Ron Holmes
Men's
Basketball Coach
Ron Holmes became the second winningest caoch in McMurry Basketball last year, when he opend the season with an impressive road win over Hendrix College. But the season did not stop their, as McMurry cruised to an 8-1 start and a top 10 ranking in the NCAA Division III South Region.
By season's end, the Indians finished with a 19-6 record and a seventh place showing in the South Region. Not bad for a team in its first year of NCAA Division III. Holme's Indians finished with an impressive 12-2 mark in conference and were the only team to knock off nationally-ranked Mississippi College. Tyerone Washington led the way last season with all-America honors. This season should be no different for the Indians, as Holmes has retooled his team to fit his pressing, uptempo mold. He has eight returners and a plethora of solid transfers and freshmen that could make 1998-99 the best year yet. Stability has been a key component to the men's basketball program at McMurry University.
Holmes is just one of two coaches to head the program since 1959. When Holmes returned to McMurry to take over for legendary head coach Hershel Kimbrell, the former McMurry basketball player and assistant coach knew he had big shoes to fill.
Holmes has filled those shoes well, leading his McMurry Indian teams to an 118-95 (55.4 percent) overall record, three American Southwest Conference championships, a trip to the NAIA National Tournament Sweet Sixteen and six playoff appearances in his first seven years as head coach.
Holmes' 1993-94 team went 21-8, claimed a ASC championship and advanced to the Sweet Sixteen round in the NAIA Division II National Championship. His 1995-96 team posted an 18-6 record and claimed a ASC co-championship. His 1996-97 team posted a 14-12 mark and finished the year as tri-champions of the ASC. He has produced a three of all-Americans in Eric Burness, Danny Wisniewski, and Tyerone Washington. Holmes, who played for McMurry College from 1973 to 1977 under Kimbrell, had already proven himself as a highly successful high school coach, compiling a record of 169-67 in eight years as a head basketball coach at Clarendon and Brownfield.
Holmes was a graduate assistant basketball coach for the 1979-80 Indian team that captured the ASC championship, and served as tennis coach and as an assistant basketball coach for the 1982-83 ASC championship team. Holmes attended Van Horn High School, where he was coached by McMurry alumnus John Curry, and graduated in 1973. Van Horn won the state basketball championship in 1971. Holmes received the bachelor's degree from McMurry College in 1977 and earned a master's of education degree from Abilene Christian University in 1984. He coached at the high school level in Lamesa and then Clarendon, where he compiled a 33-19 record, a district championship and a No. 17 final state ranking in 1980. After a year in private business, Holmes in 1984 became the head basketball coach at Brownfield High School, where he posted an impressive 136-48 record, winning 74 percent of his games.
Holmes and his wife Leta, are the proud parents of two daughters, Linsey (10) and Rachael (7).
After a disappointing conclusion to an impressive 1997-98 season, the McMurry Indians appear primed to make a run at the American Southwest Conference title this season. McMurry, playing in its first year of NCAA Division III basketball, was left out of the postseason tournament bracket despite a 19-6 overall record and an eight game conference winning streak.
With a strong group of returners, including four starters and an influx of good recruits, McMurry could be bound for the post-season in 1999. Holmes is expecting good things in 1998-98, as he enters his ninth season in charge of the program. The Indians are projected to finish first in the American Southwest Conference West Division, according to the preseason poll. McMurry's returning talent has no doubt elevated McMurry to such a respected position in the ASC.
All-American candidates Brian Tudman and Daniel Martinez lead the way this season, as McMurry returns eight lettermen and four of five starters. Tudman (6-8, 220), a first-team all-ASC selection last year, averaged 17.1 points and 10.4 rebounds per game. He was the only player in the conference to average a double-double in any two categories. Tudman was also named to the all-South Region second team as well as the Columbia Multimedia all-American team. Tudman has been named the ASC West Division's Preseason Player of the Year for 1998-99 and an honorable mention preseason all-America selection by the DIII News.
Martinez (5-11, 175), a junior point guard, is a two-time ASC Defensive Player of the Year. Last year he became only the sixth player in the history of NCAA Division III to record 100 steals in a season. Martinez is one of the main keys to making McMurry's pressing defense work in 1998-99. Senior wing Matadi Kikunga returns after averaging 9.4 points and 4.3 rebounds a year ago. Kikunga (6-4, 205) showed great versatility on the floor in 1998, and he can score from both inside and outside the 3-point arc. Junior wing Abran Aragon, the 1997 ASC Freshman of the Year, is also back this season. The 6-6, 205-pound wing averaged 9.8 points and 5.4 rebounds during his sophomore year. Three-year letterman Sam Thomas also should figure into the Indians' game plan in 1998. The 6-0, 182-pound guard provides great floor vision, ball handling skills and scoring ability. McMurry's top newcomers for this season include guard Karron Taylor, wings George Wyatt and Rusty Reedy and post Dustin Martin. Reedy (6-3, 190) and Martin (6-9, 190) are junior transfers from Ranger College and Oklahoma Christian, respectively. Taylor (5-10, 170) is a senior transfer from Midwestern State University. Wyatt (5-11, 170), out of Hurst L.D. Bell, is considered one of the Indians' top freshman recruits.
Key losses for coach Holmes' squad include Tyerone Washington, a third-team all-American selection a year ago, and Jo Jo Villarreal, the ASC's top sixth man. Washington was the ASC's leading scorer at 21.0 points per game last season. Villarreal led the Indians in three-point shooting during both of his years at McMurry.
Expectations surrounding the Indian program are high this year, as experience and success are both abundant throughout the roster. The combination of such factors could lead to great things in 1998-99. (top of page)

Sam Nichols
Women's
Basketball Coach
Sam Nichols is in his fourth year as the
McMurry University Lady Indian head coach. Under his direction,
McMurry has
regained its status as a legitimate contender in American
Southwest Conference women's basketball. After going 9-15 in his
inaugural season at McMurry, Nichols' Lady Indians improved to
11-14 in 1997. Last season, the Lady Indians completed their
first winning season in four years, finishing alone in fourth
place in the ASC. McMurry's impressive season was culminated with
a 13-point win over nationally-ranked Mississippi College.
Nichols assumed the helm of the women's basketball program on
June 1, 1995, after a successful 21-year coaching career in a
variety of Texas high schools.
Upon his departure from the high school ranks, Nichols was the 11th winningest active high school coach with a career record of 438-186. He averaged 20 wins a season and won over 70 percent of his games during his 21 years. Nichols high school teams' made 13 state playoff appearances, including the 1980 state championship, and had 14 seasons with 20 or more wins.
Nichols served for eight years on the board of directors of the Texas Girls' Coaches Association, and has served on all-state and all-star selection committees for both the TGCA and the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. Collecting several "Coach of the Year" awards, Nichols gained valuable international experience as head coach of the 1989 Athletes in Action African Tour and the 1994 Athletes in Action Russian Tour. Nichols' textbook, Developing Basketball Players, is being used as a resource in several colleges and universities around the nation.
A veteran clinician, Nichols stays busy throughout the year travelling the country and speaking at basketball clinics and camps. In addition to his basketball clinics, Nichols also conducts motivational seminars for business organizations. His popular "Sam Nichols Position Camps" are sold out each summer and a waiting list is common. Nichols was honored in 1982 by the Texas State Parent Teacher Association for his outstanding service to youth when the group presented him with the "Lifetime Membership" award.
Nichols is a 1972 graduate of McMurry and was named the University's Alumni Coach of the Year in 1993. Nichols, his wife Judy, and their children enjoy outdoor recreation in their spare time.
McMurry University will be looking to culminate its progressive rise in the American Southwest Conference standings with a chase for the 1998-99 championship. The Lady Indians have improved all three seasons under head coach Sam Nichols, and this year's team appears ready to challenge for the title.
The Lady Indians will look to eight returning lettermen, including four starters, to carry the load throughout the year. McMurry finished 14-11 overall and upset then nationally-ranked Mississippi College in the season finale.
Senior wing Machiec Crawford returns along with a junior contingent of Ogonna Merritt, Dedra Brittain and Dedra Williams from last season's starting lineup. Each of the four Lady Indians earned honorable mention all-American Southwest Conference honors a year ago.
Crawford has utilized her scoring ability to claim several McMurry records throughout the course of her career. Last season, she set new Lady Indian marks for three-pointers made in a season and career. Crawford was the Lady Indians top scorer in 1997-98 at 10.8 points per game.
Merritt converted to point guard last season and responded by recording 91 assists and 83 steals, making her the ASC's steals leader the past two seasons. Merritt's strong floor leadership is crucial to making the Lady Indian offense work.
Brittain, a versatile wing, finished with the second highest rebounding average on the team (4.4) last season, along with the highest three-point percentage (.366). Williams, a 5-11 post, averaged 10.0 points and 8.8 rebounds last year.
Also returning from a year ago are sophomores Lilly Ogunbanjo, Talitha Belcher, Mandy Bradshaw and Nisha Washington. In limited playing time last season, Belcher recorded 40 steals, which was third-best on the team.
Top newcomers to the Lady Indian program this year include Nicole Harlmon of Class 3A state champion Comanche, Tamika Thurman of Midland Lee and Whitney Kimbley of Lubbock. Kimbley is the lone transfer into the program, coming to McMurry from Western Texas College. Other newcomers include Stacy Humphries (Burnet), Mykia Anderson (Brookesmith), Mendi Floyd (Sands), Meredith Hawthorne (Liberty Hill) and Bree Bolding (Robert Lee).
