Holly Tarter
Volleyball Coach
The Hardin-Simmons University athletic department
recently announced the hiring of Holly Tarter as the school's new
volleyball coach.
The 28-year-old Tarter replaced Gina Markin, who led HSU for the past four seasons. Markin left Hardin-Simmons in late January to accept an assistant coaches position with the Rice University volleyball program.
Tarter was previously the varsity volleyball coach at Levelland High School in addition to teaching junior high special education and guiding the eight grade basketball and track programs.
A four-year player at Sul Ross State University and an accomplished coach at the high school level, Tartar brings impressive credentials to Hardin-Simmons. In 1996, she led Round Rock High School to a district championship and berth in the regional quarterfinals in her only year there. The previous two years she spent as a varsity volleyball, softball and track head coach, and assistant basketball coach at Bastrop High School. The basketball team claimed the district crown both years and was a regional finalist in 1995-96 with a 30-3 record.
Tarter earned several awards while at Sul Ross. She was a member of the All-TIAA team in 1989 and 1990, and was named the Conference Player of the Week in both seasons. The team captain in 1990, Tarter earned the team's best all-around player award. (top of page)
Holly Tarter inherits a team rich with experience and hungry to reach a higher level. A total of nine letter winners and five starters are back from last season's 11-21 team that finished in a fourth-place tie in the American Southwest Conference with a 5-7 mark.
Leading the way is senior outside hitter Kellie Laird. Laird shined last year, recording 716 assists en route to a first-team All-Conference selection. She also had 112 kills and a .162 hitting percentage.
Senior middle blockers Krystal Brodbeck and Tricia Caddel return. Brodbeck brings a solid game and an unselfish attitude, while Caddel, hopes for a healthy season after appearing in just more than half of the team's games last year. Caddel led HSU in blocks during the 1996 season.
Also in the middle is second-team All-Conference selection Melanie Standridge, who led the Cowgirls with 58 total blocks and finished fourth with 232 kills.
On the outside, juniors Christie Wright and Amy Corbitt are the veterans. Wright, an honorable All-Conference selection, and Corbitt both appeared in all 32 matches last season. Wright was second on the team in kills and digs with 299 and 358 respectively. Corbitt chalked up 275 kills, good for fourth on the squad.
Junior defensive specialist Sarah Loving returns for her third season, and sophomores Melinda Bunte and Emily Lamson hope to make more of an impact in 1998. Also hoping to make waves are a pair of redshirts from last year -- outside hitter Candace Anderson and middle blocker Shevella Lindley. (top of page)
