McMurry Wins Second Women's Cross Country Crown

CLARKSVILLE, Ark. – McMurry won the 2021 American Southwest Conference Women's Cross Country Championship, the second championship in program history, at Clarksville High School Saturday. The War Hawks also won the title in 2006.
 
War Hawk sophomore Jazmin Chacon was the individual medalist with a 6,000-meter time of 23:17.2, edging out twin sister Janeth Chacon, the runner-up in 23:28.1. Jazmin Chacon is the fifth runner in McMurry history to win the individual title.

McMurry scored 26 points, placing six runners in the top 12. Last year’s champion Mary Hardin-Baylor was second with 49 points, followed by UT Dallas (82) and East Texas Baptist (90).

For their winning efforts, War Hawk head coach Rexi Parcells and assistant Corey Koch were the Coaching Staff of the Year.
 
Freshman of the Year went to UTD’s Madylin Herrera after she placed third in 24:10.7. McMurry’s Jasmin Mendez was the Newcomer of the Year with a seventh-place finish in 24:42.4. UMHB’s Ana Hernandez was the Sportsmanship Athlete of the Year.

Rounding out All-Conference First Team as part of the top seven individual scorers were – junior Holly Dasher of UMHB (4th, 24:11.0); senior Brittany Acosta of HSU (5th, 24:28.8); and Caitlyn Thrasher from UMHB (6th, 24:39.8). Dasher and Acosta were three-time All-Conference honorees.
