David Norman
Head Coach
A 1983 graduate of Austin
College, David Norman was named his alma maters 29th head
football coach in March 1994. Norman joined the staff at Austin
College in 1989, when he was hired as offensive coordinator and
head baseball coach. Prior to returning to Austin College, he had
a successful five-year stint at Denison High School as an
assistant coach where he helped coach four district championship
teams.
As well as coaching champions, Norman has played on a few championship teams. His Big Sandy High School team was a state champion, and Norman played for the Kangaroos in 1981 when Austin College won the NAIA National Championship. He also was a member of two TIAA championship teams at AC.
Along with teaching a variety of academic courses in Austin Colleges Department of Physical Education, Norman is also the Assistant Director of Facilities and Recreation at AC.
During his four year tenure as Austin College head coach, the Kangaroos have posted a 15-25 overall record.
Norman also received a Masters Degree from Austin College in 1984. Norman and his wife, Margie, are the proud parents of two children, Megan and Scott. (top of page)
The 1998 edition of the Austin College football team will have a more mature look than any Kangaroo squad in recent years, as nearly 50 players on the team will be upperclassmen. Head coach David Norman and his staff will welcome back 18 starters (10 on offense and 8 on defense) from a team that posted a 4-6 overall record and a 2-3 American Southwest Conference mark in 1997.
In 1998, AC returns to a balanced five-home and five-road game schedule following two seasons in which the Roos played six road games and only four home contests. The balanced schedule along with another outstanding recruiting class has hopes high in Sherman for the Kangaroos to move up the American Southwest Conference standings.
On offense, senior Joe Newton, who started all 10 games last season, and junior Mike Phillips figure to see time at quarterback. Newton threw for 1420 yards last season with eight touchdowns. Phillips, who played in nine of 10 games, completed 47.0 percent of his passes in 96.
The offensive line should be a team strength, as four starters are back led by two-time All-Conference guard, junior Paul Samartin. Also back at their starting positions on the offensive line are juniors guard Shawn Mahan, center Brian Orwig and tackle Chad Carey. The O-line is also a deep position group on the 98 Kangaroos, as back-ups return at every position, and the team figures to have a healthy junior Grant Sisemore back. Sisemore was limited to only a couple of games played in 1996 due to sickness.
Another deep and talented position group on offense should be the running backs. Sophomore Dustin Barrett, the teams leading rusher last season with 414 yards as a freshman, is back. Senior Joe Bryant returns to his starting H-back spot, and also back are talented sophomores James Grantham (363 yards in 96) and Aaron Kernek (110 yards last season). 1996 American Southwest Conference Freshman of the Year Brian Marshall hopes to bounce back from an injury-plagued 1997 season in which he was limited to only four games and 30 carries. When Marshall did carry the ball, he showed why he the Conference Freshman of the Year in 96, as he averaged nearly four yards per rush. Senior Bryce Lokey (20 receptions for 291 yards and two touchdowns) and speedy sophomore Cory Hailey (averaged 18.7 yards per reception in 97) return to lead the AC receivers.
On defense, a talented group of linebackers return, along with a solid group in the secondary. The defensive line is a bit of a question mark entering the season, as two starters, including First Team All-ASC performer Justin Buchanan, must be replaced. The 98 Kangaroos will have a solid group of six linebackers led by All-Conference performer junior Reed Heim (team-leading 94 tackles). Joining Heim at linebacker will be seniors Joe Parker, Randy Bryant and Zach Hobbs, along with talented junior Mitchell Hill and hard-hitting sophomore Charles Gurley. Some of this talented group may have to move to the line help fill holes at that spot.
In the secondary, senior free safety and First Team All-Conference performer Carlos Soto returns. Last season, Soto was second on the team in tackles with 87. He had two interceptions and recovered a team-leading four fumbles in 97. Carlos is also an outstanding special teams performer, as he averaged 20.2 yards per kickoff return and 5.5 yards per punt return last year. Junior Drew Harris and senior Jason Hulen return to their starting cornerback positions. Harris led the team in interceptions with three in 1997, while Hulen picked off two opponents passes.
On the defensive line, seniors Stuart Bowie and Bert Harlow along with juniors Chason Hale and Justin Ryan figure to battle for playing time. Sophomore punter John Grace, who averaged 35.6 yards per boot in 1997, is back. Grace could also battle for the starting place kicking job.
Following an off week, the Kangaroos will open their 1998 American Southwest Conference schedule on Saturday, October 3, when they host new ASC football playing member, Texas Lutheran University at 7:00 pm in the annual Sherman Kiwanis Charity game play at Sherman High Schools Bearcat Stadium.
