McKinney, Nixon, and Avila Take ASC Football Players of the Week

Week 2 goes to McKinney (HPU - Offensive), Nixon (MCM - Defensive), and Avila (UMHB - Special Teams)

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Landon McKinney, QB, So., Howard Payne University
Howard Payne sophomore quarterback Landon McKinney (Liberty City, Texas was 25 of 42 passing for 249 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions. McKinney also ran for 42 yards and two touchdowns. This is McKinney's fourth time to receive the weekly accolade after earning it on three occassions in 2021. 

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Devin Nixon, LB, Sr., McMurry
McMurry senior linebacker Devin Nixon (Vidor, Texas) was the leading tackler for the War Hawks, making 11 tackles with seven solo and four assisted. He also had one quarterback hurry. This is Nixon’s first career Player of the Week honor.

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK – Anthony Avila, K, Sr., Mary Hardin-Baylor
Mary Hardin-Baylor senior kicker Anthony Avila (Troy, Texas) hit a 43-yard field goal against UW-Whitewater and added three point-after kicks. Avila also had five kick offs for 295 yards and two touchbacks. Avila has taken the award four times now in his career.
 
OTHER TOP PERFORMANCES
Offensive
Mary Hardin-Baylor senior wide receiver K.J. Miller (Orange, Texas) caught nine passes for 109 yards against No. 6 UWW. He added 19 yards in returns and was a big part of UMHB's offensive efforts.
 
Southwestern senior wide receiver Ethan Powell (Mason, Texas) was a bright spot for the Pirates in Saturday’s game at Belhaven. Powell recorded five receptions for 103 yards averaging 20 yards a catch.
 
Austin junior wide receiver Colin Mushinksi (Richmond, Texas) rushed for 39 yards for the one score on Saturday for the ‘Roos. It came on a fourth down and sliced the deficit to a touchdown at the time. Mushinski led AC with 61 rushing yards on three carries.

Defensive
Howard Payne sophomore defensive back KC Cornelious (Forney, Texas) anchored a HPU defense that held George Fox to just 76 yards rushing. Cornelious contributed seven tackles with five solo.  
 
Sul Ross State senior linebacker Ronin Williams (Monahans, Texas) led the Lobos defense with 16 tackles, 12 solos and four assisted. He had one sack and two forced turnovers, as the Lobos battled to keep a high potent NCAA Division II offense to nine points in the opening quarter. 

Special Teams
McMurry freshman placekicker Jorge Olivares (Snyder, Texas) posted three of the 13 points for the Warhawks with a field goal in two attempts. He averaged 63 yards on kickoffs.
 
Southwestern sophomore punter Benjamin Lancaster (Gardena, Calif.) did his best to keep the Pirates in the game by flipping the field when the Pirates offense was limited. Lancaster averaged 44 yards, as he amassed seven punts for 309 yards. His longest put of the night was 59 yards.
