Head Coach
Dr. Jim
Hector has helped to restore Sul Ross State University’s
football health, with the Lobos enjoying a marked resurgence
during the past three years.
Now entering his fifth season as head coach, Hector’s teams have compiled a 13-26 won-lost record, 13-16 in the last three campaigns. After an 0-10 inaugural season, the Lobos ended a 22-game losing streak early in 1995, ending 3-6, and a season later, posted a 6-4 record, winning the conference championship. Sul Ross finished 4-6 in 1997, 2-3 in American Southwest Conference play.
A native of Austin, Hector attended Tyler
Junior College, the University of Wyoming and completed his
bachelor of science degree at the University of Texas at Austin
in 1978. He earned a master’s degree at Sul Ross in 1980 and
a doctorate in education from East Texas State University,
Commerce. Hector served as a graduate assistant football and
track coach at Sul Ross while he was completing his master’s
degree. He coached baseball and football for a year at Leander
High School and for seven years at Austin Reagan High School,
then returned to Sul Ross as head baseball coach and
assistant football coach.
After two years as Lobo baseball coach, where his teams had a 34-47-1 record, Hector replaced Steve Keenum at the gridiron helm in July 1994. Hector and his wife, Lisa, have two children. (top of page)
While many of the Sul Ross State University football expectations rest on James McDonald's arm, the Lobo quarterback has many seasoned teammates to help shoulder the burden.
McDonald, a senior quarterback and an honorable mention All-Conference selection last year, leads 12 returning starts for coach Jim Hector. The Lobos, 4-6, 2-3 in the ASC a year ago, open the 1998 season Sept. 5, when they host Southwest Assemblies of God in Alpine, Texas.
While Mississippi College and Hardin-Simmons University loom as pre-season favorites for the conference championship, Hector points to Sul Ross' head-to-head performances a year ago. The Lobos avenged an earlier 35-14 loss to Hardin-Simmons with a 27-21 victory in Abilene, Texas, to close the season.
Replacing the offensive line and defensive secondary are major projects for Sul Ross, but Hector has a number of talented holdovers. A pair of 245-pound offensive linemen in Jason Starin and Seth Yandell return, while defensive tackle Raul Garcia, 299, and linebackers Nathan Mundahl, 200, Sid Ortiz, 202 and Rolando Charles, 208, are expected to lead the defense. Both Mundahl and Starin gained second-team All-Conference honors in 1997. Mundahl led the Lobos with 71 tackles -- 12 for a loss.
McDonald, who passed for 1,731 yards and 12 touchdowns in 1997, is flanked by runningbacks Mark Feemster (362 yards, three touchdowns and 5.8 yards per carry) and Roderick Myers (240 yards, two touchdowns and 5.3 yards per carry). Receivers include Tim Matthews (25 receptions, 288 yards and a touchdown) and A.C. Hood (19 receptions, 329 yards and five touchdowns). Sophomore Jesse Wells, a reserve last year, is expected to step in as the regular tight end.
Sophomore Tim Williams, who passed for 249 yards and two scores, provides solid backup for McDonald. Hector is also counting on transfers Roland Solis, a 280-pound defensive tackle, and 290-pound offensive lineman Steve Barrett.
