Hardin-Simmons 35, No. 18 Texas Lutheran 27 | Box Score
SEGUIN, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' football team capped an exciting last-minute drive with an 11-yard touchdown pass from Weston Garner to Reese Childress to upset No. 18 Texas Lutheran 35-27 Saturday evening at Bulldog Field in Seguin.
 
The win was the first on the road against a ranked team since a win at Mary Hardin-Baylor in 2004.
 
Texas Lutheran took its first lead since early in the second quarter when Marquis Barrollee scored on a 12-yard run with 5:51 to play to make it 27-26.
 
Garner then drove the Cowboys down the field going 65 yards in 11 plays and killing 5:40 off the clock. The drive was extended when Garner found Garrett Martin on a fourth-down play and Garner was hit late to set the Cowboys up at the nine yard line.
 
The Cowboys tried a couple of runs and then after a timeout hit the freshman Childress on a fade in the end zone and Garner delivered the perfect strike. HSU made the extra point to make it 33-27. HSU added a safety when TLU tried a lateral play at the end of the game.
 
TLU took the first lead when Jekovan Holmes got free over the middle for an 80-yard touchdown in the first quarter. Jessie Ramos answered two plays later with an 81-yard touchdown pass. TLU scored again on a Trenton White pass to J.B. Brown.
 
HSU scored the next three touchdown to make it 26-14. Kerry Sloan scored on a two-yard run, Alex Bell scored on a 31-yard touchdown pass from Ryan Breton and Nick Runkles scored early in the third quarter on a fade from Garner to make it 26-14.
 
TLU scored on a Caleb Oliver 18-yard pass from White with 3:17 to play in the third.
 
HSU had 423 yards of offense in the game and Texas Lutheran managed 509, but turned the ball over four times.
 
Sloan had his sixth straight 100-yard game with 120 yards on 27 carries. Garner was 20-of-28 for 294 yards and three scores and Ramos had 11 catches for a career-best 198 yards.
 
White had 323 yards passing for TLU and Barrolle had 126 yards on 25 carries.
 
Ryne Lewis, Conlan Aguirre and Cory Ward had nine tackles each for the Cowboys. Kylon Mills, James Place and Tyler Ryan each had interceptions for the defense.
 
HSU is 2-0 and will play Wayland Baptist at home next weekend in Abilene. TLU fell to 1-1 on the year.
 
No. 4 Mary Hardin-Baylor 65, Millsaps 12 | Box Score
BELTON, Texas – Mary Hardin-Baylor made the most of its return to the Cru's home field with a 65-12 victory over Millsaps College Saturday evening in Belton. The Cru improves to 2-0 on the season and stretches its regular season winning streak to 56 consecutive games with the win. The Majors drop to 1-1 on the year with the loss.
 
UMHB drove 61 yards in four plays on its opening possession capped by a Zach Anderson to Wykeyhe Walker 37-yard touchdown toss to open the scoring just 2:14 into the game. Jacob O'Neill added a 46-yard field goal on the next drive and Duane Thompson scored on an 11-yard run to give the Cru a 17-0 lead after the first quarter. Blake Jackson threw touchdown passes of six yards to Walker and 12 yards to Lin Gillham and Malcolm Miller rumbled 20 yards for another score as UMHB stretched the lead to 39-0 at the half.
 
Chance Clowers threw a four-yard TD pass to Beau Wells on the opening drive of the second half to cut the Cru lead to 39-6 on the first touchdown surrendered by the UMHB defense in more than seven quarters. The Cru answered with Jackson's three-yard dash and O'Neill's 29-yard field goal to make it 49-6 after three quarters. John Mowery hit a 21-yard field goal and Zane Boles scored on a 37-yard run before Clowers threw a 20-yard scoring pass to Zach Borne. Sterling Scott closed out the scoring when he raced 40 yards for a touchdown in the final seconds to provide the final margin.
 
The Cru rolled up 605 yards of total offense in the game with 363 of those coming on the ground. UMHB turned the ball over just once, but did commit 10 penalties for 121 yards. The Cru defense held the Majors to 38 yards rushing and 153 yards of total offense while forcing two turnovers and posting five sacks.
 
Jackson threw for 116 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 46 yards and another score. Six players ran for 40 or more yards, led by Malcolm Miller with 55. Walker caught five passes for 87 yards and two scores and Gillham and Scott both scored their first varsity touchdowns for UMHB. Matt Cody, John Thorne and Brazos Fuller led a balanced defensive effort with six tackles each and Fuller added two sacks and three tackles for loss.
 
Clowers threw for 104 yards and two touchdowns for Millsaps. Raphael Johnson ran for 36 yards on 14 carries and Borne had three catches for 33 yards. Eric Martin and Jared Bullock had nine tackles apiece to lead the Majors defense.
 
UMHB will continue its four-game home stand with a nonconference game next Saturday against Wisconsin-La Crosse (1-1). Game time is scheduled for a 6:00 p.m. kickoff.
 
East Texas Baptist 56, Texas College 14 | Box Score
TYLER, Texas – Starting out strong from the beginning of the game East Texas Baptist dominated Texas College for its first win of the year, 56-14.
 
Tyler Bates broke the ETBU record for receiving touchdowns in a game with four as the offense came together for 550 yards of total offense.
 
Bates caught five passes for 193 yards and four touchdowns. It was the second-best day in his career for receiving yards and the four touchdowns surpasses Roy Butler (10/23/12), Jason Gray (9/30/06), and Earl Morris (9/18/04) three touchdowns caught in a game. His career-high is 197 yards caught last year and the Texas College game marks the fifth time in his career to have two or more touchdown receptions in a game.
 
The offense looked like the offense ETBU knew from last year finishing with 154 yards rushing and 396 yards passing. Josh Warbington threw for 261 yards and four touchdowns while Taylor Therwhanger had 135 yards passing and one touchdown. Jourdan McNeill finished with 72 yards rushing while Kendall Roberson recorded two touchdowns and 61 yards rushing. The final passing touchdown went to Xavier Gray as he finished with 78 yards receiving.
 
The Tigers played some of their best defense under head coach Joshua Eargle’s tenure. ETBU recorded seven sacks, forced two fumbles, and recorded three interceptions returning one for a touchdown. C.J. Johnson earned the defense’s first touchdown of the year with a 75-yard pick-six in the first quarter. Garrett Gibson led the team with nine tackles while Andre Welch gave seven tackles. Johnson, Zach Biles, and Marcus Harris all had interceptions.
 
ETBU did the majority of their scoring in the first half with 42 points scoring 21 points in each quarter. Bates caught his first of four touchdowns at the 9:16 mark in the first quarter and then at the 3:48 mark Johnson sparked the defense with an interception return for a TD to put the score at 14-0. Just over two minutes later, Warbington connected with Bates on the first play of the drive on a 75-yard touchdown (21-0). Warbington found Bates again at the 11:45 mark in the second quarter from 16-yards our making it three touchdowns in all in the first half.
 
Texas College found the end zone with 5:05 left in the first half but ETBU put 14 points up in less than four minutes for a 42-7 halftime advantage. Roberson danced in from five-yards out with 4:23 remaining and then he dashed in from 23-yards just before halftime with 24 seconds left on the clock.
 
It was not until the third quarter was almost over that Bates broke the single-game receiving touchdowns record with his fourth of the day. He landed a 38-yard catch from Warbington for a touchdown as ETBU continued the dominance, 49-7. Texas College added a score with 5:42 remaining to make it 49-14. Therwhanger and Gray finished off the scoring on a 62-yard pass for a touchdown with 3:37 left in the game.
 
East Texas Baptist travels to Southwestern University next Saturday in Georgetown, Texas, for a nonconference game starting at 7:00 p.m.
 
Wayland Baptist 44, Howard Payne 34 | Box Score
BROWNWOOD, Texas – Six Howard Payne turnovers led to a 44-34 nonconference loss for the Yellow Jackets to Wayland Baptist University Saturday afternoon at Gordon Wood Stadium.
 
Howard Payne put up 576 yards of total offense to just 384 yards for Wayland Baptist. But it was three interceptions and three fumbles lost by the Yellow Jackets that led to 31 points for WBU.
 
Down 44-13 in the third quarter HPU scored three unanswered touchdowns to pull within 10 points at 44-34 with 9:17 to play in the game.
 
A Patrick Hernandez one-yard TD run capped a seven-play, 86-yard drive that made the score 44-20 Wayland Baptist. Then with 12:51 left in the game, Justin Acosta caught a 22-yard pass from Richard Young, shortening the WBU lead to 44-27. Caisson Montieth then hauled in a 19-yard pass from Young, making it 44-34 WBU with 9:17 left to play.
 
On Wayland's next possession, HPU linebacker Jason Disney for forced a Wayland fumble with Austin Williamson recovering for HPU. Jason Disney finished with a game-high 15 tackles with seven solo stops and 1.5 for loss.
 
HPU would drive down to first and goal going for the TD on fourth and one. The Justin Acosta run was stopped and WBU took over on downs with 4:33 remaining in the game.
 
The Jacket defense would force a punt and HPU got another shot to score with 1:26 left to play. HPU drove to the WBU 12 yard line, a Martinez field goal attempt went wide right ending the Jackets’ comeback run.
 
HPU quarterback Richard Young connected on 28-of-54 passes for 376 yards and two touchdowns but had three costly interceptions. Colby Mica had eight catches for 117 yards and Patrick Hernandez had 60 yards on 16 carries and one TD.
 
Jordan Longoria had 11 tackles and two sacks for HPU with Kris Mack adding five tackles and five pass breakups in the Jacket secondary.
 
Wayland QB Bain was 16-of-39 for 239 yards and three touchdowns. Monreal led the Wayland Baptist defense with 14 tackles.
 
Howard Payne now stands at 0-2 overall and Wayland Baptist improves to 2-0 on the year. The Jackets will travel to Waxahachie, Texas next week to play Southwestern Assemblies of God University at 6:00 p.m.
 
Southwestern (Texas) 7, McMurry 6 | Box Score
ABILENE, Texas – Meeting for the first time in football since 1950, McMurry was ambushed by Southwestern, 7-6, at Wilford Moore Stadium. 
 
The War Hawks were held without any offensive score, despite out-gaining the Pirates by 308-164 in total offense. McMurry's lone tally of the evening came on a 17-yard interception return by linebacker Jacob Ferguson at the end of the first quarter. The extra point kicked was blocked, which would eventually come to haunt McMurry by game's end.
 
Southwestern’s lone score came after taking over on downs midway through the second quarter, after McMurry failed on a pass attempt out of punt formation. The Pirates took over on the McMurry 15 yard line and capped the drive in five plays on a three-yard pass from Bryan Hicks to Kenneth Wynn Jr. The deciding extra point made it 7-6 with 3:18 left in the first half.
 
Neither team was able to score in the second half.
 
McMurry running back Paxton Grayer had a career-high 171 yards rushing on 22 attempts, an average of 7.8 yards per carry. Late in the first quarter, Grayer ripped off a 68-yard run before being pushed out at the Southwestern one-yard line. That carry pushed Grayer over 2,000 career rushing yards, becoming the ninth player to rush for 2k in McMurry history.
 
On the next play Grayer fumbled on a first-and-goal and the Pirates recovered to avoid the threat.
 
McMurry quarterback Matthew McHugh completed 16-of-35 passes for 154 yards. He was intercepted once and sacked four times.
 
McHugh connected six times with his twin brother David, for 87 yards. Grayer had six catches for 46 yards. No other War Hawk caught more than one pass.
 
Defensively, in addition to Ferguson's interception, Decorian Johnson also made a nifty interception and return of 25 yards near midfield. However, the McMurry offense went three-and-out and was unable to take advantage of the opportunity.
 
McMurry defensive back Ryan Williams had a team-high 11 tackles, lineman Calvin Middlebrooks had nine tackles including six solo and linebacker Chase Franklin added seven tackles.
 
No. 1 Wisconsin-Whitewater 62, Belhaven 6 | Box Score
JACKSON, Miss. – Belhaven dropped its home opener to No. 1 Wisconsin-Whitewater 62-6 at H.T. Newell Field on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Blazers were only able to gain 187 yards of offense, while the defending national champions compiled 372 offensive yards with 302 coming on the ground.
 
The Blazers lone scoring effort came in the third quarter thanks to a 29-yard catch and run by Jacob McNeill from a pass by quarterback Clayton Webb.
 
Webb finished 20-for-36 for 126 yards with two interceptions and three sacks.
 
Belhaven trailed No. 1 Wisconsin-Whitewater 42-0 at halftime.
 
Nate Williams finished with seven receptions and 47 yards. Marquis Hedge led the offense on the ground with seven carries and 33 yards.
 
On the defensive side of the ball Steven Joiner and Alvin Vaughn finished each with seven tackles in the game.
 
The Blazers will make the short trip to Clinton, Mississippi on Saturday, September 19 to face off against cross-town rival Mississippi College. The match up is scheduled for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
