Charlie Patillo
Men's
Basketball Coach
In his five seasons as Howard Payne men's basketball coach, Charles Pattillo has won the conference championship three times and made trips to the national tournament in all three of those years. After spending 30 years as a high school coach, Pattillo came to HPU from Brownwood High where he coached some of the best basketball teams in Brownwood history. His 1989-1990 Brownwood team posted a 30-3 record and was rated third in Class 4A. At Howard Payne, Pattillo's teams have a 35-19 record against conference opponents. Pattillo has a lifetime coaching record of 455-288, which equals out to an impressive .612 winning percentage. HPU alumnus, Patillo and his wife J'Net are members of Coggin Avenue Baptist Church where Pattillo sings in the choir.

Under sixth year head coach Charles Pattillo
the Yellow Jackets have enjoyed tremendous success. Three
conference championships in the last four years has made HPU a
well recognized team of hard working players and fast paced
basketball.
In a rebuilding year, the 1997-1998 Jackets suffered a 6-19
season and finished seventh in the conference. Composed of only
three seniors and a starting five of three sophomores and two
juniors the Jackets stayed close in every game, but lacked the
experience to put away opponents. This year, coach Pattillo is
counting on the experience of a tough year to give his players a
hunger to make it back to the top of the conference.
Jason Proctor, last year's leading scorer, is back for his senior
year and should continue to improve as a scorer and defender.
Proctor averaged 10.4 points per game last season and shot an
impressive 44 percent from behind the three-point line. Joel
Stary returns after averaging 10 points per game last season.
High flying Russell Johns will stengthen the interior play after
finishing the year strong last season.
Underclassmen ready to step up and contribute include Neil
Sandlin at point guard, Mike Kelly at forward and Quentin Terry
at shooting guard. Sandlin brings his hard nose play to the point
guard position where he showed signs of promise as a back-up last
year. Kelly is a tall player that plays like a guard and has a
nice shooting touch. Terry has a good mid range jumper and makes
good decisions on defense.
With the help of a good recruiting class, the Jackets might be
contending for the conference championship sooner than the rest
of the conference can imagine. (top of page)

Mike Jones
Women's
Basketball Coach
Mike Jones will take the Lady Jackets' basketball team into their second year under his leadership. Last season, Howard Payne finished 10-15 and garnered key wins over conference opponents with the help of only one senior. Jones came to HPU from Pampa High School in West Texas. Jones, 46, helped build a struggling program from the ground up at Pampa, where his program improved to become highly competititve in one of the hotbeds of Texas high school girl's basketball. The father of three is a choir member at the First Baptist Church Brownwood.
A graduate of Stephen F. Austin, Jones is continuing a dream of coaching in college.
Jones' teams use an open style of play that encourages a fast paced game and makes for exciting women's basketball. Prior to becoming head girls' coach at Pampa, Jones was assistant boys' basketball coach at Pampa under Robert Hale from 1987 until 1993. Jones also coached at Burleson High School, Mt, Vernon High School and in the Aleif and North Forest school districts in Houston. Jones and his wife Jayne have three children, Jennifer, Jason and Jonathan.
MIKE JONES' CAREER RECORD | ||
Year | Record | ASC |
1997-1998 | 10-15 | 6-8 |
Over the past two years, the American Southwest Conference has become one of the strongest women's basketball conferences in the South. Last season, Austin College advanced to the third round of the playoffs and at least two other conference teams had legitimate chances to make it to the post-season.
But Austin College can not soon forget the game they played at the Brownwood Coliseum earlier in the year. Howard Payne upset the Lady Roos in one of the best games they played all season. With wins like the one over Austin College and later against Hardin-Simmon, HPU showed how dangerous they can be, especially on their home court.
Finishing with an overall record of 10-15 and 6-5 in conference, the Lady Jackets had their ups and downs throughout the year. Losing only one senior off of last season's team, HPU should have plenty experience from a core group of players that have been together for two years now.
Misty Miller, Jaclyn Waldrop, Brigitte Teal, Kristin Bradford and Kati Etheridge will all be in either their junior or senior year and have developed the teamwork that is essential for success.
Miller is a three-year varsity member who averaged 9.5 points per game last season as well as leading the team in rebounding with a 4.8 per game average. Waldrop had a resurgence during conference as she averaged over 10 points a game in conference and scored in double figures in the key wins over Austin College and Hardin-Simmons. Waldrop will miss the first part of the season with a torn ligament in her knee. She is expected to be ready by the start of the new year.
At times last season, Teal was unstoppable under the basket. The Blanket native shot 43.6 percent from the field in 1997-98 and was named honorable mention All-Conference.
Both Kristin Bradford and Kati Etheridge averaged 4.8 points a game in 1997-98 and are key role players for the Lady Jackets. Etheridge started every game after the Christmas break and contributes with her hard play and consistent hustle.
Also contributing to this year's squad will be senior P.J. Jackson at the post and Kanitha Sorrells. Sorrells is returning to HPU after spending a year away from basketball.
The conference will continue to be strong in the 1998-1999 season but coach Jones and the Lady Jackets plan to be a big reason why the conference is so tough. Expect the help of some recruits and the maturity of the team to be major factors in the success of this years Lady Jackets. (top of page)
