Johnny Johnson
Men's
Basketball Coach
Johnny Johnson begins his ninth season at the helm of the University of the Ozarks men's program with an overall record of 128-97. A graduate of the University of Arkansas (1984), Johnson took over the Eagles in 1990 and has guided the program to five winning seasons, including last year's 17-7 record. From 1992-95, his teams averaged 22 victories a season as Ozarks garnered the label of the top small college program in Arkansas during that span. Johnson was voted the 1993 Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference Coach of the Year and was twice named the NAIA District 17 Coach of the Year. The former assistant at University of Arkansas-Little Rock earned a master's degree from Arkansas Tech University in 1992. Johnson, who also teaches in U of O's math department, has been active in the Arkansas Special Olympics, having served for several years as the organization's state basketball director. (top of page)
Wth just two of the top eight players from last years team returning, head coach Johnny Johnsons ninth season as head coach of the Eagles is one full of question marks. Johnson will try to mold another winning season from a squad made up largely of newcomers. Despite the fact that there were only two seniors on a team that went 17-7 last year and finished third in the American Southwest Conference, Johnson faces another rebuilding season.
Johnsons cupboard isnt completely bare, though. The two returnees are 6-1 junior guard Patrick Prater of Sherwood, last seasons leading scorer (14.2 points per game) and a two-time All-American Southwest Conference honorable mention selection, and junior guard Daniel Shepherd of Dardanelle, who led the Eagles with 37 three-pointers and averaged 10.5 points a game last year.
Also back is 6-3 sophomore guard Ryan Marshall of Beebe, who averaged 12 points a game as a freshman starter two years ago before missing all of last season with a knee injury. Among those who will try to fill the shoes of departed All-ASC point guard Andre Webster are Donald Williams, a 6-1 sophomore transfer from Shorter Junior College, and Bo Hammond, a 6-foot freshman from Jacksonville.
But while the Eagles lost Webster because of a transfer, they also gained a potential All-ASC player because of a transfer. Ben Jones, a 6-7 senior post player from Clarksville and a three-year letterman at Arkansas Tech, will play his final year at Ozarks, giving the Eagles an experienced inside player. Jones averaged 9.3 points and 4.1 rebounds in 25 games last season at Tech.
The Eagles other inside position will probably be handled by a pair of freshmen: 6-7 Jeremy Box of Pottsville and 6-5 Brian Henderson of Berryville. Sophomore Dennis Wright, Junior Russell Gorman and freshmen Anthony Peterson and Shane Norrid will provide the Eagles depth at the inside positions. (top of page)

Jack Jones
Women's
Basketball Coach
Jones, who is beginning his 20th season at the helm of the Lady Eagles program, enters the season with a career record of 293-209 at his alma mater. A 1979 graduate of Ozarks, Jones' Lady Eagles teams have compiled 13 winning seasons, including three 20-plus win campaigns. He was named the American Southwest Conference Coach of the Year in 1997 after leading Ozarks to a share of the ASC title in the league's inaugural season. A native of LaHarpe, Ill., Jones has laos coached three All-Americans and 17 all-conference players at Ozarks.
Jones has also been Ozarks' athletic director since 1986 and led the school's recent efforts to gain full membership into the NCAA Division III, which it did during the summer of 1998. (top of page)
The University of the Ozarks freshmen class will have to grow up quickly if the Lady Eagles are to rebound from last year's 12-13 season and return to the form of the 1996-97 ASC co-championship squad.
The Lady Eagles return just two starters from last year --- senior guard Amanda Dean, who averaged 3.5 points, and sophomore forward Carla Rhodes, who averaged 7.1 points and 3.8 rebounds. Junior guard Tracy Duncan and senior center Aimee Rogers are the only two other experienced playersreturning for coach Jack Jones.
Among the freshmen expected to make an immediate impact are 6-foot center Christie Shuffield and guards Tara Muck and Maliesa Nelson.
The Lady Eagles received some good news during the preseason when Erin (Langham) Tyler, an All-ASC performer from the 1996-97 team, decided to return after sitting out all of last year. Tyler averaged 13.4 points and connected on 56 three-pointers for the Lady Eagles two years ago. (top of page)
