Bill Raleigh
Men's
Basketball Coach
Head Coach Bill Raleigh is entering his third season
with the University of Dallas Crusaders. Initially hired by the
University to run the mens basketball program, Raleigh has
also been handed additional responsibilities as head golf coach.
Raleigh first came to Dallas in May 1996, after working on the Division III level as an assistant coach for a number of years. In 1995, he was on staff with Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Virginia, where he executed all aspects of recruiting, assisted with game-day preparations and coordinated the weight and conditioning program for his student athletes. Prior to his employment at Randolph-Macon, Raleigh was an assistant basketball coach for three years at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. In addition to his basketball duties, he was also head mens golf coach at W & L.
In addition to his coaching experience, Raleigh has been on staff with the Five Star Basketball Camp and Eastern Invitational Basketball Camp. He was a Physical Education instructor while at Washington & Lee, and was the Drug Testing Coordinator at Randolph-Macon College.
Before moving to the collegiate level, Raleigh was an assistant coach at Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, New Jersey, specializing in the development of the forwards and centers.
In 1988, Raleigh graduated from Muhlenberg College with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration. Four years later, he received his Juris Doctor Degree from Seton Hall Universitys School of Law; and in June 1992, he became a member of the Pennsylvania State Bar.
A native of Colts Neck, New Jersey, Raleigh was a starter for Christian Brothers Academys 1984 Parochial A State Championship Team which went 29-1. He played basketball at Muhlenberg College for a short time before an ankle injury ended his collegiate career.
Coach Bill Raleigh is married and currently resides in Flower Mound with his wife Maureen. (top of page)
The University of Dallas mens basketball team is entering the 1998-99 season with true optimism. After finishing last season with a 7-18 overall record, the Crusaders, still a very young squad, are intent on continuing their upward climb. Dallas struggled with inexperience throughout most of last season, but made great strides in maturity towards the end of the year, managing to win three of its last four games. Although the Crusaders are picked to finish just fifth this season in the ASC East Division, third year head coach Bill Raleigh hopes to continue the move towards being a legitimate competitor in the American Southwest Conference race.
"We had trouble finishing some of the close games last year," he explains, "but we had a lot of freshman on the squad who picked up some good experience. That alone should really help us this year."
Regardless of the fact that the team is still very young and offers no senior leadership, Raleigh feels comfortable with the maturity and amount of collegiate experience the team possesses. Dallas returns nine players from last years team, including three starters and two red-shirts, and has added three newcomers to the roster.
Four returning sophomores, George Schneller, Grant Garnett, Bill Abide and Jarred Samples, will most likely fill starting positions for the Crusaders, with the fifth spot being filled by junior Will Richey. Schneller, the 64" forward/center, will shoulder most of the burden for Dallas and according to Raleigh, "should be an All-Conference caliber player this season." He led the Crusaders in scoring as a freshman, averaging 13 points per game, was second on the team in rebounding, and has the potential to develop into one of the best all-around players in the league.
Garnett, a 511" guard, returns to the court after a very good freshman season with the Crusaders. One of Dallas starting five, he was a major contributor to the offense, averaging just under 10 points, and is expected to increase his scoring and ball handling this year. Samples, a steady influence as a back up guard during his freshman year, is expected to lead the team at the point position, while Abide, who came on strong at the end of last season, has improved his all-around court game and should become an impact player for Dallas.
Will Richey, one of three returning juniors in the group, has developed into a solid player since his freshman year. After spending the 98 season as a red-shirt, Richey is expected to stiffen Dallas scoring punch. Juniors Kenny Marrs and Sean Gaffney will offer valuable contributions as the teams only upperclassmen.
Bringing depth to the inside game are sophomores David Brown and Chris Shiller. Brown, an extremely hard worker, saw playing time in over half of the games last season, while Shiller is a new addition to the group. At 67", Shiller adds a much-needed height to the program and maintains a good touch around the basket.
Newcomers to the Dallas squad include freshmen Ben DeMiranda and John Klocek, both of whom should gain quality playing time this season. DeMiranda, in particular, is a very versatile player and should be one of the top contributors off the bench. A strong shooter, he will add depth at the wing position. Klocek, on the other hand, will add depth to the backcourt. He maintains a strong work ethic and should prove to be a valuable addition in the future.
Lastly, sophomore Luke Speier, who is currently attending the Universitys Rome campus, is expected to make a strong impact when he returns from Europe. After a successful freshman season, look for Speiers tough play to give the Crusaders a lift when conference competition heats up in January.
With the combination of solid returnees and new talent, the outlook for the Crusaders continues to look positive. "If this team continues to develop and improve," says Raleigh, "we can legitimately be a factor in the ASC race." (top of page)

Julie Felderhoff
Women's
Basketball Coach
Julie Felderhoff, one of three
first-year head coaches at the University of Dallas this year,
brings a solid work ethic and renewed enthusiasm to the
womens basketball program. During the 1997-98 season,
Felderhoff worked as an assistant under former head coach
Rachelle Leonard, and was offered the position of head
womens basketball coach after Leonards resignation in
the spring of 1998.
Prior to her employment with the University of Dallas, Felderhoff had quite an extensive and successful career at UD as a member of the Lady Crusader womens basketball and soccer teams. One of the institutions most promising student-athletes, she achieved honors both on the court and in the classroom.
Felderhoff was a four-year letterwinner in basketball and a three-year letterwinner in soccer, earning post-season recognition in both sports. A six-time Deans List student, she currently holds the schools basketball record for most games played in a career (88), and was named as the soccer teams Most Valuable Player. In addition, she was the recipient of ASC All-Conference and Academic All-Conference honors, was a two-time GTE Academic All-American nomination and was selected to the 1997 GTE Academic All-America District VI Team for soccer.
Aside from coaching at UD, Felderhoff has worked numerous youth basketball camps in the area, including the SMU Basketball Camp, Baylor University Basketball Camp and the Nancy Liebermann-Cline Camp, among others.
She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in History from the University of Dallas in 1997, earning her teaching certification in secondary education, and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa, an academic honor society. Upon graduation, Felderhoff was awarded a Post-Graduate Scholarship by the NCAA and is pursuing a Masters Degree in Sports Administration at Texas Womens University.
A native of Muenster, Texas, Felderhoff attended Sacred Heart High, where she played four seasons of basketball under Coach Jon LeBrasseur and was selected to the TAPPS All-Star and All-State teams as a senior. She currently resides in Irving. (top of page)
The University of Dallas Lady Crusaders are sporting a new look for the 1998-99 season. With a new coach at the helm, new uniforms, and a host of new freshman athletes, the Dallas womens basketball program hopes to finally start taking the steps towards building a successful program.
First year head coach Julie Felderhoff enters the 1998-99 season as the Universitys third new coach in as many years. A 1997 graduate of the University of Dallas, Felderhoff was a womens assistant under former and now University of Texas at Dallas head coach, Rachelle Leonard, who led the Lady Crusaders to a 6-19 finish last season.
Excited about her new role in the upcoming season, Felderhoff realizes that she has much to learn about the game from the coaching perspective.
"Ive played basketball my whole life," Felderhoff explains, "and have had a lot of different coaches. I should be able to apply some of the things Ive learned from them, and develop my own personal coaching strategies."
In terms of goals for the season, Felderhoff and the Lady Crusaders are looking to make gradual improvements in the program at Dallas and realize that the changes wont happen overnight. "Winning," she says, "is not necessarily a goal in itself, but an end result." If the Lady Crusaders can continue to make improvements on the fundamental level, Felderhoff knows that the wins will come.
One of the key ingredients in the success of the Lady Crusaders will be the performance of its lone returning starter Delilah Whisenhunt. The 5-4 junior from Fort Worth led both the team, and the American Southwest Conference in scoring during the 1997-98 season, averaging over 18.5 points per game. After her return from Rome, Italy, in January 1998, Whisenhunt made a huge difference in the Dallas offense and finished the season as the teams top scorer in 11 of the 16 games she played during the year. She was a second team All-Conference selection in 1998, was ranked first in the league in three-point field goals made per game, and was ranked in the top five in both steals and free throw percentage.
As a complement to Whisenhunt, Felderhoff has added a solid core of freshmen to the roster, all of which bring talent and a tough mental attitude to the program. At guard, Houston native Alese McKinstry is expected to be one of the top contributors to the team. McKinstry has a good knowledge of the game and is a strong all-around athlete. Forward Stephanie Meier (Greenfield, WI), has "a quiet game," according to Felderhoff, but should make a solid impact in her first season with the Lady Crusaders.
In the middle for Dallas, look for freshmen Amanda Lemon (New Deal, TX) and Julie Hendricks (Kress, TX) to share the starting roles in the post position. At 510", Lemon brings a much needed height to the Dallas inside game and possesses good moves in the paint, while Hendricks, who is very strong for her size, is one of Dallas most consistent defensive players.
Filling out the Dallas backcourt will be freshmen guards Ann-Marie Ryan (Napa, CA) and Melissa Taylor (Campbell, CA), sophomore guard Kendra Galbraith (Houston, TX), and first-time Lady Crusaders junior Elisa Lopez (Harlingen, TX) and sophomore Sara Franklin (Arlington, TX). Ryans speed and rebounding are her best attributes, while Taylors ball handling skills are impressive for the 59" freshman that was also a member of the UD volleyball team. Lopez is one of only two upperclassmen and offers maturity and leadership to the squad, while Galbraith, the teams only other returning letterwinner, should be a welcomed addition when she returns from Rome in the spring.
Still wet behind the ears, the 1998 Lady Crusaders begin a season, which at this point, still remains unpredictable. Picked to finish sixth in the ASC East Division pre-season poll, the success of this young team will depend not only on the development of the freshman talent, but also on the stability and focus of its new young coach.
