Cory Foster
Men's Soccer Coach
Entering his fourth year at
Hardin-Simmons University, Cory Foster has brought stability and
growth to a program that was at rock bottom just five years ago.
Handed the reins early in the 1994 season as a graduate assistant, the Cowboys suffered through a 0-15 season. But in his first official year as head coach in 1995, Foster started out 5-0 to break an 18-game losing streak dating back to the 1993 season. The Cowboys finished 1995 at 11-8 and qualified for the NAIA playoffs.
In 1996, HSU again made the postseason, going 10-10-1. The Cowboys finished second to Austin College for the inaugural American Southwest Conference soccer Championship and lost to LeTourneau University 2-0 in the first-round of the NAIA playoffs.
Last season, Hardin-Simmons won seven of its last nine games to finish 10-10, 6-2 in the ASC -- second to Austin College in the Conference. Foster, a 1995 graduate of Hardin-Simmons, is 31-28-1 in three season as head coach. A four-year started in the Cowboys' midfield, Foster earned All-TIAA honors twice and helped the team make the District VIII playoffs each year. He finished his career with 18 goals and 20 assists (56 points).
Foster came to HSU from the International Christian Academy Boarding School in the Ivory Coast, Africa. He captain of the soccer team and was named Most Inspirational Soccer Player his senior season.
Foster received his undergraduate degree in
all-level physical education and is presently pursuing a Master's
degree.

If experience counts, Hardin-Simmons should be in great shape for the 1998 season. A total of 13 lettermen and nine starters return from last year's team that went 10-10 and just missed its first American Southwest Conference title.
The Cowboys are stacked up front. Senior forward Brian Nelson, a three-year starter, scored 17 goals to lead the team last year, while sophomore and first team All-Conference pick Gerardo Martinez made quite an impact with seven goals. Chris Gomez was fourth on the team in scoring with 12 points on four goals and four assists. Senior four-year player Rusty Antilley will be in on the actions, as well as newcomers Jared Hilton and Pres Holcomb.
In the midfield, senior Brant Bird leads the way. The three-year started broke into the top 10 scoring list last year with five goals and three assists. Junior Andy Gibson, a two-year starter, added three goals and three assists.
On defense, senior sweeper Brad Bankhead returns for a fourth year. The two-time All-Conference pick paces a defense that recorded four shut outs a year ago, averaging 1.75 goals against per game. Junior Jeremy Combs returns for his third season, while sophomores Trevor Harrison and Carlton Glover enjoyed solid rookie season.s
In goal, a pair of talented seniors will guard the net in the form of Clay Corder and Chad Newton. Corder, an All-Conference selection, recorded a 1.64 GAA and allowed just 26 goals in 1,147 minutes. He earned Player of the Week honors early in the season. Newton, who suffered an injury last summer, play well as a back-up. He saw action in seven games last season and earned a 1.98 goals against average. (top of page)

Jason Wharton
Women's Soccer Coach
In 1997, Jason Wharton inherited a soccer team that won
the first American Southwest Conference Soccer Championship the
previous season, and led the team to repeat Conference title and
a school-record 13 wins against six losses.
The 28-year-old Wharton brings a wealth of experience to the HSU program. Born in Los Angeles, he spent most of his life in Sacramento, Calif. for the previous three years, he was in Eugene, Ore., working on his Master's degree in journalism while coaching a junior college men's club team, a girls premier soccer club and a varsity boys high school team.
He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from California State University-Sacramento in 1993 after being granted an Associate of Arts degree in journalism from Cosumnes College (Calif.).
Wharton recently earned his National "B" Coaching License. His playing experience includes one season with the Las Vegas Quicksilver of the USISL Southwest Pro Division, six years with Club Deportivo Mexico-Sacramento and two years at NCAA Division I CSU-Sacramento. (top of page)
As good as things have been for the Hardin-Simmons women's soccer team during the past two seasons, the best may be yet to come.
The two-time American Southwest Conference champs still remain a predominately young team with no seniors on the 1998 team. But 17 letter winners and nine starters return to a team that has won its last 14 conference games, including an 8-0 league record in 1997.
Junior forward Melanie Forster leads the group of returning veterans. The 1996 ASC Freshman of the Year dispelled all notions of a sophomore jinx with 20 goals and three assists last year. Sophomore forward Andrea Gilbreth added 13 goals, while junior Jennifer Alford added seven goals. The trio combined for 10 game-winning goals. Also returning at forward are sophomores Rexanna McCubbin and Sara McVean.
In the midfield, great things came from sophomore Kristina Farmer, who scored six goals and five assists. Junior Alison Ady is a two-time All-Conference selection, and juniors Devon Kearby and Liz Cheatham both return for their third years with program. Watch out for freshman Sara Martin, who piled up more than 100 goals at Carroll High School in Corpus Christi, Texas, during her four-year career -- including a team-high 28 as a senior.
On defense, junior Jill Quick, the lone upperclassmen, leads a young but proven unit. Joining Quick are sophomores Summer Scheel, Judy Holladay, Sarah Standridge, Kara Frazier and Deborah Draeger.
Perhaps the only question mark is in goal, where four-year starter Dawn Liberator was lost to graduation. Wharton thinks he has a suitable heir apparent in Jamie Lynch, a four-year starter and three-time all-district performer at Pasadena's Sam Rayburn High School. (top of page)
