Mike Jones
Men's
Basketball Coach
Mike Jones begins his
eleventh season as head coach of the Choctaws. Jones has led the
Chocs through ten consecutive winning seasons and Choctaw fans
can expect to see more of the same in the 1998-99 season. After
14 years of head coaching experience, his junior college and
four-year-college combined record is now 309-96, which calculates
into a .763 winning percentage.
Jones wasted no time establishing Mississippi College as a top-flight competitor in the Division II Gulf South Conference. In 1995, Jones led the Chocs to a GSC title and the second round of the NCAA Division II tournament. He has earned respect in the American Southwest Conference as the Choctaws won the ASC Championship in their first-year of competition compiling their best record at 24-3 under Jones and their best record in more than 70 years of Choctaw basketball. In his ten seasons as head coach, he has compiled a 197-75 (.724) record, three shy of winning 200 games at MC. Jones has amassed a record of 109-15 (.880), including a mark of 15-0, last year. No doubt, impressive winning tradition awaits opponents as they enter A.E. Woods Coliseum.
Mike led the tribe to the NCAA Division III basketball tournament last year and advanced to the second round. His personal accomplishments from last season were being named ASC Coach of the Year and reaching the milestone of winning his 300th game as a head coach. He had three players to make the ASC All-Conference Team and one to be named ASC Player of the Year. Jones places a lot of emphasis on defense and it showed, as the Choctaws led the conference in Scoring Defense and they placed in the top 15 nationally.
Success seems to follow Mike each year, as he has been a proven coach on the Division II and Division III levels.
The Mississippi College Choctaws were ranked in the Top 30 by the NCAA as having one of the best winning percentages in the 1990's. A tribute that Jones gives to the student-athlete's that have been recruited during that time.
Mike made the move to Mississippi College from Copiah-Lincoln Junior College in 1984-85, after four distinguished years of state dominance and national prestige. During his tenure at Co-Lin, his teams were ranked in the National Junior College Athletic Association's Top-Twenty poll. During his four-year stay, he took teams to the National Junior College Tournament with the 1988 team finishing seventh. His teams were State Junior College Champions in 1988 and were two-time Region XXIII Champions.
For his accomplishments, Jones was named Region XXIII Junior College Coach of the Year in 1986 and 1988. On October 19, 1996, the Copiah-Lincoln Junior College community gave Jones the ultimate honor; they inducted him in their 1996 Sports Hall of Fame class.
Considering Jones' background as an assistant coach, his success at Co-Lin takes few by surprise. Before taking on the junior college ranks, Jones spent eight years as an assistant at the University of Southern Mississippi.
After receiving a bachelor of science degree in education at Mississippi College in 1975, Jones served as a graduate assistant at the university and was responsible for all scouting and recruiting. He later received a master of education in school administration, in 1977.
Mike is the son of Juanita Bridges of New Hebron, MS, and is married to the former Jane Cooper of New Hebron. They have two children, Michael Douglas, Jr., and Mandy. (top of page)
Head Coach Mike Jones and the Choctaw coaching staff are very excited to return to the hardwood floort, for what promises to be a very young and exciting basketball team. Mississippi College is looking to imporve on a very impressive start in the AMerican southwest conference and NCAA Division III. The Choctaws finished last season with a mark of 24-3, their best ever under Jones.
The Choctaws are the defedning ASC champions and are the preseason pick for first place in the 1998-99 season. "Our team will be a very inexperienced team and we must get contributions from some of our new guys very early, if we are goijng to be the team that we want to be," Jones said. Returning from last year's second round NCAA III basketball tournament team are starters Darrell Diamond and Brad Schut.
Diamond emerged as one of the top shooting guards in the ASC last year. The 6-1 senior was the second leading scorer, averaging 12 points and four rebounds per game. Schut, a 6-2 senior forward, averaged 10 points and four rebounds per game. The younger players will look to Diamond and Schut for leadership as they will provide the nucleus for this Choctaw team.
Mississippi College welcomes the return of David Horner, a 6-6 senior forward that injured his knee and had to sit out most of the year. Horner's return will give the Choctaws a big lift in the perimeter shooting area and rebounding. Before his injury, Horner was shooting better than 50 percent from the field and averaging four rebounds per contest. Blair Smyly is another returner that provided great hustle and defense to the team. Curt Crain, a 6-0 sophomore guard, got a lot of playing time last season at the point position. He played in 24 games and averaged 19 minutes. Crain will provide experience as he knows the Choctaws' system well.
One big question mark is the post position. "We will rotate several guys in this position," Jones said. Bo Lewis, a 6-10 junior got some playing time last year. Jeremy Bowen, a 6-7 junior, will contribute heavily in the rebounding area. He is a physical player but will miss the first of the season due to a shoulder injury. Newcomers Jo Dan Robert, a 6-7 junior, and Derrick Davis, a 6-6 junior, are expected to contribute early -- both are transfers from Mississippi Delta Community College.
Other notable newcomers expected to provide valuable minutes for Mississippi College are Rusty Chapman, a 5-6 senior guard from Southwest Community College; Eric Sager, a 6-8 junior from Germany; and Omar Carter, a 6-2 junior transfer from Mississippi Valley State University.
Offensively, the Choctaws will run sets that cater to the style of players that they have. "I think that we have a lot more athletic ability with this team and we will do a lot to use our speed and quickness," Jones said. Defensively, Mississippi College will have the same philosophy as in the past. "Play hard and very agressive. Our size is smaller than we have had, so we will play a more multiple defense than before. I think that strong defense and creating a chemistry among the new and old players will be an important key for us to be successful this season," Jones said. (top of page)

Paul Allen Duke
Women's
Basketball Coach
Paul Allen Duke begins his fourth season as head coach
of the Mississippi College Lady Choctaws. In three seasons, Duke
has an overall record of 50-24 for a winning percentage of .676.
The 1997-98 season has been the best for the Lady Choctaws under
the direction of Duke. They finished with a 21-4 record and a
share of the American Southwest Championship. The Lady Choctaws
began last season with a winning streak of 12 games and continued
the streak through an impressive 27 games, making it the longest
winning streak in the Lady Choctaw basketball history.
Duke was named American Southwest Conference Coach of the Year in 1997-98, and had players to be named Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. Three of his players were named to the ASC All-Conference Team. Duke's team finished near the top of all ASC statistic categories and in the top 15 of most NCAA Division III categories. Before entering the NCAA Division III ranks, Duke had much success in the Gulf South Conference and at the NCAA Divison II level. Duke had two players to make the All-Gulf South Conference Team and one to make the All-South Regional Second Team.
Prior to becoming head coach, Duke served the university as the assistant women's basketball coach for seven seasons. As assistant coach, Duke was part of the Lady Chocs team that finished in the finals of the Gulf South Conference Championship Tournament. He also served as a graduate assistant under Mike Jones for one year. Duke's 20 years of experience as a basketball coach, 11 of which are on the college level, include an impressive list of accomplishments.
Duke began his coaching career in 1977 at Sylva Bay High School, where he served for three years as athletic director, head football coach, and head coach for both the girls' and boys' basketball teams. He established a strong tradition of excellence, leading both basketball teams to their first winning season in the history of the school and to the Class A State Basketball Championship.
Duke moved to St. Andrews Episcopal School in Jackson (1980-85), and immediately led the Saints to a 17-4 record, their first winning season in the history of the school. Duke's last high school position before coming to Mississippi College was at Woodland Hills School in Jackson (1986-87) where he served as head basketball coach. With an eye for excellence, Duke's knowledge of the game was developed by learning from some of the greatest names in basketball.
This commitment to learning led Duke to work at basketball camps under such greats as Dean Smith (University of North Carolina), Bob Boyd (Mississippi State University), and Red Auerbach (owner of the Boston Celtics). He also has worked camps at Villanova University, where Rollie Massimino led the Wildcats to the NCAA National Championship, and Mississippi College, another championship-winning team under Coach Mike Jones. Duke attended Mississippi State University, where he played for one year, and completed his bachelor of science degree in 1976. He received a master of education degree at Mississippi College in 1987. (top of page)
