Pete Fredenburg
Head Coach
Pete Fredenburg's decision to come to the University of
Mary Hardin-Baylor was a homecoming of sorts. Fredenburg grew up
in Clifton, Texas, before moving on to play as a defensive back
at Southwest Texas State University.
After graduation from Southwest Texas State in 1970, Fredenburg served as an assistant at New Braunfels Canyon and New Braunfels High before getting his first head coaching position at Giddings High School. After three years at Giddings, he took an assistant position at Baylor University.
From 1980-1993, Fredenburg served as a defensive coach under Grant Teaff and the Baylor Bears. In 1990, he was named Defensive Coach of the Year in the Southwest Conference. He was also considered on of the Southwest Conference's top recruiters. Fredenburg served as the assistant head coach during his final two years at Baylor. Following his stint at Baylor, Fredenburg spent a season at Louisiana State before becoming the defensive coordinator at Louisiana Tech. he spent three season at Tech before accepting the Mary Hardin-Baylor job.
Fredenburg has coached over 20 players that have made it to the professional ranks. His honors include: Bowl games: Cotton, Bluebonnet (twice), Liberty, Copper, and John Hancock (Sun); Southwest Conference Defensive Coach of the Year - 1990; Named one of the top recruiters for the Southwest Conference; Southwest Texas State three-year letterman in football.
he and his wife Karen Fredenburg has three children, Cody age 17, Denver age 21 and Kori age 23. Cody is currently playing football for Belton High School, Denver is playing baseball at Baylor University and Kori is a graduate of Baylor. The anticipation of football has created excitement on the campus of Mary Hardin-Baylor. Head Coach Pete Fredenburg likes to see the excitement and hopes his young team will feed off of it and get involved in the campus life at UMHB.
With the idea of mainstreaming the players into the campus, the coaches have stayed away from the quick fix of loading up on Junior College players. They have instead brought in a solid foundation of players comprised mostly of freshman and some transfer players to lend some experience to the ballclub. Being competitive will be the overriding goal for this first year program. Trinity University, first on the schedule, will give the young Crusaders a definite challenge as they are a perennial power in NCAA Division III football.
Offensively, the Crusaders are looking to be a run oriented team that will use the clock. They would like to establish the run to set up the pass. A couple of key recruits that the coaches feel will make a presence on the offensive side of the ball include Bryan Larned, a 6-2, 295-pound lineman from Plano, Texas; Robert Allen, a Belton, Texas, product at quarterback; Anton Holloway, a running back from Temple, Texas, and Navorus Pullings, a Junior College transfer running back from Williston, Fla.
Defensively, the Crusaders are looking to play an aggressive man-to-man defense. Fredenburg feels that Central Texas is a great recruiting base for guys that can really run and cover in a man-to-man scheme. With a rugged running attack, the defense should become much more aggressive going up against it everyday in practice. The Crusaders' top defensive recruits include Mike Mikeska, a 5-11 safety from Temple, Texas, that is an outstanding hitter; Jack Johnson, a defensive end out of Langham Creek, Texas; Greg Talafuse of Buckholts, Texas and Stacey Bishop from Belton, Texas.
Fredenburg was also able to put together an outstanding coaching staff. Ralph Harris and Mike Bugar will be offensive and defensive coordinator's respectively. Both have a wealth of experience at all levels of collegiate football. Harris has been an assistant at Greenville College, University of Texas, Baylor University and Southwest Texas State, while Bugar has assisted at Florida State, Louisiana State, Florida, Clemson, Southern Mississippi and Baylor.
