East Texas Baptist 46, Southwestern (Texas) 37 - Box Score
GEORGETOWN, Texas – Clawing their way all the way to the end of the game the East Texas Baptist sealed a 46-37 win over Southwestern late in the fourth quarter.

Kendall Roberson put the game away on a 31-yard touchdown run with 2:30 left in the game after Southwestern pulled within two. It is the third straight year under Joshua Eargle that ETBU has started 2-1.

ETBU’s defense came up with a big stop at the 2:41 mark when Southwestern attempted a two-point conversion after scoring a touchdown. Hardy Hill intercepted a pass in the end zone on the ensuing two-point conversion to deny Southwestern from tying the game. Just over 10 seconds later Roberson galloped 31-yards for the insurance touchdown giving ETBU their second win in 2015.

Finishing with two interceptions, three sacks, and on fumble recovery the defense continued to grow and mature in week three. Dylan Bowman and Marcus Harris each recorded an interception and Daylon Tarkington led the team in tackling with 10 tackles.

Tyler Bates and Roberson were the highlights on offense once again showing their talent. Bates’ first three catches of the game all were for touchdowns from 24 yards, three yards, and 23 yards. He finished with 66 yards receiving on five catches. Roberson collected a career-high 214 yards rushing and two touchdowns. The 214 yards rushing is the fifth-best in ETBU program history and is the second week in a row for two rushing touchdowns by Roberson. Josh Warbington threw for 208 yards and four touchdowns.

ETBU dominated the first quarter scoring 19 points on three touchdowns to Bates from Warbington. About the time you thought ETBU was going to run away with the game Southwestern shot right back. In the second quarter Southwestern pulled to with 22-14 as ETBU’s only score came on a Ryan Travis 27-yard field goal.

It was the third quarter where Southwestern came charging back taking the lead, 31-29, on a safety at the 6:09 mark. ETBU responded three minutes later on a Chase Sojka 33-yard touchdown reception that put ETBU up for good, 36-31.

At the 11:17 mark in the fourth quarter, Travis hit a 38-yard field goal that gave ETBU a 39-31 lead. His field goal put ETBU ahead by a comfortable eight points. Southwestern did attack and score but was denied the tie after failing on the two-point attempt.

Both teams were even on the board offensively as ETBU had 407 yards of total offense and Southwestern posted 437 yards. The defense came up big stopping Southwestern on fourth downs four of the five times they attempted and also on third downs as they were only 4-of-18.

East Texas Baptist opens up American Southwest Conference play next Saturday as they host Louisiana College at 6:00 p.m.

No. 21 Hardin-Simmons 49, Wayland Baptist 7 - Box Score
ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons won the “West Texas Baptist Bowl” with a 49-7 win over Wayland Baptist on Saturday after at Shelton Stadium.

HSU took control on the opening possession of the game. Wayland Baptist took the opening kickoff but Kylon Mills stuck his head in the first play of the game and forced a fumble. HSU cashed it in for a touchdown four plays later when Weston Garner avoided a rush and found Reese Childress for a seven-yard touchdown pass.

Mills was at it again in the second possession as he picked off a Payson Bain pass. The Cowboys missed a field goal however. HSU forced a quick three-and-out then went 51 yards in eight plays and Garner rushed in from two yards out.

The Cowboys forced a third turnover of the first quarter on the next rive when Tavish Leffall knocked the ball away from V.J. Gomez and Korey Zavala recovered it.

Garner then hit Jessie Ramos on a 42-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-0 in the first quarter.

After Ryne Lewis picked up a sack on a fourth-down try for WBU, HSU took over again and went 51 yards in nine plays and Jeremy Harris capped the drive with an eight-yard touchdown run.

HSU forced another punt and the Cowboys went 61 yards in nine plays and Ryan Breton found Alex Bell for a seven-yard touchdown to make it 35-0 and it stayed that way through halftime.

The Cowboys went up top to Ramos for a 66-yard touchdown pass from Garner on the first play of the second half and that ended the day for the Cowboy offensive starters with a 42-0 lead.

WBU lined up for a 59-yard field goal on the next drive but the snap got away and HSU recorded a tackle for loss at midfield. Breton scored on a two-yard touchdown run and it was 49-0 with 4:59 to play in the third.

WBU scored the only other points in the game on a 69-yard touchdown pass from Bain to Devonte Hayden.

McMurry 40, Texas College 0 - Box Score
TYLER, Texas – McMurry senior running back Paxton Grayer ran for a career-high 216 rushing yards to lead a 40-0 rout over Texas College at Rose Stadium. The win improved the War Hawks to 2-1 on the year, while the Steers fell to 0-3.

It also marked the third time - in as many meetings in the series between the schools – that McMurry has pitched a shutout at TC. McMurry has out-scored the Steers by a 157-0 margin (with the first two meetings taking place in 2010 and 2012).

But it was the powerful running of Grayer – averaging 10.3 yards per carry in the game – which propelled McMurry's win. It marked Grayer's first 200-yard rushing game and was the 10th 100-plus yard rushing game of his McMurry career.  The big game also pushed his career-rushing total to 2,285 yards, moving into the No. 6 spot on McMurry's all-time rushing list and climbing past both No. 7 Sal Andrade (2,084 yards/1970-73) and No. 6 Billy Shelby (2,150 yards/1974, 76-78) during the game.

After misfiring on its first series of the afternoon, the War Hawks hit pay dirt on their second possession. Following a TC punt, McMurry began matters on its own 46 yard line, first-and-ten. A 35-yard run by Grayer, as well as a one-yard gainer, moved the ball to the Steers' 18.

McMurry quarterback Matthew McHugh found Emmanuel Mulumba with a touchdown aerial that capped the 54-yard drive. Joey Silva's extra point kick made it 7-0 with 10:09 left in the first quarter.

The War Hawks' second score of the period came by way of special teams. On fourth-and-12 from its own 45, TC punted the ball away and – after a couple bounces – it was picked up by Charles Agugua at the McMurry five yard line.  After a couple of nifty moves, Agugua found himself in the clear for a 95-yard return for a TD, breaking the previous school record of 90 yards (set by arguably McMurry's greatest football player, Brad Rowland, in 1947).  Silva's PAT made it 14-0 with 7:51 left in the first.

In the waning second of the second quarter, McHugh hit Agugua who made a one-handed grab - that could only be described as "Odell Beckham-esque" - moving the ball from midfield to the TC 26. Orrin Peterman ripped off another 10 yards on a run down to the Steers' 16 yard line. That was followed by an incompletion with six tics left on the clock until intermission.

McMurry head coach Lance Hinson called on the sophomore Silva for the 33-yard field goal try.  Silva, who had already missed on attempt earlier in the game, split the uprights for what was his first field goal made as a War Hawk as the clock hit 00:00, sending his team into the locker room with a 17-0 cushion.

The second half was more dominance by the War Hawks' offense, as Grayer tallied both of his touchdowns in the third quarter on runs of 70 and 4 yards.  In the fourth stanza, Silva nailed his second field goal – this one from 32 yards – and sophomore Caleb Cross caught a 10-yard aerial from reserve QB Cy Ward for his first collegiate touchdown and making it the final 40-0 score.

Three McMurry quarterbacks combined for a 17-31 passing day, good for 174 yards.  McHugh was 12-for-23 (111 yards), Xavier Alexander 2-for-4 (41 yards) and Ward 3-for-3 (22 yards). Agugua caught four balls for 63 yards and Mulumba had three receptions for 55 yards.

For the second straight week, the War Hawks' defense was dominating, as well. Defensive Coordinator Kendall Roberson's unit allowed the Steers to garner just 113 yards of total offense in holding TC scoreless.  TC managed just 10 first downs (three by penalty), averaging just 2.1 yards per play.

McMurry linebacker tandem of Chase Franklin and Marlon Jackson had a big day. Franklin had a team-best nine tackles with 4.0 for losses of 21 yards. Franklin had 2.5 sacks and one quarterback hurry. Jackson added eight total stops.

Defensive back Ryan Williams contributed six tackles and had his team-leading third interception, which he returned 40 yards, as well).

Texas College's quarterbacks likely know exactly what groceries feel like, after having been sacked a total of eight times by McMurry's swarming defense. In addition to Franklin's totals, William Simpson, Jordan Washington, Jamir Bowser, Calvin Middlebrooks and Aston Campbell each had 1.0 sacks, with Andrew Sanchez getting credit for ½ sack.

The War Hawks will play their second-consecutive road game next Saturday (Sept. 26) at Langston College. The game will be played at Douglas High School in Oklahoma City, Okla., with a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.

But the Bulldogs would answer late in the half, taking a 17-14 lead into the locker after running back A.J. Saucedo scored from one-yard out to give TLU the lead with 2:02 left on the clock in the 2nd quarter.

The was as close as LC would get the rest of the way, as the Bulldogs outscored the Wildcats 21-0 in the second half to pull away for the 38-14.

The Wildcats struggled to slow down the run for the second consecutive game, as TLU racked up 300 rushing yards on 53 carries on the night, led by A.J. Saucedo's 133 yards and three touchdowns.

LC junior running back Aurren Cooksey had the best game of his career so far in the blue and orange, running 17 times for 150 yards while freshman linebacker Orel Ledet, Jr. collected a game-high 18 tackles, 12 of which were solo.
