Donald Randell

Coach
A native of New Caney, Texas, Donnie Randell is
beginning his fifth season as head coach of the Sul Ross State
University Lobos. Randell entered the season with a 90-71
won-lost record, including leading Sul Ross to the 1996
conference title. His team competed in the conference tournament
from 1995-97, with regional playoff bids in 1995, 1997 and 1998.
Randell is assisted by Zivan Snively, a Sul Ross grad and the
team's 1996 MVP.
Randell attended Angelina Junior College, then
graduated from the University of Houston in 1983. He received a
teachers certificate from Sam Houston State University in 1984
and a master's in education from Sul Ross in 1993. He was an
All-SWC tourney selection at the University of Houston in 1979
and was named all-conference at Angelina JC in 1976-77.

Off to a 7-1 start, the Lobos are well on their way to improving on their 1998 mark of 18-23. Sul Ross batted .332 as a team last year, and returns many of their most potent offensive weapons, including catcher Mario Porras (.399, 16 home runs), first baseman Brent Booze (.392), second baseman Andy Mata (.343) and pitcher/shortstop Scott Kubosh, the team's leading pitcher with a 5-1 record and 3.08 earned run average.
The addition of a number of outstanding pitching prospects, including Rene Munoz, Matt McBrayer, Chris Tobola, Patrick Hanlon, and the return of lefthander Jason Alvarado, who missed 1998 with an injury, give the Lobos solid mound support of the batting order.(top of page)
