it back for a touchdown. Willis led the Warriors with nine tackles and had the two interceptions.

Freshman DL Willie Collard had a big game for MC in his first career start as the punter, averaging 39.7 yards on six kicks.  Collard landed one inside the 20-yard line.

Junior RB Mike Johnson led MC with 59 rushing yards on 11 carries. Schwartz threw for 135 yards and a touchdown in the game. Harris led the receiving corps with six catches for 80 yards and the score.

The Choctaws will be back in action next Saturday when they host Hardin-Simmons at Robinson-Hale Stadium at 2:00 p.m.

East Texas Baptist 25, Willamette 45
MARSHALL, Texas -- It was definitely a case of missed opportunities for the East Texas Baptist University football team on Saturday night, and a 1 ½-hour weather delay made for some tough conditions for both parties.

There were no excuses, and although the numbers were similar yardage wise in both halves, visiting Willamette (3-0) took advantage of five turnovers, and ETBU (2-1) missed several opportunities in the red zone in an eventual 45-25 loss at Ornelas Stadium in the home opener of the Joshua Eargle era.

The teams combined for 185 plays (94 WU, 91 ETBU) and 990 yards of total offense (498 WU, 492 ETBU), but 113 yards worth of penalties and the inability to hold onto the football doomed the Tigers.
Willamette had two 110-yard rushers in Taylor Wyman (18 carries, 117 yards, two touchdowns) and Dylan Jones (18-110-2), while quarterback Josh Dean accounted for 262 yards of total offense.

Toi Glover ran 37 times for 187 yards for the Tigers, but they never found the end zone on the ground.

Brendan Manion led the Bearcats with 14 tackles (2.5 for loss), a sack and an interception.

Jack Nelson finished with 14 tackles (one for loss) and a sack and Corey Walsh added 12 tackles (0.5 for loss). Ja’Kory Hunter led ETBU with 11 tackles (two for loss). Drew Benge finished with nine tackles (1.5 TFL).

Jones opened the second half with a 54-yard touchdown run, and the Tigers responded with a little trickery to get back on the board with receiver Tyler Bates’ 37-yard touchdown pass to D.J. Williams.

Bates was later on his normal receiving end of a 21-yard scoring toss from Warbington, but Dean was equal to the task and showed his senior leadership with a 74-yard touchdown to Derek Traegor.

ETBU twice got to the Williamette 14 on drives but was unable to score points on either occasion, and instead of potentially pulling within single digits, the Tigers trailed 38-18 entering the third quarter.
The Bearcats eventually wore down the ETBU defense, with Wyman scoring the final touchdown on a 6-yard run, and Tiger defensive end Thomas Warren fell on a fumble in the end zone for the final margin.

Starting quarterback Brooks Holder was out with an ankle injury, but Warbington was up to the task.

Warbington threw a 50-yard pass to Roy Butler on ETBU’s opening possession of the game, and Glover found an opening up the middle toward the end zone but was stripped of the ball seven yards downfield by Manion, and the ball was recovered by Jack Nelson to negate the Tigers’ scoring chance.
ETBU received a second opportunity and took advantage, with Warbington completing another third-down pass to Bates for a 43-yard touchdown, but the kicker slipped on the extra-point try for a 6-0 lead.

Williamette took the lead for good behind the strong running of Jones, who had a 14-yard run and another from 23 yards out for a touchdown and 7-6 advantage at the 11:21 mark of the first quarter.

ETBU responded in only two plays with Warbington’s 44-yard pass to Marcus Olearnick, but the receiver was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct, and the touchdown was taken away to stall the drive.

Willamette’s Wyman answered with a pair of runs from 11 and 53 yards out, the latter into the end zone for a touchdown and 14-6 lead, and the Bearcats fell on ETBU’s fumble on the ensuing kickoff.

Kyle Derby’s 24-yard field goal increased the advantage to 11 with 6:54 remaining in the first quarter.

Warbington was stopped at the 1-yard line on a third potential touchdown, and both teams got sloppy. Romeo Botelua recovered Dean’s fumble caused by Benge, but the Tigers simply couldn’t get their offense in check, and a snap over punter Cody Pruitt’s head gave the ball to Willamette.

In a case of turnabout being fair play, ETBU blocked Dean’s punt yet still trailed 17-6 after one. Rashieed Jeffery got his hands on the ball which was fallen on by Aaron Collins, but Williamette continued to stymie the Tiger offense and didn’t even falter after Daniel Esposito’s interception.

Manion picked off a pass of his own, taking Warbington 37 yards the other way for a 24-6 lead.

Botelua was whistled for the Tigers’ third unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the first 30 minutes, and the score remained the same until intermission on Derby’s missed field goal from 29 yards out. Glover already had 100 yards on 20 carries, and Warbington completed six of 13 passes for 151 yards but was sacked four times (five overall).

ETBU shot itself in the foot on several occasions, yet the total offense numbers were similar, with 238 for Willamette and 229 for the Tigers. The difference was the ground game, where the Bearcats had 188 yards in the half on 29 carries to ETBU’s 78 (two yards per carry).

Bates had a productive night, as he also finished with three kickoff returns for 132 yards.

ETBU plays its final non-conference game at 6 p.m. Saturday at home with Texas Lutheran.
