ASC Announces 2023-24 Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Teams

DALLAS – Seventeen student-athletes from seven different member universities in the American Southwest Conference highlight the 2023-24 ASC Distinguished Scholar-Athlete Teams, the league office announced Thursday.
 
Sixteen sponsored sports by the ASC have nominations by member schools and affiliates that sponsor a sport with the conference. Nominations and votes are completed by Athletic Directors.
 
The Distinguished Scholar-Athletes of the Year for their respective sport are listed first.  East Texas Baptist Brandon Powell (Men's Track and Field) won a third consecutive time. UT Dallas Graeme Maclean (Men's Cross Country), Hardin-Simmons Cody Harrall (Football), and UT Dallas Rebecca Jackson (Women's Tennis) were recognized a second time in their respective sport.

East Texas Baptist junior baseball pitcher Jagger Neeley has a 4.00 GPA and is a Business Administration major. He is a three-time ASC All-Academic recipient, 2024 CSC Academic All-District winner, three-time ABCA Team Scholar-Award winner, and has made Dean's List. Neeley was 2023 ASC Tournament Most Outstanding Player, three-time All-ASC, has been part of three ETBU teams that won the ASC Regular Season Championship. In 2023, Neeley helped ETBU win its first-ever ASC Championship, Regional Championship, and Super Regional Championship – finishing third overall in the nation. The past two years, Neeley has gone 13-4, which includes a 10-3 record in 2024. He posted 89 strikeouts with a career-high against UT Dallas. Neeley finished second in ASC in strikeouts with wins behind his teammate Sayers Collins. Neeley did Operation Christmas Child and helped local rodeo for children.
 
Hardin-Simmons senior men's basketball forward Austin Brewer has a 4.00 GPA and is a Math major. He led the ASC in rebounding with 246 total and averaged 9.5 per contest. He was second in the ASC in blocks with 36, top-20 ASC in scoring with 14.3 points-per-game. Brewer was All-ASC Second Team, ASC Defensive Team, and a CSC Academic All-District selection.
 
UT Dallas senior men's cross country runner Graeme Maclean has a 3.91 GPA and is a Computer Science major. He was a top finisher for UTD in all five meets he competed in this season. He finished runner-up at the ASC Championships with a 25:38.9 time, earning All-ASC First Team honors for the third time. Maclean ran the second-fastest 8k time in school history in 25:31.6 at the Watson Collegiate Classic. He finished 38th at the NCAA West Regional with a 25:45.2. Maclean was a Scholar-Athlete of Honor recipient.
 
Hardin-Simmons senior football punter Cody Harral has a 4.00 GPA and is a Kinesiology major. was an All-American punter on the field and was a CoSIDA Academic All-American. He is a repeat recipient of for ASC Distinguished Scholar Athlete, as he also won in 2022 for football.
 
LeTourneau sophomore men's golfer Kaiden Schneider has a 3.71 GPA and is a Business Accounting major. He was a 2024 ASC co-Golfer of the Year and All-ASC First Team. He earned CSC Academic All-District, is a two-time ASC Academic All-Conference recipient, and is a two-time All-ASC winner. Schneider led the team in scoring average at 73.21 on the year, while accumulating a team-best six top-10 finishes at or better than par. His low round score of 5-under, 66 at the Alamo City Classic led the YellowJackets. He finished tied for 16th at the ASC Championship Tournament. He was a two-time ASC Golfer of the Week honoree during the season and opened the season with medalist honors at the Tempest Intercollegiate with a 7-under, 209 in the 54-hole tournament.
 
Mary Hardin-Baylor sophomore men's soccer forward Alex Bethke has a 3.90 GPA and is a Business major. He was a USC All-Region X and CSC Academic All-District selection. He also earned All-ASC First Team this season. Bethke led the conference with 12 shots on frame during ASC play. Bethke started in all 16 matches with 931 minutes played. He put 16 total shots on frame with five goals and two assists. Bethke also scored game-winners against both Austin and Hardin-Simmons.
 
Concordia Texas graduate student men's tennis player Joshua Bode boasts a 4.0 GPA and is completing his MBA. He was selected to compete in the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles National Tournament for consecutive years. This year he reached the quarterfinals, which is the furthest by an athlete from the ASC. Finishing the season ranked 21st in the nation, Bode capped off the 2024 spring season with a 20-3 singles record. He was also an ITA Cup quarterfinalist in the fall, helped the Tornados win their second-straight ASC Championship, and earned ASC West Division MVP, ASC Tournament MVP, ASC All-Conference, and ASC West Division First Team.
 
East Texas Baptist graduate student men's track and field athlete Brandon Powell has a 3.97 GPA and worked on his MBA this year. Powell is a two-time ASC Distinguished Award Winner, two-time CSC Academic All-District, three-time ASC All-Academic, named multiple times on President's List, and Dean's List. Powell is a member of Chi Alpha Sigma Award, and holds highest GPA on team past three years. Powell is a three-time NCAA Qualifier in three events. He is an All-American Second Team in 2024 with the 4100 and 4x400 meter relays. Powell is a two-time Indoor/three-time Outdoor All-Region. He was All-Region in 4x400 meter, long jump, and high jump. Competed in 2024 nationals in high jump, 100-meter dash, 4x100m relays, and 4x400m relays. He was the 2023 ASC Most Outstanding Athlete. He earned All-ASC in six events over his career, has three ETBU records. He works with Operation Christmas Child, is an FCA leader on campus, and worked at a conference at Ministry GFA Word.
 
Hardin-Simmons senior women's basketball guard Paris Kiser has a 4.00 GPA and is a Business major. She averaged 19.1 points-per-game and helped the Cowgirls to the 2024 ASC Regular Season Championship, ASC Women's Basketball Championship, and a Sweet 16 appearance in NCAA Division III Championship Tournament. Kister was named ASC Player of the Year, National Player of the Week, ASC All-Tournament, WBCA Division III All-Star, D3hoops Region 10 Player of the Year, WBCA All-American, D3Hoops.com All-American, Non-DI All-Texas Team, and CSC Academic All-American.
 
Hardin-Simmons junior women's cross country runner Kylah Holland has a 4.00 GPA and is a Kinesiology, Sport, and Recreation major. She won the ASC Championship with a record-setting 22:06 in the 6k. She was All-ASC First Team, finished 10th at NCAA Regional and qualified for NCAA Championship for second time in career.
 
Mary Hardin-Baylor senior women's golfer Sarah Kmiecik has a 4.00 GPA and is a Marketing major. She was a WGCA Second Team All-America selection this season. She was also a WGCA All-Region Selection and First Team All-ASC honoree. Additionally, Kmiecik earned an individual bid to the NCAA Division III Women's Golf National Championship, where she finished tied for 17th overall. She competed in 10 tournaments this season with two individual wins. Kmiecik finished second in three other tournaments, including the ASC Championship. She shot five rounds of par or better with a season-low 69 (-3).
 
Mary Hardin-Baylor senior women's soccer forward Kelsey White graduated with a perfect 4.00 GPA as a pre-dental student and earned a perfect 4.0 in her first semester of graduate school. White was named Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-ASC after starting in all 19 games this season. White recorded three goals with game-winners against Ohio Northern and Sul Ross State. She added three assists and seven shots on goal. White was also named on the USC All-Region and All-America teams. Making her the first student-athlete in program history to earn All-America and CSC Academic All-America distinctions in the same season. She was also a CSC Academic All-District selection.
 
East Texas Baptist junior softball outfielder Mary Frances Ellis has a 4.00 GPA and is a Finance/Accounting major. She is a two-time CSC Academic All-American, two-time CSC Academic All-District, three-time ASC All-Academic, and three-time NFCA Scholar-Athlete. Frances Ellis is a three-time All-ASC selection, two-time NFCA All-Region, and was on the NFCA National Players to Watch List in 2023. She is a two-time ASC Tournament Champion and three-time NCAA Tournament participant. Impacted the 2024 NCAA Division III Championship Tigers that finished 48-3. Frances Ellis was Super Regional Most Outstanding Player, on the NCAA Regional All-Tournament Team, and was All-ASC First Team this season. She finished batting .409 with 47 hits, 10 RBI, eight strikeouts in 115 abs, and stole 36 bases.
 
Hardin-Simmons junior women's tennis player Laurel Coleman has a 3.35 GPA and is a Chemistry major. She played ace singles for Cowgirls all year and went 8-10. She was named All-ASC West Division Second Team for flight one singles. She was named All-ASC West for third time in her career.
 
East Texas Baptist sophomore women's track and field athlete Neelie Schiel has a 4.00 GPA and is a Business Administration major. She was a two-time ASC All-Academic, CSC Academic All-District, two-time ASC Champion in Javelin, two-time All-Region, and 2024 All-American Second Team. Schiel finished 11th at 2023 and 2024 NCAA Division III Championships. Schiel ranked fourth in West Region in javelin and finished fourth at ASC Championships in 400-meter hurdles. In 2023, Schiel was a freshman and named the ASC Most Outstanding Field Athlete and helped ETBU to best finish in program history of third that season.
 
McMurry freshman women's track and field athlete Aerial Rangel has a 4.00 GPA and is a Pre-Nursing major. She competed in eight competitions during her collegiate debut season and appeared in seven different events. Her top marks were in the 60 meters (8.68), 100 meter-dash (13.48), 200 meter-dash (27.52), 300 meter (45.26), 400 meter (1:02.89), long jump (4.29m), and was part of 4x400 meter relay. Part of a War Hawks team that won their 16th ASC Championship.
 
Mary Hardin-Baylor senior volleyball outside hitter Hannah Frasca has a 3.71 GPA and is a Nursing major. She was named CSC Academic All-District team, AVCA All-Region, ASC Co-Most Valuable Player and All-ASC First Team. Frasca ranked second in the conference with 3.2 kills per set and third with 330 total points scored. She hit the fifth-most kills in the conference with 281, adding 13 assists and 21 service aces. Frasca added 394 digs on the season, ranking seventh with 3.44 digs per set. She added 32 blocks with 15 double doubles on the year.
