Coach
Bill Mueller begins his second season as the head
baseball coach at the University of the Ozarks. Playing a
non-conference schedule made up largely of NCAA Division II
schools, Mueller's first Eagles team finished 8-27, but finished
strong by winning eight of its last 19 games.
A former All-Big Ten catcher for Indiana University, Mueller held numberos shcool records, including career and season marks for home runs, hits, RBI, total bases, extra base hits and games played. He played in hte St. Louis Cardinals' organization in the mid 1980s before returning to Indiana where he served as an assistant coach for th Hoosiers from 1994-97. While an assistant coach at Indiana, he had eight players drafted professionally and also coached 12 Academic All-Big Tenstudent-athletes. (top of page)
The Eagles return six starters from a team that rebounded from an 0-16 start to finish 7-12 in the ASC last year. Leading the returnees are a trio of sophomore infielders: first baseman Rusty Gregory (.343, 19 RBI), third baseman Patrick Prater (.333, 16 RBI) and second baseman Chance Lawless (.265, 15 RBI). The outfielders include three-year starter Lee Beshoner (.277) in left and returning starter Kevin Duncan (.222, 2 HRs) in center.
The newcomers who are expected to make the biggest impact are catchers Alan Garrison and Jermiah Woehl, infielders Ca'Lyn Zachery and Chad Tate, and outfielders Mark King and Shawn Adams.
The Eagles' pitching staff will be led by the team's lone senior, right-hander Bo Funderburk (1-4 in nine starts), Prater (2-3, 9.99 ERA) and 6-4 freshman Andy Tasker. (top of page)
