Goals for 1998-99: Show improvement with each game and challenge
in conference. (top
of page)
With the excellent improvement displayed by the East Texas Baptist University team in the second half of last season, the Tigers appear to be another shot of what seems to be, one of promise, optimism and a touch of the unknown.
The leadership will be in the hands of three seniors: Jeff Tuttle, Jason Cooley, and Adrien Kenebrew. They will head a Tiger lineup small in size but ready for the challenge. They will be conditioned to force an up tempo game, designed to take the big man out of their opponents' game. The Tigers have a variety of players with offensive and defensive talents, which must be developed to best blend with coach Hand's style of play. A successful season will hinge on how well the team defends due to their lack of size. This will be a fun team to watch enthusiasm is already running high in workouts.
With the addition to what Hand believes in a more talented squad than last season's, plus a move to the American Southwest Conference, the Tigers are ready to see what the 1998-99 season holds in store. (top of page)

Second year coach Michael Landers is looking for a special year for his East Texas Baptist University Lady Tigers in their first season of competition at the NCAA Division III level, if he can find enough healthy bodies to fill the squad.
The 1998-99 season will be historic in that it marks the beginning of ETBU's participation at the Division III, non-scholarship level. Because of that, the Lady Tigers, who still carry scholarship athletes, are ineligible to compete for the American Southwest Conference title for that reason.
As performances go, the Lady Tigers started fast, running to a 4-1 record in their first five games, but the loss was a big one. It came at the hands of MidAmerica Nazarene, 93-85, in OT, in the first game of the NCCAA Regional tournament at Bartlesville Wesleyan College. The qualifying tournament held the first week after the season opened because of later schedule conflicts, could put a crimp in ETBU's post-season plans.
The Lady Tigers' capabilities are limitless. The Lady Tigers lost only two seniors off last year's HOT championship squad, both to graduation. Forward Julie Bridges is gone but point guard Marcey Clement is now an assistant on Landers' coaching staff.
Back for their final seasons at ETBU are senior shooting guard Christi Coker, senior post Queen Olumbo, senior wing LaTosha Malone, and senior post Stacie Fitzgerald. Throw in sophomore point guard Kelsey Moss, sophomore post Kara Cox, and sophomore post Kayce Calhoun, all of whom were a part of last year's championship squad, and Landers has quite a host of experienced talent with which to work.
Landers is also looking for help from a couple of incoming players expected to make major contributions this season. Junior transfer Nicole Rodberg of Blinn Junior College will pair with Moss at the point guard spot, while junior transfer Ebony Mondy from Texas A&M, Commerce will see plenty of action in the post rotation.
