1997 Football Season in Review

Mississippi College Captures Conference Championship
Choctaws earn 45-22 road victory over Indians to claim first conference title

Conference Title Decided Decisively - Mississippi College, in its first year of eligibility to win the American Southwest Conference football championship, traveled nearly half a day to Abilene, Texas, knowing that it was one win away from the school's first ASC football championship. Although a loss would mean nothing less than a share of the title, the Choctaws' 45-22 victory over the Indians gave them the title outright.

Champions Have Top-Rated Offense - Mississippi College finishes the regular season with the top-rated offense in the conference. Through 10 games, the Choctaws averaged 434.6 yards per game (273.6 rushing, 161.3 passing) to lead the league. This productive offense helped Mississippi College to the top-rated scoring team in the league -- averaging 30.2 points per game.

Yellow Jackets Had Stinging Defense - Howard Payne was helped to its second-place conference finish by its top-rated defense. In 10 games, the Yellow Jackets held opponents to just 273.0 total yards per game (114.3 rushing, 158.7 passing). Their 114.3 yards against rushing was also best in the conference.

Ground Gainer Glisson - Senior running back David Glisson carried the ball 214 times for 1,443 yards and 10 touchdowns for Mississippi College to finish as the ASC's top-rated rusher in 1997. Glisson averaged 144.3 yards per game and 6.7 yards per carry. Glisson held the top spot in the conference most of the season.

Shaver-Rau is ASC's Top Passer-Receiver Combo - McMurry sophomore quarterback Braxton Shaver led the ASC in most yards passing per game and sophomore receiver Fred Rau led the conference in receptions per game to finish the 1997 campaign. Shaver completed 205 of 374 passes for 2,260 yards with 15 interceptions and 21 touchdowns to average 226.0 yards per game. Rau caught 76 games for 775 yards and five touchdowns for an 8.44 receptions per game average. Hardin-Simmons' Todd Bloom edged out Rau in yards per game receiving. Bloom averaged 94.6 yards and Rau averaged 86.1 yards.

Fulcher Like a Vulture - Mississippi College junior middle linebacker Kyle Fulcher recorded 116 total tackles in 10 games to lead all tacklers this season. Fulcher recorded 47 unassisted tackles and 69 assisted tackles to lead the Choctaw defense and the American Southwest Conference. His play helped Fulcher average 11.6 tackles per game. Hardin-Simmons' Robert Brown recorded 10.0 tackles per game, finishing with 109 total tackles (79 solo and 30 assists).

RICHARDSON, Texas -- The 1997 All-American Southwest Conference football team has been announced. Coaches from all six football playing schools voted for the first and second team recipients and for special individual awards.

Mississippi College senior running back David Glisson has been voted Offensive Player of the Year. Glisson led the conference in rushing with 1,443 yards on 214 carries with 10 rushing touchdowns for a 144.3 yards per game average. He also led the the ASC in all purpose yards with 171.6 per game and scoring, with 6.6 per game. Mississippi College senior Jeff Brooks was voted ASC Offensive Lineman of the Year. On the defensive side of the ball, Mississippi College junior linebacker Kyle Fulcher was named Defensive Player of the Year, while Howard Payne senior Rick Smith was voted Defensive Lineman of the Year. Fulcher led the conference in tackles with 116 (47 solo, 69 assisted), averaging 11.6 per game. Coaches selected Sul Ross State linebacker Nathan Mundahl and Howard Payne running back Richard Green as co-Freshmen of the Year. Hardin-Simmons senior slot back Todd Bloom was named Return Specialist of the Year, leading the conference in punt returns with a 12.5 average. Mississippi College coach Terry McMillan is the choice for ASC Coach of the Year, guiding the Choctaws to an 8-2 record this season, 4-1 in the conference.
