1997 Volleyball Season

Season Wrap Up

Indians Win! Indians Win! - The McMurry Indians, by virtue of their 3-0 win over Howard Payne Friday night, completed a perfect run toward the American Southwest Conference volleyball championship. McMurry finished the season 12-0 in conference play with an unprecedented 36-0 record in games to win the school's first volleyball championship. Coach Cammie Petree was named coach of the year, and Mandy Findley and Tracee Nielsen were voted co-Most Valuable Players by the coaches. Howard Payne finished second in the ASC with a 10-2 record, followed by Austin College at 7-5.

Versatile Victors - The Indians finished their season leading the conference in three statistical categories -- three very different categories. McMurry lead in kills with 12.95 per games (1,243 in 96 games), assists with 11.43 per game (1,097 in 96 games) and digs with 21.25 per game (2,040 in 96 games). In addition, they were consistently ranked among the national leaders in team digs per game. Strong defense, consistent hitting and good setting helped McMurry complete its perfect season.

Mary Hardin-Baylor Most Accurate - Although it was ineligible to win the American Southwest Conference Volleyball Championship as it continues to phase out its athletic scholarships, Mary Hardin-Baylor showed that it is a positive addition to the conference. The Crusaders were nationally ranked in the NAIA this season and completed the year with a 26-6 record. Against conference teams, although the games did not count in the standings, Mary Hardin-Baylor went 13-1. This would have tied them for the conference title with McMurry. The two schools split their season series -- each winning their home match.

Sophomore Marisa Orsag finished the season as the conference leader in blocks and hitting percentage. The Middle Blocker from Magnolia, Texas, averaged 1.57 blocks per game in 92 games and hit a league leading .404 percent. She recorded 327 kills in 607 attempts with only 82 errors. At the net, she made 53 solo blocks and 91 block assists. (top of page)

Cammie Petree earns conference coach of the year honors

RICHARDSON, Texas -- McMurry University dominated the race for the American Southwest Conference Volleyball championship by winning all 12 of its conference matches -- including a split with provisional member Mary Hardin-Baylor. The Indians clinched the title outright by virtue of its 3-0 win over Howard Payne last Friday night. But what was most impressive about the Indians' first ever conference championship, is that it was perfect. McMurry had an unprecedented 36-0 games record against conference opponents. Along with the team championship, McMurry handed coach Cammie Petree her 50th career victory and coach of the year honors.

Seniors Mandy Findley and Tracee Nielsen were named co-Most Valuable Players on the American Southwest Conference volleyball season as the recipients of the most votes during the all-conference voting procedure taken by coaches. Freshman of the Year honors goes to setter Michelle Alexander of Austin College. Joining the Indians' hitter-setter duo on the first team are Howard Payne's Myka Allen and Robin Pittman, Austin College's Emily Crockett and Hardin-Simmons' Kellie Laird. The Second Team All-Conference squad is made up of Austin College's Ginger Dunlap and Michelle Alexander, Melanie Standridge of Hardin-Simmons, Howard Payne's Baylor Brown, Amy Rojo of Sul Ross State and University of Dallas' Erin Daughters.
