Adé Harding
Men's Soccer
Coach
After a single season as
assistant coach the University of Dallas, Adé Harding makes his
1998 debut as Head Coach of the Crusader Soccer Team. Harding,
who has been involved with the game of soccer since 1971, brings
both a solid competitive background and international playing
experience to Dallas.
A graduate of Delaware's Newark High School, Harding received Offensive Player of the Year honors in 1981, and earned himself a position on the Delaware All-Star Team. After completing high school, he attended De Anza College in Cupertino, California, and began his semi-professional career soon after. In 1983, he won a position with the San Jose Sharks, and played with the team throughout the next four years. Harding then moved to Austin, Texas, where he was hired as both a player and coach with the Austin Soccadillos.
Harding has held numerous coaching positions at the youth, college and semi-professional levels, and currently is on staff with the Colleyville American Eagles Soccer Club. He is an NTSSA Olympic Development Program staff coach and holds his USSF "C" National license and a "D" State coaching license. (top of page)
The University of Dallas men's soccer program is entering the upcoming season with high expectations. Under the guidance of first year head coach Ade Harding, the 1998 Crusaders should show marked improvement over last year's team, in all aspects of the game. After ending the 1997 season with an eye-opening 6-13 overall record, Harding, UD's assistant at the time, is determined to improve not only the team's skill level, but also its attitude.
Dallas will field a strong combination of returning lettermen andcommitted newcomers. Coach Harding has a solid core of eight returning players, including five key starters, and will rely mainly on a number of upperclassmen to guide the team through a successful season.
Anchoring the Dallas defense will be senior goalkeeper Dennis White, three-time letterman and 1997 All-Conference honorable mention selection. White was third in the ASC in saves per game, finished the season with a 2.66 goals against average, and currently holds four individual school records. Assisting White in the back field will be junior Jerome Schoch, a returning defender and 1996 All-Conference selection.
On the front line, look for senior Jason Pyka to lead Dallas' offensive attack. Pyka, a two-time letter winner for the Crusaders, led the conference in assists during the 1997 season and maintains the school records for assists in a game (3) and assists in a career (11). Junior Kenny Marrs will support Dallas in the midfield, and may be an added threat up top, as well.
Harding expects to have at least 7 top recruits
on the roster this season, including local stand-out Danny Lowe.
One of the top students at McKinney High, Lowe was chosen to the
Texas All-State Soccer Team as a senior. He predicts a great
season for Lowe, who will most likely fill the center midfield
position. Other top newcomers include transfer student
Paul Nolan, who played at Holy Cross, and freshmen John Baker IV
(The Colony, TX), Garrett Fox (Keller, TX) and Jimmy Wheaton
(Southlake, TX).
Overall, Harding is confident that the Crusaders will have a solid season, and looks forward to being respected in the conference. The realignment of the ASC into east and west divisions should benefit Dallas as far as scheduling is concerned, although UD was only chosen to finish third in the west division pre-season poll. Hardin-Simmons will likely remain Dallas' toughest opponent in the west, while Austin College looks to sweep the ASC east division. (top of page)

Stefani Papageorge
Webb
Women's
Soccer Coach
With only one year of collegiate coaching under her
belt, head coach Stefani Papageorge Webb is excited about
returning for her second season with the UD Crusaders. Webb, who
has actually been with the Crusaders for two years, originally
joined the Dallas staff in 1996 as an assistant coach. In
addition to her responsibilities as head women's coach, Webb is
also the Director of Soccer at Dallas, and will be assisting
Coach Ade Harding with the UD men's soccer team.
A native of the Dallas/Fort Worth area, Webb attended Garland's Lakeview Centennial High where she was a standout athlete. In her two-year career at Lakeview, Webb was twice named to the All-City, All-District and All-Area teams, and was named as the area's Newcomer of the Year. She finished her high school career as the second leading scorer in the area and was eventually inducted into the City of Garland Hall of Fame.
Following her high school career, Webb continued to play soccer with the Longhorn Soccer Club in Dallas, and helped her team capture the National Championship Title in 1991. She was a member of the North Texas State Team for seven years, played with the Region III Team for four years, and was selected to compete in the US National Team Pool for three consecutive years.
Webb studied Sports Marketing at the University of Maryland and played three years of varsity soccer before a knee injury cut short her collegiate career. Coach Stefani Webb currently holds her USSF National "C" and State "D" coaching licenses. She has been a member of the Olympic Development Program for four years, and remains on staff with the Longhorn Soccer Club as head coach of the '85 girls team.
Stefani Papageorge and her husband James Webb currently reside in Garland, Texas. (top of page)
Second year head coach Stefani Papageorge Webb predicts a year of excitement and improved competition from the 1998 Lady Crusaders. With an increase in the talent and overall enthusiasm of this year's players, Webb is truly starting to see the the fruits of her labor. In only its fourth season of intercollegiate competition, Coach Webb admits that the women's program at UD is finally beginning to take shape.
Webb is anticipating the return of seven upperclassmen, including ASC All-Conference selection Erin Daughters. Daughters, a graduate-student returning for her final season of competition, was fifth in the league in goals scored (9) during the 1997 season and will most likely be at the center of the Dallas offensive attack. She currently holds six individual school records and according to Webb, has strong leadership qualities and the ability to take control of the game. In addition to Daughters, look for senior Mary Sullivan to spark UD's offense. Sullivan has a strong potential to score goals and will most likely secure a role at the center midfield position.
Senior Cathy Shumate, three-time letter winner, will anchor the Lady Crusaders' defensive line. A 1997 ASC honorable mention selection and 1996 member of the All-Conference Team, Shumate is regarded as one of the top sweepers in the conference. Assisting Shumate in the backfield will be senior Astrid Harris and sophomore Nicole Paparella, both returning letter winners from last season.
For the first time since the inception of the program at Dallas, the women's soccer team has secured some high caliber recruits to fill the roster. Coach Webb has added a total of 16 new players to the squad, including 11 freshmen, who will bring an increased skill level to the field. Defending the goal for Dallas will be freshman goalkeeper Bronwyn Sherman (Beaumont, TX). Other top newcomers include fullback Meg Hamlett (Rockwall, TX) who was selected as her district's Defensive Player of the Year, and midfielders Leslie Smith (San Diego, CA) and Jennifer Anderson (Euless, TX), who will both have a great impact on Dallas' flank play.
Overall, Webb is looking forward to the upcoming ASC competition and the race for the conference championship. She feels that the coaches' pre-season poll, which picked Dallas to finish second in the west division, will hold true. However, Webb predicts that east division Austin College will emerge as the league's team to beat. (top of page)
