BELTON, Texas – Mary Hardin-Baylor continued its storied season by winning the 2022 American Southwest Conference Women’s Soccer Championship in a 1-0 result over Hardin-Simmons for the program’s first-ever conference title. UMHB also remains unbeaten with a 17-0-1 record and winners of the past seven matches.
 
The game was scoreless at halftime with a combined nine shot attempts. The Cru had a 6-3 advantage in that span and ended the game ahead 16-8 in that category. It was a goal by Gabby Gibson in the 51st minute that was the difference as UMHB’s defense held onto its 12th shutout of the campaign.
 
Leading the defense for the Cru was tournament Most Valuable Player Kristen Burdick. In addition to her leadership on defense, she had three shots, while the team’s offensive hero Gibson had a game-high four. Ainsley Westlake was in goal for 90 minutes and picked up two saves in the shutout as the Cowgirls were limited to three shots on frame.
 
Hardin-Simmons battled to try to find an equalizer, but like its regular season match, would fall 1-0 in Belton. Haley Foley grabbed six saves for the Cowgirls in goal and kept the difference at one.
 
The Cowgirls saw their 19-year ASC Championship run come to an end. Their record moves to 12-3-2. All-time in the tournament, HSU holds the top spot in wins (49) and winning percentage (.935). The loss is only the second one in 56 matches. That is tied for fewest in the league. HSU was 5-0-1 against UMHB in the ASC Tournament, including 4-0-1 dating back to 2015 with each matchup in the finals.
