Steve Barrett
Men's Soccer Coach
Soccer has become LeTourneau University's most
consistent winner, claiming five consecutive season of 10
victories or more, four straight winning campaigns -- the most
successful stretch in the history of the school with 31 wins in
the past two years.
The architect is coach Steve Barrett, whose five teams have carved a 63-47-4 record, achieved national acclaim and established itself as one of the top soccer teams in the Southwest. Heading into the NCAA and the American Southwest Conference, the Yellow Jackets are already considered a top contender for league honors, having been picked second in the East Division before it plays an ASC game. Prior to Barrett's arrival, the Jackets had won as many as 10 games only once in the previous 11 years and the best five-year stretch was 1977-81 when the program produced 42 wins.
Despite a 1997 schedule that included four of the top teams in the NAIA, LeTourneau won 15 games, which came on the heels of a 16-win season. In the NCCAA Division National Tournament, Barrett-coached teams have finished third and fourth in the last two years.
Barrett was raised in England and come to the United States on a soccer scholarship to Liberty University where he received his Bachelor's degree. He obtained a Master's in Sports Management from Virginia Tech. He also teaches in the Physical Education department and is known for conducting top-notch youth camps in the summer at the University. He also puts on mid-winter clinics and directs a successful East Texas prep tournament in January. Barrett and wife, Tina, have two sons, Austen (7) and Brandon (4), and a daughter Amanda (2 in December). (top of page)
Coming of a conference championship in the Big State Conference, the LeTourneau University men's soccer team is confident it can be a contender in its first season as a member of the American Southwest Conference.
With the return of nine starters and seven other letterwinners, the Yellow Jackets should give East Division favorite Austin College a good fight for the Division title. LeTourneau is loaded with experience all over the field, but four players should hold the key in 1998. Senior forward Joey Reagan scored 18 goals and three assists to lead the team in points (39) and goals. He has 43 goals in his career. Senior goalkeeper Jesse Vineyard recorded nine shutouts and allowed just 1.57 goals per game last season. He has 20 career shutouts and 390 career saves. Vineyard's success has been helped by senior fullback Anthony Haverly, a two-time NCCAA All-American, and junior fullback Ethan Harter.
Other key returning players are senior midfielder David Reu, junior goalkeeper Raymond Sabatino (who returns from a two-year absence), and junior midfielder Daniel Rich. LeTourneau's top recruit is Kilgore High School standout Dusty Beets, who socred 101 career goals and 38 assists in high school. (top of page)

Pedro Blanco
Women's Soccer Coach
Pedro Blanco certainly has a soccer background, having
coached men and women's teams at Missouri Valley College (Mo.)
and Whitman College (Wash.), as well as the Bolivian National 18
and Under Team. He has played for Columbia in the 1971 Pan
American Games, '70 World Cup Eliminations and '68 Olympics in
Mexico City.
He came to LeTourneau University in Februarty and began recruiting immediately for the school's first women's soccer program. Blanco attended college at Brescia (Kent.) and Western Kentucky, then later started the soccer program at Brescia.
He is a native of Columbia and briefly was an assistant coach for the Millonarios, a professional soccer team in Bogota. Blanco and his wife, Kathy, have a 12-year-old son, Andrews. (top of page)
With every new season, there are always the usual questions. In the case of the LeTourneau University women's soccer team, there are nothing but questions since this is the first year of the program.
Coach Pedro Blanco has been busy recruiting since February and he had responses from several on-campus students last spring who were interested in playing for the fledgling program. Blanco and his players, however, enter the season full of hope.
One thing the Yellow Jackets are not going to let cross their minds is that the preseason poll has them listed last in the East Division of the American Southwest Conference. While the team is not familiar with any of their opponents, it will work the same way. ASC teams are not going to know about LeTourneau.
Some of the on-campus players who will suit up include a former LeTourneau volleyball player, Lauren Hastie, Amanda LeBritton, Lauretta Wright, Shiloh Terrell, Vanessa Bogram, Joy Wilson and Wakey Taylor. The squad will be rounded out by freshmen.
The tip-off game will be played at the University Soccer Complex when ASC foe Mississippi College visits Friday, Sept. 4, at 5 p.m. The Yellow Jackets will be on the road the next day at Austin College in Sherman, Texas. (top of page)
