Chris Oestrich
Men's
Basketball Coach
During his three years at the helm of the Austin College mens basketball program, Chris Oestreich has helped bring the Kangaroo program to a new level excellence.
Entering his fourth season in Sherman, Oestreich has already produced a conference title in 1996-97 (ACs first since 1980), several All-Conference performers and on a personal level, his coaching excellence has been recognized by his peers with two Conference Coach of the Year selections.
A standout player at his alma mater, St. Marys of the Plains (B.A. 1988). Oestreich came to Sherman and his first intercollegiate head coaching position from Cornell College in Iowa where he served as an assistant coach in 1994-95. Prior to his time at Cornell (IA), Chris was an assistant coach at Rockhurst College in Kansas City for three seasons while working on his Masters Degree at the University of Missouri-Kansas City, which he earned in 1994.
Along with his basketball coaching duties, Oestreich holds the rank of Assistant Professor at Austin College.
In his three seasons at Austin College, he has a 38-38 overall record.
Chris and his wife, Valerie, have two children, a son, Spencer-age 10, and a daughter Logan, who will turn one just prior to the start of the 1998-99 season. (top of page)
Coming off two straight 16-win seasons, the 1998-99 Austin College mens basketball team will be looking for its third consecutive winning season and to make a run at the American Southwest Conference East Division championship and conference title.
Leading the 98-99 Kangaroos will be the teams only senior, 6-2 guard Christian Morgia, who earned Second Team All-American Southwest Conference honors in 1997-98, and this season has been selected as the ASCs preseason East Division Player of the Year. Last year, Morgia led the Kangaroos in scoring for the season averaging 20.0 points per game, rebounding, averaging 5.6 boards per game and assists with 151. His 151 assists put him 17th in the nation in assists per game average at 6.1. For a guard, Christian had a phenomenal season shooting the ball as he hit 56.9 percent of his field goal attempts (199 of 350). In 1997-98, Christian also became the twelfth player in school history to surpass the 1,000 career point mark. He enters this season with 1,323 career points which puts him approximately 300 points shy of passing Brian Ainsworth and becoming Austin Colleges all-time leading scorer with over 1,600 points.
Sophomore guards Matt Lucero and Danny Decker will be a key to this years team as they must help pick up the scoring void left by the graduation of three-point specialist Mark Kellogg. Lucero, who figures to be this years point guard, was second on the team in assists with 137 last year, and he averaged 3.4 points per game. Decker, an outstanding defensive player, also averaged 3.4 points per game, and he shot 58.1 percent from the floor.
Rounding out the returning members of the Austin College backcourt are juniors Jeremy Armstrong, who saw action in 19 games last season, and Denver Plachy, who will rejoin the team at mid-semester after spending the Fall in Spain.
The Kangaroo frontcourt should provide some match-up problems for this years opposition, as seven players listed on the AC roster as forwards and centera are 6-4 or taller, and four of those seven are 6-6 or taller. 6-4, junior forward Josh Oerke returns following a fine 1997-98 season in which he averaged 7.5 points and 5.4 rebounds per game.
Back at the center position for the Roos are 6-8, junior Philip Newton and 6-9 classmate Andrew Thompson. Newton averaged 5.8 points and 4.0 rebounds per game last year, and he led the team in blocked shots with 20. Thompson, who started 13 games in 97-98, averaged 2.4 boards and 1.9 points per game last year.
A welcome addition in the post for head coach Chris Oestreich this year is the return of 6-8 junior Jared Grabow, who spent last year at Millsaps College. During his freshman year at Austin College, Jared averaged 11.4 points and 5.5 rebounds per game.
A solid group of seven freshman make-up the Austin College mens basketball Class of 2002. Newcomers in the AC backcourt are 5-10 Chris Bordelon, 6-2 Wes Guinn, 5-9 Rusty Hicks and 6-5 Jeff Sterna. Three freshmen will play in the AC frontcourt, 6-5 Jon Filipski, 6-6 Charles Sass and 6-4 Chris Siebenhausen. (top of page)

Robin Potera
Women's
Basketball Coach
Head coach Robin Potera has helped lift the Austin College womens basketball program to new heights. Entering her fifth season in Sherman in 1998-99, Potera has guided the Lady Kangaroos to a 45-11 overall record (an impressive 80.4 winning percentage) over the last two seasons, and her teams have reached the Round of 16 in two different national championship tournaments, the NCAA Division III National Championship Tournament in 1998 and the NAIA Division II National Championship in 1997. Along with trips to the national tournaments, her Austin College women have also won a share of the American Southwest Conference titles in the last two seasons, their first-ever conference championships in the history of the program.
Last season, Austin College posted a 21-7 overall record, and in 1996-97, the Lady Roos posted a record-setting 24-4 mark. An excellent recruiter and game coach, Potera arrived at AC from Wilmer-Hutchins High School in Dallas where she served as head coach from 1998-1993. At W-H, she coached three district championship teams and twice received Coach of the Year honors. Along with the time at Wilmer-Hutchins, she also has high school coaching experience at Nimitz High in Irving, Texas. Her high school coaching record is an impressive 131-50 which works out to a 72.4 winning percentage.
Coach Poteras previous intercollegiate coaching
experience includes a stint as a graduate assistant at Stephen F.
Austin in 1984-85. Robin received her B.A. from Evangel College
in 1984 and her M.A. from Stephen F. Austin in 1985. Along with
her basketball coaching duties, Potera holds the rank of
Associate Professor of Physical Education at Austin College.

Its been said that the third times a charm, and thats what the Austin College womens basketball team will be looking for during the 1998-99 season, a third straight American Southwest Conference title (AC has shared the conference crown the past two seasons) and a third straight trip to post season play.
Over the past two seasons, the Austin College Womens Basketball Program has posted an impressive 80.4 winning percentage (45-11), and the team has reached the Round of 16 in two different national tournaments, the NAIA Division II Womens National championship in 1997 and last season, the NCAA Division III Womens Basketball National Championship.
Three starters and eight letterwinners are back from last years team that went 21-7 overall and 9-3 in American Southwest Conference play. The Lady Roos won two NCAA playoff games last year, defeating Southwestern University at home 69-51, winning at Randolph-Macon, 64-52, before falling to the nations number one-ranked team at the time, UW-Oshkosh, 57-44, in the "Sweet 16".
Second Team All-American Southwest Conference selection Marisa Hesse is back to help lead the AC backcourt. Marisa was second on the team in scoring last season averaging 15.9 points per game, and she hit a team leading 75 three-point shots. Entering her senior season, Hesse is already the all-time leading scorer in womens basketball history at Austin College with 1,327 career points. She has averaged 16.4 points per game through her career at AC, and Marisa surpassed the 1,000 point plateau on December 13, 1997 versus a Division I opponent, the University of North Texas.
Senior post player Natasha Rodgers, who was an Honorable Mention All-Conference selection last year, returns looking to become the first player in womens basketball history at Austin College to surpass the 1,000 points and rebounds mark for her career. Rodgers became the second player in AC history to surpass the 1,000 career point mark on February 19, 1998 when she scored 16 points in an 81-67 win at Mississippi College. She enters this season with 1,074 career points and she is only 177 rebounds shy of the 1,000 mark. Last year, Natasha averaged a double-double scoring 13.1 points and grabbing 10.2 rebounds per game.
Senior guard/forward Allison McKinney, who started 24 games last season, returns to the AC line-up. McKinney led the team in assists last season with 104, and she averaged 5.4 points and 2.6 rebounds per game. Allison is also an excellent defensive player, as she made 47 steals last year.
Senior post players Kelly Killgo and Polly Thomason are back to battle for playing time in the paint and to add quality depth to the Austin College frontcourt. Junior point guard Riann Emch, who played in all 28 games last season averaging nearly 11 minutes per contest, is back after a season in which she dished out 56 assists with only 27 turnovers. Rounding out the returning players from last season are sophomores 6-1 post Sarah Birge and 5-10 forward Amanda Smith. Head coach Robin Potera has brought another outstanding recruiting class to campus this year, as eight new players will don Austin College crimson and gold this season. Two of the eight newcomers are junior college transfers in 6-0 post Rachel McNamara and 5-8 guard Whitney Brant. Freshmen additions to the AC guard corps are 5-3 Kat Dunikoski, 5-7 Natasha Lampkin 5-7 Melody Smith and 5-9 Catherine Weir. Freshmen forwards and post players are 5-10 Schavaun Andrews and 6-1 Jennifer Bley. (top of page)
