BROWNWOOD – June 23, 2025 – Howard Payne University announced the hiring of Adam Bright as the new director of athletics. Bright brings almost 20 years of leadership experience to the role with a background in athletic administration, coaching and business. He will begin the new role on July 14. The public and media outlets are invited to a press conference with Bright on Wednesday, June 25 at 2 p.m. in the Bullion Suites of the Mabee University Center.

"We are thrilled to welcome Adam Bright to this vital leadership position at HPU," said Dr. Cory Hines, university president. "Adam has a heart to serve, lead and inspire student-athletes toward excellence in all areas of their lives. He brings a wealth of experience and passion and I look forward to seeing how God uses him to lead our athletics endeavors."

Bright joins the HPU staff after serving as associate athletic director at D-I Sam Houston State University. During his time there, he oversaw brand management, sports information, broadcasting as well as brought a new energy to the fan-facing engagement for the university. He previously served as athletic director at high schools in Buena Vista, Durango and Granby, Colorado, as well as assistant commissioner for Colorado High School Activities Association in Aurora, Colorado. Bright also worked in nearby Winters ISD.

His leadership has produced measurable success through multi-million-dollar transactions, successful marketing campaigns, professional development, community engagement and student involvement.

"I am deeply honored to accept the role of Athletic Director at Howard Payne University and would like to thank Dr. Hines and Dr. Penland for their leadership and this incredible opportunity to serve HPU," said Bright. "This is a special place with a rich tradition of faith, excellence, and service. I look forward to serving our student-athletes and coaches in pursuit of competitive success, academic achievement and spiritual growth. Together, we will build champions in competition, in the classroom, and for Christ and create an environment where Yellow Jacket pride runs deep."

Bright also has business experience with minor and major league baseball teams. He worked as director of corporate sales for West Tenn Diamond Jaxx, a Double A minor league baseball team; as general manager of Greenville Bluesmen Baseball, LLC, Single A minor league baseball team; and in corporate sponsorships for Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

"I am excited to have Adam Bright come to Howard Payne University to lead our Athletic Department," said Dr. Nate Penland, vice president for student experience. "He is a proven leader with a deep passion for investing in students and creating a first-class student-athlete experience, both on and off the field. I am confident he and his family will be a great fit for HPU and our local community."

He attended Baylor University and holds a master's degree in athletic administration from Concordia University Irvine. He and his wife, Jessica, a graduate of nearby Abilene Christian University, have a son who will be entering third grade in the fall. The Brights have deep family roots in central and west Texas.

In this new role, Bright looks forward to energizing relationships with Howard Payne alumni and building lasting bridges with the people and businesses of West Central Texas.

"We will work tirelessly to become leaders in the American Southwest Conference and NCAA Division III and foster strong connections with our proud alumni and the West Central Texas community to become active partners in our mission," Bright said. "Our athletic programs can be a powerful platform for unity, inspiration and regional pride."

"This athletic department doesn't just belong to the campus—it belongs to the generations of Yellow Jackets who came before us and the communities who support us," he continued. "I'm excited to create opportunities for meaningful involvement, shared success, and an athletic experience that reflects the best of HPU. Our best days are right in front of us - Sting 'em!"
