ALPINE, Texas - Barry Derickson officially became the head football coach at Sul Ross State after being named the interim in November of 2021. He previously served as the offensive coordinator for the Lobos. This past season Derickson led Sul Ross State finished 4-6 overall and 4-4 in American Southwest Conference play, the team's best conference mark since 2016.
"First of all, I'm very excited and blessed to be the head guy here. It's a credit to our staff and our players that have worked their tails off in the offseason — without that it wouldn't be possible," said Derickson.
Statistically, the Lobos had a big turnaround. On offense, Sul Ross scored 286 points compared 130 during the fall of 2021. The Lobos ended up having the fourth-best offense in the conference. Six different school records were either shattered or tied on the offensive and defensive sides. Sul Ross also wrapped up the season with a 3-1 record at home, the first winning record at Jackson Field since 2016.
