David Norris
Men's
Basketball Coach
David Norris, a 1982 graduate of and four-year letterwinner at Schreiner College, begins his first year as the new men's basketball coach at Schreiner College. Most recently, Norris was the assistant men's and women's basketball coach at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas.
Norris is a 1980 graduate of Tivy High School in Kerrville, Texas, where he was All-District in basketball. After graduating from Schreiner with his associate of arts degree, he earned his bachelor of science degree in education from Southwest Texas State University in 1986. He served as a student assistant on the Schreiner men's basketball team from 1985-86 under coach Jim Munnerlyn.
Norris took over as head coach of the Brenham High School (Brenham, Texas) boys basketball team in 1994, and led the team to the District 18-4A co-championship, the school's first district title in 32 years. (top of page)
By the end of the 1998-99 season, Schreiner men's basketball coach David Norris hopes the headlines in the local newspapers read, "Hometown Boy Does Good."
A Kerrville, Texas, and Tivy High and Schreiner graduate, Norris returns to his alma mater and hometown to lead the Mountaineers into NCAA Division III and the American Southwest Conference (ASC) after years in the Division II Heart of Texas Conference.
Norris said he's prepared for whatever comes this season, but expects good things from this year's team.
Despite the move to non-scholarship, Division III status, three seniors from last year's team (11-18 overall, 5-99 Heart of Texas) are back to ignite a deep team. Reggie Huggins (6-6 forward), Phillip Masterson (6-1 guard) and Jason Williams (6-2 guard) are back for their final year and compliment a young team ready to challenge its opponents.
Norris will also look to returning letterwinners Clarence Stewart, Jonathan Wraith and Marvin Hoffeins to help guide the younger players.
Stewart, an All-State selection as a senior at Houston's M.B. Smiley High School, will pilot the Mountaineers on the court at the point guard position, and shooting guards Williams and Masterson will make up the perimeter. Willliams played for Tubby Smith at the University of Tulsa for two years before transferring to Schreiner and led Schreiner and the HOT in assists last season -- ranking third nationally among NCAA Division II schools. Richard Herbst
Women's
Basketball Coach
Richard Herbst, a Boerne native and former Schreiner men's basketball coach in the late 1980s, begins his first year as the college's women's basketball coach.
Herbst comes to Schreiner College after eight successful years (1990-97) guiding the men's basketball program at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in Belton, Texas. During his time at Mary Hardin-Baylor, a Division II institution, Herbst compiled an impressive 136-93 record and was twice named the Heart of Texas (HOT) Conference Coach of the Year (1992-93, 1994-95) and made two trips to the NAIA National Tournament (1995, 1998).
Prior to Mary Hardin-Baylor, Herbst served as men's basketball coach and interim athletic director (January to May 1990) at Schreiner College. He finished his three-year stint (1987-90) with a 50-42 record, including an 18-11 mark his first season.
Herbst is also the Director of Athletics for Schreiner College. (top of page)
First-year women's basketball coach Richard Herbst is no stranger to Schreiner College - or Mountaineer basketball.
Herbst, who takes over the women's basketball program this season, served as Schreiner's men's basketball coach for three years (1987-90) before leaving to take charge of the men's program at the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor.
Now he's back in Kerrville, and he's ready to lead Schreiner into this season -- and into the next millennium.
The Mountaineers return 10 letterwinners (11 player in all) from last year's team that finished 8-19 overall and 3-10 in the NCAA Division II Heart of Texas Conference.
Schreiner has moved into the non-scholarship NCAA Division III American Southwest Conference (ASC) for the 1998-99 season, and according to Herbst, should provide a consistent challenge to ASC opponents each week.
Schreiner lost three starters from last year's team -- most notably leading scorer Sharon Slubar, who averaged more than 11 points per game. But with senior Angie Clifton (8.5 points and four rebounds per game), point guard Kezia Lee (6.0 rebounds per game) and forward Emily Okeke Gillespie (5.5 ppg, 4.4 rpg.) returning, Herbst believes the Schreiner women have the essential elements for a strong, competitive team on the rise.
Clifton is solid offensively at the post with good scoring skills and the potential to be a leader as a rebounder. Lee is Schreiner's best ballhandler on the perimeter and is a solid scorer with good speed and instincts. Okeke Gillespie is a strong athlete that has benefited from dedication in the weight room and runs the floor well with good defensive and rebounding skills.
Others Herbst said will play key roles this season are Nikki McNeil, a strong shooting guard with good range on the jump shot; Jessica Ellis, also a guard with good intensity and defensive tenacity; and Leigh Anne Owens, a good inside scorer at the forward position. (top of page)
